Chapter 5 :
A yell was heard.
Alex got up
with a start and leapt towards her window. She froze at the sight of what she saw happening in front of her:
the young blonde woman who had arrived from the ferry the day before was lying
in the middle of the road. Her face was pale, and on her white shirt, a red stain
kept growing...
The yelling
had stopped and the new yorker’s blue eyes closed.
A shadow
Alex didn’t want to recognize took the body by the arms and dragged it along in
the neighbouring dark houses.
Alex stood
still as hypnotized by the trail that the body had left. Muffling a cry, she hurtled down the stairs and
rushed outside.
The clock
displayed midnight.
Once she was
out, shivering in her night outfit, she remained speechless with amazement : the
street was silent. There was no
sign of what she had seen happen.
Panicking,
she went back to her office to find the room number she had rent to her guest.
“Number 13”.
Gathering
her courage, and ready to apologize for bothering her guest in her sleep, she went
up to knock at her door.
“Miss
Graiman???....” She banged her fist on
the closed door... “Alizee???”
There was a
complete silence.
With a
shaking hand, she grabbed the key of the room.
“I’m sorry
but I’m going to get in... Miss Graiman???.. Lizzie??? Please.... I’m going to
get in if you don’t answer me....”
She knocked
again on the door, louder and louder...
“Lizzie???”
Facing this
silence, Alex briefly closed her eyes and then inserted the key into the lock.
The room was
dark. Groping around, she found the switch and the light made her jump.
The bed was
empty - not even undone - and her
luggage was also there - not even unpacked.
She scanned
the room and found a laptop computer in
stand-by mode. She moved slowly closer to it. She knew she only had to
move the mouse a little or to push a key to put it back on again. With her
index finger, she pushed the mouse and what she saw on the screen petrified her
with horror....

Kevin had
been busying himself about for
one hour now in the small room....
Worried, he turned back to Alex :
“Listen,
it’s not that I want to call your word
into question but, beside this,”
he pointed the computer screen, “I cannot do anything... You tell me that you
heard a yell, you tell me you saw “dark
traces” but... the road is spotlessly clean. That woman can be anywhere...”
He shook his head. “I’m sorry but I can’t do anything before 48 hours. She is a
grown-up, she can go wherever she wants to.”
He took her
hand, “You may have been “taken over” by your imagination with this Halloween
week....”
Alex drew
her hand away sharply.
“I didn’t
make up anything!!!” she told him, her eyes black with anger. “Do you think I
would have called you, risking to wake up my son and to make him have nightmares,
for a made-up story?!?!”
The man of
law looked down. He had no answer to that question.
He looked
again at the computer screen which has gone back to the stand-by mode.
“Listen, I’m
gonna put the room under seals, just in case. I’m going to ask to my trainee to
stand guard in case your guest would come back... At least, they would not have
sent me a trainee for nothing!” He
sighed, looking up at the sky.
“Alex!!!
What’s going on here?” Daniel suddenly arrived in the room. “I was at the
Brahe’s, Amy’s parents, when I had a phone call from Boris who told me the
police was here and... But why are you looking at me like this??”
Alex was
watching him, her face was pale. Last night’s images were coming back to her
again. She couldn’t keep her eyes off Daniel. A thrill ran through her back. Perhaps
it had been a dream... As she was plunging in those brown eyes she liked so
much, she found herself praying : “God, Tell me that that it was a dream!”
