Note: "AU" sequel to A Labor Day of Love. Unfortunately, the timing was off to fit Jill's actual Holiday series. Fortunately, it means she still owes a 'first date' fic!
"So where are you taking me on my date?" Angie looked at her friend, and maybe more one day soon, as the subway rushed by outside.
"You'll see." He smiled cryptically.
Angie frowned, they were both dressed casually, Rollie wore shorts even,a rarity for him, she had snickered at his white stick legs and he had given her an evil look in return. The Aussie had picked up a backpack and they headed out. She never expected to end up on the subway though.
"Here's our stop."
"Flushing Meadows?"
He nodded and led her off the subway and they walked in silence as Angie looked around. She suddenly stopped and he turned to her.
"The U.S. Open?"
"Yep." He grinned.
"Who's playing?" She asked as he pulled her along to keep from getting swallowed up by the throng of tennis fans behind them.
"Pat Cash and some guy from Vegas."
"Oh Rol!" She beamed.
"Come on sweetie." He chuckled as they walked to the tennis center.
They ate lunch then proceeded to the stadium to watch Pat Cash and the Vegas showman, Andre Agassi, Angie's favorite player. He had wanted their first date to be fun and relaxing and decided this would be perfect. He pulled their sunglasses out, glad he had brought then since it turned out to be a bonzer day and he removed the suntan lotion as well, with Angie's fair skin she would need it. Less than ten minutes later the players walked out to thunderous applause which the couple joined in.
"He is so cute."
Rollie looked at her and frowned.
"Oh...but...I'm with a cute guy too." She added quickly.
Rollie harrumped and turned away. He was startled when she grabbed his face a moment later and kissed him.
"Ange." He breathed.
"I couldn't do that to Andre." She smiled at him.
"Bloke doesn't know what he's missing." Rollie uttered.
"Only you will Rol." She promised sliding her hand into his.
"Good shot Andre!" She shouted as he hit a point winning return.
Rollie chuckled then several minutes later shouted too.
"Ace ace mate!"
"Hey!" Angie glared at him.
"What?"
"You're rooting for Cash!"
"Bloody right I'm rooting for the Aussie!"
"So you had an ulterior motive!"
"Yeah, to make this a fun date."
"Loser buys dinner." She challenged.
"If you can get Andre to pay..."
She punched him in the arm and he chuckled then slid an arm around her shoulder and was pleased when she settled into him.
The match played on with the couple rooting for each of their favorites with Andre finally being too much for the thirty year old Aussie.
"Looks like you buy." She poked him in the ribs as they exited the stadium.
"Maybe Pat and I should both retire." He sighed.
"Retire?!?" She gaped at him.
"Yeah, fill out the GY forms." He nodded looking away.
"Do Aussie's have to fill out GY forms at retirement, even if they live elsewhere?"
"When we get old." He nodded.
"You are not old!"
"You said I was. Guess I need to call about them."
"You are not retiring Roland Tyler!" She declared.
"Maybe you should fill them out then."
"Me? Why?" She asked taken aback.
"GY stands for..." He looked over the rim of his sunglasses and grinned at her, "gotcha!"
Her mouth fell open and he started to laugh.
"Rollie Tyler!" She growled.
"Who teased me about Donna Summer and Air Supply just a few days ago?" He eyed her.
Angie huffed then sighed realizing she had deserved it for the cracks about his age.
"But you still have to buy dinner." She smirked.
"You get pizza."
"Fine by me, let's go, I'm famished." She replied taking his arm after he donned the backpack.
The pizza place had video games so they played against each other while their pie was made then Rollie went to the restroom.
He returned just as the pizza was delivered to their table and surprised her with a small stuffed koala.
"I got it from the grabber machine." He shrugged.
"He's cute. I think I'll call him...Cash." She grinned.
"Not Agassi?" He chuckled.
"I spent a wonderful day with an Aussie." She shook her head.
Rollie smiled and they ate their etire pizza hungrily.
"I don't want the day to end." Angie admitted as Rollie walked her to her door that evening.
"Six a.m call." He reminded.
"Yeah. I had a great time on our first "official" date Mr.Tyler." She smiled.
"I'm really glad Ange."
This time Rollie kissed her slowly and tenderly.
"Bye Ange." He smiled and left.
Angie bit her lower lip and smiled then held up the little koala.
"This could be the start of a beautiful friendship." She said with an Aussie accent then giggled and went inside.
Historians note: I did an internet search but found no evidence Andre and Pat ever played each other in the 1997 U.S. Open which is the year Pat Cash officially retired.
Finally, why Andre and Pat? Well, I like Andre, as for Pat...it was a little show called..."This Is Your Life"...Cameron Daddo. As his Pop said, "Pat went on and you went out."
Hope you guys liked their first date.
BTW: Pat Rafter (OZ) went on to beat Greg Rusedski (UK) in the finals.
