Angie for the life of her, couldn’t hold back a giggle at his urgency and it became full laughter as he looked at her with an amazed expression on his face.
"My God, how did we get here?" he asked, as she continued to laugh and he smiled, pulling her over to him. He was kissing her lips, her eyes, her neck and back again to her mouth as she mirrored his every caress.
"Good grief, Tyler!" came the irritated voice of Syd from outside their car. Rollie broke away from Angie, a little startled and she moved away from him slightly. Rollie was breathing heavily, his mouth opened slightly as he stared up at Syd Waterstreet.
"Syd, what a nice surprise…" Rollie said under his breath as Angie swallowed and moistened her lips. She noticed Syd was not drunk at all now but he was still angry.
"I’ve been trying to find you all evening, you cheeky bloke," Syd said, continuing his assault.
"ah- well, we went and got something to eat, is all," Rollie explained as he opened the door to step out. He was stepping around the car to let Angie out, but she got out quickly smoothing down her dress. Syd looked at her from head to toe and whistled.
"Rollie, mate- we don’t have time to kindle the bushbaby here," he told Rollie, referring to Angie, "I needed to go over the schedule and do the first gag in the morning with you. Damn if that Van der Glas snot isn’t coming to the set tomorrow himself!"
"Syd? We don’t have the IXB even started yet- the rest of the stuff is coming by air express tomorrow as well. What gag is left that we won’t need our stuff?"
Rollie looked at Syd Waterstreet exasperated. This man seemed to change his temperament and what he wanted every couple of hours.
Syd slammed a clipboard he had been holding in his hand down on the hood of the car. Angie jumped at the force and sound of it coming down on the metal.
"Change of plans, Tyler..if you would ever check your schedule, you would have known that we are shooting the cave scenes tomorrow. We don’t need anything but the charges that I already have right here on the set."
Rollie looked down at the schedule. It had indeed changed sometime in the past couple of hours. But Syd was like a chameleon. He was hot one moment and cold the next.
"Syd, I thought you were still peeved about shooting the movie now, at least that is what it sounded like this afternoon at your trailer?" Rollie asked him, as Angie recalled his swearing and red-faced sputtered remarks.
"I was just blowing off steam, come on now- let’s go up to your room and go over these scenes. I got a couple of the boys up there with the storyboards just waiting for us. We’ve got to get a jump on this." He motioned to Rollie to join him.
Rollie looked to Angie who had lowered her head and was tracing an outline of stones in the road with her shoe tip. She looked up and saw the plucked nerve in his eyes but then, they were there for a reason and getting paid for it. Sydney was the director.
"I’ll just go up to my room and change, Rollie. I’ll met you in your room in a few minutes," she told him and gave Syd a quick, dirty look as she passed them.
"Ange!" Rollie called out, but she ignored him and went for the stairs closest to their rooms. She could hear the laughter and talking coming from Rollie’s room.
Syd looked at Rollie strangely then and smiled, "just admiring her technique…" he told him.
"Come on, let’s get this over with, Syd. You’re driving me nuts," Rollie interrupted and together they followed Angie up the stairs.
Angie found a note inside her room that had been slipped under the door. It was from her uncle and she swung over to the bed and opened it, sighing deeply. She read that he had gone back to Madrid to meet with some contacts at Interpol headquarters and that he would probably rejoin them by late afternoon tomorrow. He put in the last sentence, the one that made her heart skip a beat- ‘Marta will be here in two more days’.
Angie smiled, grew a little nervous at the thought of finally being rejoined with her mother and then the depression of what her mother had become, set in. She had to concentrate on the moment right now and she shook herself out of it and changed clothes. Just a few moments earlier, this dress would have been off for the night and she would have started her whole life over again with Rollie. She knew the difference between lust and love but the night had been such a volatile combination, much more so than the night she had been seduced by Loubar. Had their moment been spoiled by Syd’s interruption? It seemed like there had been something that came up everytime she and Rollie would start to make love. It was making her crazy.
She entered Rollie’s room and met the boy’s club for the midnight session. The mood was raucous and the room filled with smell of smoke, beer and well, men, she thought to herself. This was not uncommon for her. She was used to being the only female in a room for the gag set-ups.
"Sit by me, Angie," Doolan, the stunt coordinator called out, pointing to the sofa beside him in his usual lecherous tone. She smiled at him as the guys laughed and started to make her way over to sucker punch him but Rollie stood over him.
"Doolan, shut your trap!"he said in a sudden, overprotective mode. Angie gave him a sharp look, a non-spoken warning. She did not want to be treated differently now that they were starting this relationship. She wanted this kind of stuff to stay the same.
"Okay, okay…" waved Doolan, in surrender and frowned, "what’s got into you, Tyler?"
"Nothing, he’s just upset about the equipment," Angie responded and sat down next to Doolan, swatting his beer gut.
She looked up at Rollie, again with the unspoken warning coming from her eyes to his. Rollie rolled his eyes and stepped back.
"Right, I’m just feeling punchy, Doolan- forget it…"
"Okay, let’s continue…" Syd interjected, "so Rollie- the charges will be placed on position 2, position 8 and position 12. Syd was pointed to the boards and the explosion scheme. Angie was making notes with her computer and Rollie was looking strangely at the sequence. The topography of the cave was matched as such that the charges would go off after Dani, as the charismatic nun, St. Teresa would use her supernatural powers to ward off the advancing soldiers. Angie was rolling her eyes at the whole thing. She could feel St. Teresa and all her saintly body parts rolling in their respective resting-places.
"Syd, you realize that you are very close to that underground spring that runs under Avila," Rollie asked him with a worried look.
"Rollie, I had a geo guy look at all these coordinates and he had no problem with the whole set-up. Give it a rest. We don’t need all your gadgets here. Just you lighting up the dynamite will do…"
"Dynamite?" Rollie asked, his eyes widening and Angie reacted the same way.
"Just an expression, relax Rollie. You know I’m joking," Syd said, waving him off. Rollie still looked worried. Doolan poked Angie in the ribs and made a face at Rollie and she smiled for effect.
"Soooo, we will meet at 5 AM sharp, Rollie and Doolan will get the gag set and we will bring in the action at 7 AM.," Syd told them all as they started to wrap up the meeting, "Rollie- you mind telling Dani what time her call is tonight?"
"Uh, well I guess so," Rollie replied, frowning slightly and thinking since when was he the schedule coordinator?
Angie raised her eyebrows at him, then shook her head and closed her laptop. She was feeling more and more as if Rollie and her would never get their night to end as nicely as it began.
And she was right, for she fell asleep waiting for him to come back and by the time he got in around 3:00 A.M., she was angry as he weaved in front of her and passed out across the bed. She could smell Dani’s perfume all over him and saw the disheveled look to his clothes. He wouldn’t! she told herself, trying to rationalize what could have kept him so long but her insecurities came back to haunt her when it came to Dani van de Glas.
Rollie woke with a start as a bucket of cold ice water was poured over his head. "What the bloody hell?" he screamed out, grabbing his throbbing head as he sputtered and tried to focus on his assailant.
"Get up, it’s ten after five and we’re late," Angie said, dressed and as mad as a hornet. Her hair was stuffed in her baseball cap and she was grabbing her gear.
"Angie, what is it, what did I do?" he asked, pulling his soaking shirt off, dripping ice crystals from his hair.
"Drunk, smelling like her and coming in at 3:00 AM just about does it," she told him in a brisk list of complaints. She started for the door but he rushed over and shut it before she could get out.
"Wait a bloody minute! I don’t remember anything after going inside Dani’s room last night," Rollie said, still trying to get his memory collected. Something had happened but it wasn’t coming into focus.
"We don’t have time for this, Rollie. We are LATE! Just get dressed and I’ll meet you in the car and I am driving, get it?" Angie told him, still angry and pushed him out of her way.
By the time they reached the set, Rollie was getting back some partial memory. He had gone in to Dani’s room because she wanted him to look at something that she had in a bag…some sort of gadget she had picked up in town. He had looked in the bag and then, nothing! He felt drugged, not like he had been drinking. He had smelled the liquor on him this morning but he didn’t know how it had gotten there.
Angie was out of the car and talking with Doolan without saying another word to him. He realized that somehow, he had spoiled the whole thing last night and that Angie was thinking he had slept with Dani. But he felt that if she really knew him and loved him, she wouldn’t be acting this way.
Syd was already down inside the cave that they had scouted out for the scenes that were on the shoot that day. Dani hadn’t arrived on the set yet as her call was at 7 AM. He was anxious to speak with her and find out just exactly what had happened. Angie had disappeared inside the cave with some of the other crew and Rollie found himself alone, tracing the charge locations and wondering where the devices were.
"Eh Rollie!" Syd called out from the entrance to the cave, "you want to move your can a little and get down here!"
"Yeah, sure Syd," Rollie replied, looking over the position sheets and meeting him at the mouth of the cave.
"Where the charges?" he asked as Syd slapped him on the shoulder and he cringed for it was the shoulder that was still sore from the through and through bullet wound from barely a week ago.
"already been put in," Syd told him, leading him down to position 2.
"Wait Syd, who the hell placed those charges?" Rollie asked, stopping the director in mid-step.
"I did," replied Angie, curtly, "Syd trusted me to know where to place them. Besides, Doolan helped me if you’re worried. I have already entered the frequency settings into the computer. We’re just waiting on you to say when."
Rollie was beside himself. Angie’s tone was hostile. Syd was rushing him and frankly, he didn’t do a gag that he didn’t set-up himself.
"I’m going to check them myself," Rollie muttered, pushing past Angie as he went to position 2 and checked the charge position. It was the standard charge cylinders that they had used on his previous gags in Syd’s movies. They looked fine, actually he thought, setting his jaw tightly and knowing they were all staring at him and fuming.
Angie had stormed off. She couldn’t deal with his mistrust after all these years of working side by side with him. Of all people, Rollie should have had more confidence in her work. Doolan just made a face and Syd shouted up to the entrance of the cave for the actors to be brought in and placed.
Rollie found Angie outside. She was making some last minute calculations on the computer console. A trunk had rolled in loaded with airlifted equipment from New York and he found himself checking the inventory instead of trying to talk with her.
Angie for her part, saw him pass her and was relieved. Her emotions were likely to spill all over the set if he had tried to start something with her right now. She felt betrayed and alone. Her uncle had gone on ahead without her. She had been duped into a seduction and raped just 5 days ago and then this hot and heavy situation with Rollie. It had been way too much for her and she was feeling the culmination of the past week’s events just a little too much for her to stand.
She saw Dani approach Rollie before he did. The model was already in wardrobe and had finished with make-up. Angie saw them move around the corner of the truck out of her view. She slammed the control down and went back into the cave. Just her luck that one of the charge frequencies wasn’t coming up on her screen.
She found her way down in the dank, cool cave to position 12. She felt around the back of a wine cask that had been propped for the scene for the charge. She could barely reach it. She knew she hadn’t put it back this far. Her fingers barely scraped the edge and she found herself crawling back into the crevice behind the cask and flashing her penlight to find out why it had fallen back. She could hear Syd yelling from a distance and she knew Rollie was yelling something as well but she was starting to make headway with reaching the charge. She realized that she didn’t have her transceiver in, that she had left it on the chair by the console but she wanted to just get this right so Rollie wouldn’t bitch at her anymore.
With the pen light in her mouth so that both her hands were free, she finally grasped the charge and pulled it back into position. She barely had time to read the side of the cylinder when she heard position 2 blow and then position 8. She saw Dani running with a cameraman following her with a handheld motion camera. Damn, they had started the gag without her getting back. She pushed herself back into the crevice, knowing she was going to ruin the scene when the third charge went off. She knew it would be safe- they were only gag set for minor explosions for the character’s mystical powers. As Dani ran past her and she looked back toward the tunnel she had just come from, fleeing from soldiers that weren’t really there, Angie suddenly remembered what the cylinder had read in Spanish: fosforo de blanco.
"Oh God," she realized, "white phosphorus!" There was a popping sound and she was paralyzed as the charge blew and she was knocked on her back with the roar and hiss of a much greater explosion then what was supposed to have occurred. She heard screaming, Dani’s and then voices and shouting but it was the strange shower of white, dancing lights that caught her attention the most as they landed everywhere around her, on her and starting to go through her…
