Chapter 3 :

“Hello...? is there anyone ?”

It was 5pm. Alex got out of her office and found out a young blonde woman, wrapped up in a brown jacket, wearing a black beret with a white logo and surrounded by 2 suitcases.

“Hello, what can I do for you ?”

“It would be for a room... do you have some left ?”

“Actually, at this time of the year, we don’t have a lot of tourists, she told her smiling. She opened her reservation book.  Well, you have the choice of the number from 4 to 15 !”

“Is number 13 free ?”

Alex looked up, surprised : not a lot of people usually wanted this room that she even thought about cancelling it.

“Sure, no problem : your name, please ?”

“Alizee Graiman.”, the young woman took off her gloves and held out a kind hand to Alex who shacked it friendly, “But everyone calls me Lizzie...”

“Pleased to meet you, and I am Alex.... May I ask you where you come from...? You have a little accent that I would say is from the east coast...”

Alizee started to laugh, “What good ears! That’s right, I’m from New York.”

“From NY.... Wow! It’s far from here...”

“Actually, I have to work on the coast for some weeks, but I’ve been told so many beautiful things about your island that I decided to settle here.”

“And what is your job, if it’s not too indiscreet...”

The young woman started to laugh again. She signed the reservation book and leaned forward Alex, “You promise not to tell anyone?”  Surprised, Alex nodded.  “I am a private detective...”

Alex’s eyes widened. She looked at her guest from bottom to top, stopping on her so sweet blue-eyed face.

“A private detective?” she repeated, surprised.

And again, the young woman began to laugh, “I know, I don’t look like one, but that’s a great help in my job!!”  She winked at Alex, “Could you help me get my luggage upstairs?”

“No problem, and if you’re hungry, our cook is there until 10 pm, so you just have to come have dinner here or phone the reception so that you can eat something...”

“Great !”

At the same time, Daniel, surrounded by kids, was beginning to tell a strange legend about Halloween...

Chapter 4 :

“Dylan!!! Is that when you’re coming back home??!! You know that at this time of the year I don’t like you coming back after 7pm!!”

Alex, holding one tray, stopped a moment to see her son hang his clothes to the coat rack.

“But mum, I was not alone!! I was with my friends and Daniel!!!”

Alex sighed.

“I’ll have to talk to Daniel about the time you’re supposed to come back home, especially in the week! ... And what about your homework?”

“I did it when I came back from school. And it was really cool!! Daniel began to tell a really great Halloween story and...”

“Listen, I don’t really have time right now, but go and see Boris, eat something and then go to your room...”

Dylan sighed and obeyed to his mother’s orders. Walking up in the stairs, he nearly crashed into a young woman he didn’t know, “Excuse me, madam...”

“No worries, I was the one who was not looking!”  She leant over the kid’s ear, “Couldn’t you just call me Lizzie? I have the impression of being an old woman when someone calls me “Madam”.“

She straightened up giving him a wink.

“No problem, Mad...Lizzie...”

“DYLAN?!!? What did I tell you?”

The young boy took a look over the railings and met his mother’s look.

“ ‘Got to get in my room... See you tomorrow!!”

Alizee smiled widely, “Yeah, see you tomorrow, Dylan...”

It was almost 10 pm and there were still some people left. That’s then that the door opened.

“So Alex, nothing new??”  Callie Pender took her hat off and unrolled her scarf while settling herself to the counter.

Alex smiled to her “Nothing that can be the 1st page of your newspaper... I was about to close but do you want anything? A coffee?”

“With pleasure...” Callie straightened up on her chair, “any new comers ?”

Alex looked at her, surprised, “Since when my guests interest you ?”

Alex poured coffee in a cup.

“Well... I met Nub sooner and he told me that a “very beautiful young lady” had just arrived to your inn... Who is she?”

Alex started to laugh.

“She is a young woman from New York who works in Seattle... At first glance, she has been advised to come to Hope Island...for its quietness...”, she ended saying, winking.

“Ok...so, I won’t get any more info ?”, Callie said, enjoying the hot beverage she had just been served.

“You got that right !”

Alex went back in the kitchen. Passing Molly who was ready to go, she took her arm and said softly, “You know our new guest wants calm, and well, we have Callie here at the counter...if you see what I mean... “, ending with a wink.

Molly smiled, “Ok, boss !”
