Their Iberian flight landed an hour late in Madrid. Rollie mumbled something about the norm for this airline but Angie finally could relax after being tossed back and forth in the turbulence, watching ice crystals form over the wing and generally, just being nauseated and tired.
They had flown to Madrid for a new movie with the location being shot in Avila. She had never been there but read up on the history of the place. A Roman built fortress and the only walled city left in Spain. It had stood up against the Moors and had been home to the patron saint- St. Teresa. But now, as she stood up, stretching and yawning, all she could think about was a bed and sleep. They had been in Paris for all of 4 hours- no romantic interlude there. In fact, she thought to herself, Rollie and her had barely rubbed elbows since the kiss in her apartment after Loubar. Mira had called about finding a body and they had both left, not saying much after that.
"Ange, don't forget the IXB- we can't do that gag Syd wants on Thursday without it," Rollie reminded her as he stepped out into the aisle grabbing the overhead carry-on.
"Rollie, give me a break, huh- after all, it's my baby," she replied, making a face at him.
"And a cute baby, says I," he said, grinning and pinched the tip of her nose.
Angie rolled her eyes and grabbed the IXB case from under her seat. The new gadget was a combination of computer and 3D holographic projection system. She and Rollie had worked on it together and she smiled to herself thinking suddenly, 'yeah, our baby- mechanical sex had spawned this gem.'
They made their way off the plane into the airport and checked into customs and went through the normal crapola involved in checking their equipment. Someone from the set was supposed to have met them but so far, only unamused customs agents seemed interested in them.
Finally, stamped, prodded and waved through, they headed toward the baggage claim section, Angie following Rollie in the usual catching up to meet his long stride pace. She had thought about grabbing his hand and trying to feel more like a couple but it was like Rollie was totally preoccupied with the new movie and whatever Mira had told him about the body. She had guessed it wasn't Loubar but when she tried to see, both Mira and Rollie had told her to go back and were very adament. When she tried to talk with Mira alone, the police detective who had been her confidant during Loubar's deception, quickly told her she had to catch up with the FBI and that Rollie would fill her in. Every time she tried to bring up the subject, Rollie would deflect it with some other problem. It had been 2 days since the shooting and her world changing.
"Hey, Angie- check out the taxi situation and I'll grab the bags. Syd is going to pay for this," Rollie told her, pointing at the door and the long line of taxis outside.
"yeah, right there boss," she half-muttered, "I'll just go do that."
"Angie, come on, what's up?" Rollie asked, looking down at her. He was again looking preoccupied, looking around as if he was expecting someone.
"Nothing...okay- something- Rollie, it's been 2 days since Loubar and you have been jumpy and well, I just don't understand. You tell me last night that we are doing this movie in Spain. It wasn't on our schedule and now- damn it, I need to just catch my breath." Angie was standing there, folding her arms in front of her and looking at him in exasperation.
"Angela, all will be revealed once we hit the location, okay?" Rollie had taken her by both shoulders and was looking straight into her eyes but she wasn't convinced. He added a quick kiss or peck as she felt it come and go and was off to collect the bags.
She picked up the IXB again and stepped outside to the world of Spanish taxi service. Six drivers approached her and she barked back at them in Spanish that she wanted only the worst driver who would charge her the most to get to the Hotel Agumar in Madrid. Stunned, only one then stepped forward and grinned. Now, she thought, here was an honest guy.
Checked into the Agumar, they went up to their rooms, adjoining suites that had been reserved for over a month. Rollie winked at her as they rode up the elevator and she gave him her best unimpressed look back. The bellboy promptly put them in their respective rooms and Angie flopped on her bed, groaning.
"Hey, open the door, Ange-" she heard Rollie say from the other side of the suite door.
"why?" she responded, but then got up and went over to open it.
"snazzy place, eh," Rollie said, bounding in and hopping on her bed.
"oh yeah," she replied, as she walked over to the bedside, "Rollie, come on- tell me what the hell we are doing here and further more, what the hell is going on. What's up with that body in the park. I know it wasn't Loubar."
"Angie...Angie..." he begin, grabbing her hand and then pulling her to the bed beside him, "I told you, not before the location site." Rollie was tracing her cheek with his finger and then bent over slowly, his lips coming down on hers with a gentle brush.
Angie took advantage of it and let her tongue slip out and startle him. It did the trick however and for the first time, she felt him really want her as his hands slid over her body and pull up her shirt. He was moving his hips inot hers in rhythmn and she thought, yes, finally they were going to make love.
The phone rang, a nasty two ring buzzing that stopped them, and Rollie rolled over and answered as Angie just felt back and let out a deep breath.
"Syd!" Where the hell are you, mate?" Rollie said, his face suddenly animated and smiling.
Angie got up and started to turn on the water in her shower. That phone call could last forever. On the last movie that Sydney Waterstreet had made, Rollie and him had spent hours chewing the fat about Australia and playing some Aussie card game that she never understood the rules for...she pulled off her clothes and stepped into the warm, inviting water.
When she stepped out, wrapping the towel around her, she shook her wet hair out and walked out, still expecting the conversation to be in full gear but Rollie wasn't there.
"Rollie?" she called, and stepped through the door into his adjoining room. It was vacant. Everything was still where he had left it but he was gone.
Angie shook her head. Right, she thought, Syd had called him down probably to the lobby and they were out for the night. Great- she was going to go to bed and then, she would talk with Rollie in the morning. Something had to give and she wasn't going to let this evasive behavior go on. She climbed into her bed and turned off the lights. Spain was starting out to be a headache and she wanted to just forget everything for a little while and sleep, really sleep.
"Wake up, Ange," she heard the voice say off in the distance, but she was having a good dream and didn't want to come out of it. Her mother was there and serving her a cool lemonade in the little house where they had lived in Cuba. She could taste and feel and smell everything, just like she had never left. Her mother's voice was so soothing and she wanted to stay, but the other voice was calling her, now she could feel him shaking her...her mother's face disappeared.
"What?" she asked, rubbing her eyes and looking up in the dim light of morning, "Rollie?"
"Yeah," he answered, still wearing what he had on the night before, "We got to get going to Avila, pack up. Syd is waiting in the car downstairs."
"Rollie Tyler," Angie begin, her anger now to the point she was not to be put off, "I am not going anywhere until you tell me what is going on."
Rollie sat down on the bed beside her and she could smell the booze and the cigar stench of Syd on his clothes and in his hair. He stroked her hair and kissed her, "We don't have anytime here. Let's take it to the car and I'll explain it there."
"You need a shower and a shave," she said, making a face, "you stink."
"Yeah, okay- a quick one," he replied and stood up, pulling his shirt off. "Come on, get the lead out, get going," he continued as he pulled her up quickly and she grabbed the sheet to cover herself.
"oh," was all he could manage as he noted her bareness and he turned quickly and went into his room and turned on the water in his shower.
"great," Angie replied, "all the sudden, you're all shy. What happened to that guy with Danny..." she made a face as she recalled the model turned actress that he had bedded during the making on her movie ten months ago. What she had endured with that stuck up, talentless amazon.
She was dressed, packed and waiting as the new, improved Rollie met her in the hall. He smiled at her and together, they left the Agumar and strode over to the Landrover and its grinning occupant.
"Angela, my little sweetie," called out the familiar voice of Syd Waterstreet, "We missed you last night."
"I wasn't invited, Syd," she replied as she got in with Rollie shoving the bags in the back.
Syd gave Rollie a look and Rollie smiled back at Angie who had taken the back seat as if on cue. Rollie jumped into the front with Syd and he pulled off with a screech of tires and the journey began to Avila.
"Angie, you'll love Avila. It's quaint, you know...all them walls and relics and stuff," Syd went on.
"Ahuh," she replied staring at the back of Rollie's head. Just what was he up to? she wondered as he smiled, almost nervously back at her and then back to Syd.
"Syd," Angie asked, sitting up in her seat, "So, what's going on here?"
"Nothing sis," he replied, "nothing but a great little movie I've got planned. We are calling it at this moment, 'The Curse of St. Teresa'."
Angie rolled her eyes and moaned, "Don't let the Vatican hear about it." Rollie laughed and Syd just grumbled under his breath.
The ride took over 6 hours with Rollie and Syd doing most of the talking. Angie amused herself with looking at the script, the gag sheets and started to think about this horrendous project. It finally appeared on the casting sheet ehy Rollie had been so weird. There, in the starring role was Danny.
Rollie looked back at her as they neared the walled city to the west. She merely pointed to the name and he shrugged his shoulders as if he hadn't known she would be there.
"So Syd," Angie suddenly voiced out, "You really see Danny as St. Teresa?"
