She looked over as she felt for Rollie at the same time, but he was gone. There was a note attached to the pillow and it was strange, for Rollie was not one to leave a handwritten note. He would use the computer or the PDA but an old fashion note, now that was something and she scanned the note, squinting her fuzzy eyes.
‘Angie,
At the church already…Luce will pick you up…Love you… Rollie’
"Hmmm," she murmured, "short and to the point. What has Tyler F/X cooked up for this occasion?" She slid out of bed, slapping cold water on her face and made her way down to make some coffee. She could smell some wonderful expresso as she came down the stairs. Peeking into the kitchen area, she smiled, seeing that Rollie had made her a cup. He must have just left, she thought as she went over and picked it up, hugging the sides of the mug and sitting down at the table. Yawning, she barely noticed the sign; "in the oven", it read in Rollie’s scratchy handwriting. Barely sipping the expresso, she opened the oven and saw a covered dish. She pulled it out with Rollie’s big lobster potholder and sat it down on the table. Taking a breath, she took off the cover and grinned from ear to ear, exclaiming; "Rollie!"
The plate had four heart-shaped pancakes and one, strange- probably inferior production that looked like a creature from the black lagoon. There were some strips of crisp bacon and a pool of melted butter in the center of the plate.
"Watch it Tyler, gonna get me fat and full of cholesterol before I’m thirty," she said out loud. She did not hesitate to eat however as she poured the syrup over the pancakes and enjoyed herself immensely. There was a knock at the door as she put the last of the creature pancake into her mouth and she got up, feeling her tight stomach and groaning a bit as she made her way to the door.
Opening it slightly, she heard the pop of gum and without even looking, knew that Lucinda Scott stood on the other side.
"Hurry up, slow poke! Get dressed! Dingo gets married in less than two hours!" Lucinda barged in as Angie smiled.
"Make yourself at home. I’ll go up and get dressed in something appropriate for this fiasco."
"What fiasco? You don’t think Dingo’s wedding is going to be nice?" Lucinda asked, curiously as she popped her gum again and looked down at her new Givenchy shoes. They were pinching her feet but beauty was pain.
"Oh…sure," Angie replied quickly, then chuckled to herself as she thought of Dingo’s marriage to Nick/Dorinda. She wanted to see the expression on Luce’s face when it all came out after Pappas was lured out and captured, "Hey, by the way- where am I getting married and where’s your dress for my wedding?"
Lucinda looked like she had swallowed a goose egg as she smiled coyly and sat down, playing with the Ectoplasmic Creature face at Rollie’s workbench.
"You just get dressed for Dingo’s wedding, bring your dress and stuff for your wedding and you’ll see…"
"Oh come on, Luce! How bad is it? Please tell me?" Angie begged, looking at the actress who had suddenly clamed up, which was almost an impossibility for her.
"Nope! I would be killed by Master Rollie! Get dressed!"
Angie sighed and started for the stairs, "okay, I’m going, but tell me one thing…will I like it?"
Luce looked up at her and grinned, "You’re going to love it! Oops, there I go and gave you a hint!"
Angie smiled back at her and ran up the stairs. She showered, did her hair and pulled out a nice, ice blue, silk suit. She figured, she can wear it again after her wedding, when she was leaving to go to Bora Bora. She let out a small "awieee" as she thought of going on a honeymoon and to Bora Bora to boot. She couldn’t believe this was all happening to her.
Luce helped her with her wedding dress and suitcases. She had no idea about Rollie’s bags but did note some of his clothes were missing from the closet. It was the strangest type of arrangements for a wedding that she had ever known.
The intended bride and her maid of honor took a downtown cab to St. John the Divine, arriving a half hour before the Dingo Tyler/Dorinda Bailey nuptials were to take place. Luce disappeared with the bridal dress and suitcases as Angie stood outside of the St. James’s Chapel, pacing. People were strolling in, mainly extras and crew people from the Ectoplasmic Ranger movie. Everyone was properly attired for the wedding that would be taking place shortly.
Angie wished that Pappas would show up now and make his move so that Dingo wouldn’t have to go through the whole thing before knowing the truth, but she knew that was wishing for something like that never happened in a Tyler production. Finally, she spied Michael Sanchez peering from behind a column inside the chapel. To his left was Mira. He was talking with her and she was looking at him strangely. Obviously, Michael was filling her in on Dorinda’s past. Angie could see other strange men, blending into the shadows of the chapel and she imagined that they were with Michael. Mira waved at her finally and came over to her.
"Oh my God! What is Michael doing?" she whispered to Angie who rolled her eyes and grabbed Mira’s hands.
"Yeah, it’s going to be wild around here? Have you seen Rollie?" Angie asked, a little breathless.
"Yep, he’s behind the altar with his father. They are both as nervous as…well, you know- the Tyler men are getting married today," Mira said, snickering.
"Hey! Maybe you should think about the renewal of your vows with Michael?" Angie asked her, shutting her up.
"Not in a million years!" Mira said, her voice adamant, "besides, you got the one I really wanted!" Angie looked at her shocked and Mira winked.
"I guess, I should imagine there will be a lot of heart-broken women all over the world today…" Angie remarked with sarcastic remorse.
"All crying and tearing their silken, designer blouses, for sure," Mira added.
She shared a laugh with Angie who finally spied the top of Rollie’s wavy hair.
"Excuse me Mira, I’m going to go have a word with Rollie!"
"Good luck! I’ll go find the bride to be. I am sure it’s as nervous as can be," she remarked, her tone teasing as Angie nodded her head. Mira knew!
Angie approached the Tyler men behind the altar. Rollie saw her first and smiled, making Angie’s heart skip a beat He looked so handsome in his gray tux. Dingo looked as nervous as she had ever seen him. He kept clearing his throat and shifting his weight, pulling at his tie. His tux was gray as well, a traditional long tailed coat.
"Hello love," Dingo greeted her, kissing her cheek. She thought she smelled the faint odor of Jack Daniels on him and smiled.
"Well, it’s almost time," she remarked as Rollie winked at her. She looked up at the ornate chapel and sighed, "such a beautiful chapel, Dingo. I hope that Pappas doesn’t spoil things for you."
"Well, that’s what we are hoping, Angie. He has got to show up and try for the ring. Michael Sanchez is not the kind of man to hear no or it can’t be done!"
"I’ll second that!" Rollie added, "in fact- I think I see Mr. Sanchez on the move."
Both Angie and Dingo followed the direction of Rollie’s eyes. Michael had swiftly moved to the rear of the chapel as a large group of people made their way inside. Angie grabbed Rollie’s arm as he moved her closer to the back of the altar. She could see a very distinguished looking, old man who walked with a ivory cane followed by a tall, thin olive skinned man with a thick, droopy moustache. They traveled down the aisle to a row of seats on the groom’s side about midway down. Rollie caught Michael’s incoming warning on his transmitter in his ear.
"Pappas!" he whispered to Angie who peeked out again, Rollie’s hand, resting on her back.
"But who is the old guy? He certainly isn’t a hit man?" asked Angie, looking back up at him and Dingo.
"Bloody hell!" Dingo muttered as Rollie saw the look on his father’s face, "It’s Skartsonis himself!"
Angie decided that it was high time she went out and found Luce and Dorinda. She gave Rollie a look of caution as she, very discreetly, came from behind the altar to the rood screen and walked behind it and out the side aisle down to the back of the chapel and out the door.
She found Dorinda and Luce in the preparation room not far from the chapel. Angie’s mouth opened wide when she saw Dorinda. She was dressed in a traditional, high necked, Victorian lace gown with a long train and a long, lace veil. She looked absolutely gorgeous. She looked at Angie and hugged her warmly.
"Oh God! I know this isn’t going to be real, but I am so excited! I wish I could have told Dingo before this, just to see- you know, if he really would have gone through with this."
Angie smiled at her and looked down to make sure she was wearing the paste ring. It glittered like the real thing and she touched Dorinda’s arm gently.
"Pappas is here, Dorinda. And someone else…"
Dorinda looked suddenly very grim. Lucinda was totally clueless as she watched the interaction between the two.
"Who?"
"Your grandfather…he came," Angie said, softly
Dorinda trembled slightly, "Oh God!"
"He looks good for one hundred years old," Angie said, smiling, trying to relax her.
"He’ll kill me and he will recognize me, for sure!" Dorinda said, looking at herself in the mirror.
"What’s going on here?" Lucinda suddenly said, hands on hips as she begged to be included.
"Don’t worry Luce, you know soon enough!"
Lucinda stamped her tight shoes and walked out the door. They could hear the music starting Trumpet Voltaire and Angie raised one eyebrow; "Are you ready?"
Dorinda took a deep breath and with a deadly grimace to her face, and nodded.
Just before the entrance into the chapel, Dorinda stopped and looked at Angie, "Just so you know- "I’m a virgin. Dingo and I never slept with each other."
Angie blushed and couldn’t help but ask, "But, you guys looked so together and had the one hotel room and well, you were dancing at the club and all and Dingo, well he’s known or tells us, he’s quite the ladies’ man."
"Actually, he’s quite the gentleman, really," Dorinda said, sweetly, "And I was actually looking forward to finding out what all the fuss is all about! As a man, I- well, wasn’t really thinking like one and it was impossible, you know to get serious with anyone. Now, this man- well, he would have been so wonderful, I know…"
Angie smiled at her. She felt so sorry for Dorinda and her future. The world was such a strange place for her. "Good luck, Dorinda!" she told her and stepped aside as Dorinda took a deep breath and stepped into the chapel as everyone rose.
Angie stood waiting until Dorinda made it down the aisle to the altar. Dingo stood waiting, beaming as Rollie came up behind Angie from the outside of the chapel. He rested his hands on her shoulders as she reached up and touched his hand with her own.
The minister began the ceremony as Angie whispered to Rollie what Dorinda had just told her. A great sigh of relief came out of Rollie’s mouth as Angie nudged him in the ribs. Angie could see Michael closing in on the row with Pappas and Skartsonis. If something was going to happen, it would be soon.
The ceremony went forward as Angie and Rollie held their breaths. Angie could see Mira occasionally watching for Michael as she sat in a row across from Skartsonis and Pappas. Lucinda sat near the front on the groom’s side, blissfully unaware of what was going down.
As the minister pronounced Dingo and Dorinda as husband and wife, Michael suddenly appeared from behind the rood screen near the front of the altar. Several of his men also appeared out from their hiding. Angie and Rollie at first thought it was all over until they both felt the butt of a revolver in their backs. As Rollie turned, a member of Skartsonis’s guard smiled at him and made a motion with his hand, reminding Rollie of a previous encounter with that fist in a hotel bathroom doorway. The congregation let out a gasp as both Dingo and Dorinda, who were looking only at each other, continued the ceremony. Dingo raised Dorinda’s veil and smiled at her, she at him. At that moment, Pappas stood and walked up to the couple, a gun in his hand.
Dingo quickly moved in front of Dorinda, shielding her. Pappas moved up to him, putting his hand around Dingo’s throat so that his thumb pressed against his windpipe and tightened down on it. Rollie groaned as Angie grabbed his hand, still under the point of the guard’s revolver at the back of the chapel. There was no talking except from Pappas as he shouted to Skartsonis.
"We have it now. What was lost, is now found!" he shouted to him as the old man made his way up the aisle, glaring at Dingo through watery, drooping eyes. He cursed at Dingo in Greek as he came toward Pappas who had grasped Dorinda’s hand and started to pull her out from behind Dingo.
"You bloody son of a bitch!" Dingo yelled at the old man as Pappas’s grip tightened, choking Dingo and making him fall to his knees in agony. Dorinda suddenly pulled up her skirt and pulled out from her garter, a small 38 caliber snub nose and put it against Pappas’ forehead.
"Let him go, Angelo!" she said, her voice low and guttural. The old man’s eyes suddenly went to her, his eyes then dropping to her hand, seeing the Heart of God ring. He looked back at her face then and she smiled at him and reached forward with one hand still on Pappas and pulled the old man’s face forward and said something in Greek to him.
Pappas stood bolt right up, releasing his gun and dropping it to the ground. Skartsonis made a whining sound, almost a cry as Dorinda, in front of the entire congregation removed her veil and without looking at Dingo, removed her red-haired wig. Nick Kapis’s hair was growing but it would never have the fullness that he desired for Dorinda. He had hoped to dye it, have extensions placed but the wig, which had been made for him, had appeared so real and lifelike. He looked at his grandfather then, the old man shaking and losing his balance as his grandson turned granddaughter caught him and sat him on the first pew.
Michael and his men were released as Nick/Dorinda called for their release from his grandfather's men. Rollie and Angie both breathed a sigh of relief as well and came forward into the chapel toward Dingo’s side.
Rollie looked at his father, his face flushed and fallen. He was still staring at Dorinda, and oblivious to those around him.
"Dingo? Hey? You there, mate!" Rollie was asking him, taking both his arms and slightly shaking him.
Dingo look at his son, dumbfounded. He couldn’t get a word out of his mouth. He was watching Dorinda bending over the old man who was having difficulty breathing and getting some oxygen assistance from one of his guards. He was also looking at the red wig on the carpet.
"Dingo!" Rollie was still trying to get to him and his father finally looked at him and seemed to breath in deeply.
"I’m married to a man!"
"No Dingo, it was not a binding ceremony. It’s okay, mate," Rollie was telling him as Angie went to Dorinda’s side who had stood up, looking up at the roof of the chapel, with tears in her eyes.
"It’s done. Everything is done now," she told Angie as she stole at look at Dingo, whose eyes widened, "Dingo, can I explain?"
He looked at her, shaking his head, "I don’t even know what you are? All those things we did and said. I told you my heart’s secrets and to know now, my God! You deceitful bastard!"
"I deserve that," Dorinda replied, "but I just want you to know that I still love you. I realize you don’t feel the same and suddenly, this ring- here," and Dorinda took off the Heart of God ring and tried to hand it to him.
"No! I don’t want that thing! That came from your family to begin with and it has cursed me ever since. Keep the bloody thing. Give it back to that old bastard. He cheated terribly at cards. His problem were that he came across someone who cheated better than he did," Dingo said, his voice harsh and low.
Skartsonis was still cursing as Michael came forward, thanking Dorinda and then, turned to Dingo, "Well, Mr. Tyler, thanks for your time and energy in helping us tie up this family business once and for all. I hope that you can get beyond this in time."
Dingo looked at Michael with anger, "I hope you rot in hell, Lopez. You use people like they was animals. You used my son as well."
Rollie looked down at his feet as Dingo saw for the first time, the combined effort that was in play. "Oh, not you too, Rollie! You knew and let me go through with this thing?"
"It was the only way to get these guys here. It had to be real. I know how you are when you find out something. You couldn’t have kept a straight face for the ceremony. I am sorry…" Rollie began but Dingo waved him off.
Angie started to say something as well but Dingo pushed past them and strode out of the church. He was pulling off his tux jacket and dropped it on the ground. His tie was next as he left the main chapel and headed for the street. Rollie ran after him, leaving Angie with Mira and Lucinda who had joined the group up at the altar in the chapel.
"I told you, Michael can make things happen like this all the time. Everyone pissed off at everyone else, people getting killed and people getting confessions they don’t want to hear. Mark my words, Angie. Don’t expect Rollie not to help him in the future," Mira warned her.
"I doubt seriously, that Rollie wants to talk with Michael much. I think he has just lost his father out that door right now," Angie said softly.
People filed out, their voices animated with the events that had taken place. Michael’s men took Skartsonis, Pappas and his guards out. Dorinda gave a final look to the chapel, putting her wig back on and looked down at Angie who sat alone in the first pew, looking up at the windows behind the altar.
"Sorry, Angie- I know that you wanted to get married here today," she said, putting her hand on Angie’s shoulder.
"Yeah, I wish I knew what was going to happen now…" Angie replied, looking depressed and staring up at St. Teresa of Avila, "you know, I was in Spain- in her town not long ago. It’s where Rollie and I finally realized our true relationship. It’s funny, huh?"
Dorinda smiled, sad as well and left Angie sitting there, contemplating the moment in time. Luce walked back in several times and then finally, came down to her.
"Angie? Come on, let’s go. They need this chapel for another wedding. Let’s go find Rollie."
"Yeah, sure- whatever," Angie said, and stood up. The red sky of morning warning was certainly true.
As they walked back toward the back of the chapel, Angie saw Rollie at the door. He smiled, a little wan in the face as she approached. Lucinda walked on out, leaving them alone.
"Hey, there," he told her, putting his arms around her shoulders as they stepped into the main cathedral.
"Hey, yourself," she answered, "did you find Dingo and try to apologize."
"Yeah, I tried," Rollie said, shaking his head, "but he’s already gone to the airport. Guess he won’t be attending any more weddings today."
"Oh, sorry…"
"Dorinda was very unhappy as well, I think she was heading home as well," Rollie added and his face lit up suddenly as Angie rolled her eyes.
"Oh, now don’t you think, they would be smart enough and not get on the same plane back to Sydney?"
"Yeah, well- things happen a certain way. Who knows, it could be kismet…" Rollie told her as Angie’s mouth dropped open. She couldn’t believe the scenario he had just suggested. A cruel joke on the two of them would surely backfire in a hostile confrontation.
"Well, so what’s up for the rest of the day, Mr. Tyler? We just going home or what?" Angie asked him, as Rollie’s far away look dissipated.
"Silly girl! You have a date with destiny today," he reminded her.
"After this morning, I’m not sure," she replied, wondering if marriage was all it was cracked up to be. Michael and Mira were surely not getting back together again, even with the baby coming.
"Okay, stop right there, Angie. Look at me!" Rollie said, as they stood in the very center of the cathedral, with the grand chamber and ornate archwork surrounding them from every aspect.
She looked up at his face, his handsome, rugged face that she knew every line of, every feature in her mind. He leaned over, kissing her warmly, needing her to know he loved every inch of her soul.
"I’m looking…" she told him, as she pulled away finally, smiling.
"Are you ready to be Mrs. Tyler?" he asked.
"You mean Ramirez-Tyler?" she corrected him.
"Oh Angie, not again?"
"What?"
"I thought we decided that sounded so…"
"So what?"
"Well, not married but like partners…"
"We are partners, business and life."
"Okay, forget it."
"I can’t, you brought it up."
"Stop!"
"Stop what?"
"BOTH of you stop…" said a voice from nearby. Rollie heard the sound of the didgeridoo in his mind as Angie smiled. Mangela stood before them, smiling and pulling at his stiff, dressed up suit.
"Oh, bloody wonderful!" Rollie exclaimed.
"Mangela!" Angie shouted, "You made it!"
"Apparently, I missed the big show, however," the aborigine replied, smiling.
"Yeah, well- all in a day’s work…" Rollie said, putting his hand on his shoulder.
"So, let’s get married," Mangela told the two of them in the middle of St. John the Divine, barefoot with his suit trousers rolled up to his shins.
