"This is priceless!" Mira remarked, and sat down on the edge of the bed, "the guy who is responsible for this doesn’t know what to say!"
Rollie blinked, "Responsible?" he asked, confused.
"Yeah, you big jerk- you coached Michael and the guy was following me everywhere. I don’t know what you two talked about but look at the result. You happy now?"
"Uh- Mira, it takes two to make a baby, you know," Rollie said, still in shock.
Angie suppressed a smile as she aped him from his conversation to her earlier; "you know, man- woman, then oops, and baby makes three."
"No comments from the peanut gallery!" Mira warned her as Rollie gave Angie a sharp look.
"Okay, I’m starting to grasp this whole thing, now," Rollie said, "let’s don’t panic."
"Panic? Oh Rol, that was days ago!" Mira said, looking down at the print report, "by the way, you know a Nick Kapis?"
"No- Mira, what are you and Michael going to do about this?" Rollie wasn’t interested in the print report right now. Mira’s whole life, her career – it was all going to change.
"I am going to have this baby, then strap it on my back and go on," she said as Angie sat down beside her, looking at the report she held in her hand, "Michael, now that’s another story."
"He loves you Mira!" Rollie told her, in earnest.
"And guess what?" she said, angrily, "I love him but it isn’t enough. He was never there when we were married. We never knew if each other was even coming home at night. He lied to me and left me, don’t forget that. These past weeks, they were like old times but just like before, he’s gone now."
Angie could see the hurt in her eyes that she tried so hard to hide. Rollie was seething about Michael. Was his job that important to him, more than his love for Mira? He looked at Angie who had touched Mira’s arm. They shared a look between them.
"I’m going to talk to Michael!" Rollie said, determined.
"Good luck finding him," Mira voiced, as she shook his head, "I’ve tried everyone- FBI, Interpol, CIA- no one will tell me anything. Look, I didn’t come over here to lay this in your lap- I got a print report from Bluey’s back. It came back as Nick Kapis. You know him or not?"
"No, but I’ll ask Dingo. He had the dealings with these blokes," Rollie replied, then looked over to Angie who was turning a little green again.
"Not again?" he asked her, sympathizing.
"Uh, I hope not- Mira, I was poisoned last evening with a Hoagie from JoeyB’s," Angie told her as Mira felt her forehead.
"You are warm! Get in bed! Rollie, why aren’t you taking care of her?" Mira began to bark orders at him and had Angie under the covers, taking some fluids as the detective monitored her temperature before she left.
"Okay, looks like my job is done here," Mira told them, smiling, and Angie grinned, "listen Tyler, remember- ‘in sickness and in health’."
"Yeah, and you remember- ‘til death do we part’," he retaliated.
Mira made a face at him, "I’ll show myself out- call Dingo and ask him about this Kapis guy. Take it easy Angie. Talk with you guys later and don’t talk about me too much after I go, okay?"
She was halfway down the stairs as she said this and Rollie looked at Angie who smiled wanly and rolled her eyes up at him; "sorry about being sick, Rollie."
"Hey, what? Forget that, Ange- I want you to do just like Mama Mira said, okay?"
"I guess you’re glad that it wasn’t me that was pregnant, huh?" she said, softly.
"Yes!" He said it with a deep exhale and she frowned slightly; "but, you know it is not because I don’t want children, right?"
"I wish Michael wasn’t such a jerk."
"You and me both, Ange."
"Gonna call Dingo about that Kapis character?"
"Yeah- but I never know if I am going to disturb him and Dorinda."
"Oh, take it from me, they aren’t doing anything that you would disturb!" she told him, her eyes full of amusement, "at least, I don’t think so."
"They were at bit terse there, at breakfast, weren’t they?" replied Rollie, as he remembered Dorinda’s less than hovering state over Dingo.
"Umm, hey Rollie, mind if I fall asleep? I just can’t seem to keep my eyes open," Angie said, yawning as her eyes drooped and fluttered back open again.
"No, love. Go on and sleep. I’ll call Dingo and ask him." Rollie came over to where Angie was trying to pull off her shirt and he helped her undress. As she turned over on her side, he kissed her little yellow rose and she laughed. As he turned to leave the room, she heard him whistling ‘the yellow rose of Texas’ all the way down the stairs.
Angie woke that afternoon. She felt like a new woman as she scrounged around the room, looking for her clothes. She came down the stairs, stiff and a little groggy as she saw Rollie drinking tea and working on the Ectoplasmic Creature’s movements from his remote. He had that determined set to his jaw as he overcompensated on a left turn and the Creature ended up stomping into the wall.
"Ooh! Even as a ghost monster, he can’t see where he is going!" Angie remarked, laughing as she made her way over to them. Rollie smiled, startled slightly from her voice, and tried to flatten her cowlick that was sticking up on top of her head.
"Stop, it won’t do any good. I look worse than Ectoplasmic Creature right now!"
He smiled, " I called Dingo. He doesn’t recall that name."
"Did you ask Dorinda?"
"What? Why?" Rollie asked her, suddenly standing up, grabbing the remote unit and pulling his Creature up off the floor.
"Hmm, maybe nothing… but, have you ever thought why it was that Dorinda tried to steal that ring from Dingo in that tavern in Sydney?"
"She said she admired it and wanted it."
"Yeah, but I just get this very strange feeling about her."
"Like what?"
"She gives me the creeps."
"What?"
"Yeah, her eyes and just the way she holds herself."
"She’s pretty, you know- sexy!"
"You really think so?" Angie folded her arms across her chest and looked at Rollie. She was beginning to worry now if he thought Dorinda was sexy. Of course, Dingo was affected the same way.
"Present company excluded, of course," he remarked quickly then, trying to cover for himself.
"I don’t know, somehow- I just get the feeling that she’s trying too hard," Angie said, taking the remote from Rollie, "you got this left foot reanimate sequence set wrong."
"That’s why I got you, sweetie- you complete me!" he mugged, as she made a face at his quote from ‘Jerry Maguire’.
"Show me the money!" she replied, holding out her hand.
He turned her hand over, looking at his paste ring and kissed the top of her hand, "I wish you could be wearing the real thing right now. Once Dingo gets his sharks off his back and gets out of here, we just might be able to get back on track."
"As in, the M word?" she asked, her eyes brightening.
"Yeah, that word," he replied, finishing the remote input.
"what word?" she asked him, again, trying to meet his eyes with her own.
"the word"
"which is?" Angie asked, ready to strangle him with his banter.
"Liturgical epithalamy," he replied, not looking up at her as he made the Creature move toward her and fall to its monster knees in front of her. He had taken some pliers and was getting ready to adjust a circuit in its motor pack.
"Rollie, you been falling asleep watching the Learning Channel, again!" she remarked, mussing his hair with her hand, "break it down to a simpleton like me, okay?"
"Marriage, my dear- when are we going to just DO it?" he asked, grinning and looked up at her finally.
"Today would be okay…"
Rollie nearly swallowed the little pliers he had been holding in his mouth while trying to pull off the cover to the pack.
