Tony Alvarez, meanwhile, was busy delivering the masks he had finished to the set of Derni Magic. As he entered the F/X trailer, he threw the box with the masks on the couch and went over to the computer terminal that he had been using for business. Not to say that it was F/X business, as he grinned and began his search of the want ads in New York City. He was particularly interested in assistant wanted type jobs. As he copied several that he saw listed, he would call them up. If a man answered, he would hang up. If a woman answered, he would ask about the job and what it entailed. He then would set up a time to come over for an interview. He had struck gold only four times in the past two years with what he was looking for, but it didn't matter. Sometimes, he let it go on for some time before he remedied his needs.
Lucinda was checking through the student register, asking to see the graduate students listed in film school. She held out her SAG card and her agent’s card as the registrar shook his head;
"Nope, forget it!" he said, smiling slightly as he noted the baby in the carrier, "You could be looking for dead-beat daddy, for all I know."
"Thanks for you help!" she replied, sarcastically as she smiled wickedly and strode off down the hallway. She knew if she hung around long enough, she would find someone who knew Tony Alvarez if he existed…
"Cute baby," commented a girl around twenty who was sitting in the small cafeteria where Lucinda had decided to set up camp.
"Thanks, he’s a doll, isn’t he?" Lucinda replied, smiling as the girl made baby noises to Aidan.
"Oh well, gotta go. My- 'emote a boat' class is next!" the student remarked, rolling her eyes.
Lucinda repeated what she had said and laughed, "Oh, I get it- the touchy-feelies!"
"Yeah, they called it that about ten years ago…" the student replied, laughing and Lucinda’s face dropped slightly realizing it had been ten years since college.
"Hey, can I ask you something?" Lucinda asked quickly as the girl got up to leave.
"Sure…"
"Uh, I’m looking for Tony Alvarez. He’s a graduate student here and I have been waiting to talk to him all day. We were supposed to meet in here for coffee and a chat. I am doing some research, you see, on classic horror films and I had heard he was the best!"
"Tony?" the girl laughed, almost hysterically.
"What’s so funny?" Lucinda asked, the laughter infectious.
"Oh, I have never thought of Tony as a classic horror film buff. I mean, yeah- he might watch one once in a while, but he’s more into, you know- Vanguard, uh- alternative life style movies, you know."
"Oh?" Lucinda raised her eyebrows, "could you tell me where I might find him?"
"Sure, follow me…his class is nearby. He’s probably in there teaching right now," she said and Lucinda got up, grabbing Aidan’s carrier and headed off following the young woman down the hall.
"There’s his classroom, good luck!" the girl told Lucinda, shaking her head, chuckling to herself and Lucinda, moistening her lips, peeked through the door.
A man was pacing back and forth, a hand on one hip as he then sauntered over to a young man who had obviously been put on the spot with a rapid-fire question.
"No, you lose, Mr. Tarrentino! Someone pullleeeez answer my question…Mr. Spielberg, how about you? Doesn’t anyone remember what a deuce shot is?"
Lucinda panned the room and saw a bunch of lackluster students who were ready for the bell. The man, frustrated, turned around toward the blackboard and as he did, he saw Lucinda staring through the door, holding the baby.
"Aha! You look more alive than my students today! Can I help you?"
"I’m not sure, I’m looking for Tony Alvarez? I was told he taught this class," Lucinda remarked, as Aidan jumped in startled reflex as the man cooed at him.
"You’ve found the one and only!" he said, making a face as if to be worshipped.
"You’re kidding, you’re Tony Alvarez?" Lucinda asked, incredulously.
"And what’s so surprising about that?" he replied, feigning his hurt feelings as the class laughed behind them.
"Oh, nothing- it’s just that I met someone who said he was Tony Alvarez and he, well- he wasn’t you. Know what I mean?" Lucinda explained and then looked down at Aidan.
"Oh, OH!" he exclaimed, putting his hands to his cheeks and rolling his eyes, "Could it have been that one time at a party last fall…I had a momentary lapse of orientation and "gasp", tried to heal myself of this affliction?"
He turned around to the class and they were laughing as Lucinda got the drift and looked him square in the eyes; "okay, thanks for your help, Alvarez. I’ll be sure to tell Steven about you once I get back to L.A." she said, flippantly, "oh, and a deuce shot is when the camera pans down around the shoulder of an actor on an aside where he is grinning demonically."
She turned around and started to leave, a stunned Alvarez looking at her back as she headed down the hallway.
"Wait! Hey, yoo-hoo! What’s your name?" he called after her, as she waved, not looking back.
"Lucinda Scott, you know- THE Lucinda Scott."
A student walked up behind Alvarez as he stood perplexed in the doorway. The young man was grinning and shaking his head; "Hey, I thought that was her. Man, she is my favorite B movie actress. But hey, she just made the big time with Tomb Raiders! She rocked!"
Tony Alvarez pursed his lips and moaned slightly, "Oh my, I should try and stop being so bitchy to people."
Lucinda now knew something, something on a grand scale as far as she was concerned. Tony Alvarez was not Tony Alvarez! She giggled to herself and carried Aidan out to hail a cab. She decided her next stopping point would be midtown south and a visit with Mira Sanchez.
"I can’t wait to get back home!" Angie told Rollie as they sat beside each other on the packed flight home. Rollie smiled, closing his eyes. He had no post-operative pain with the outpatient surgery that Eckmiller had performed. He almost worried that he felt nothing but a little less tearing. Angie had placed the small vial with the implants inside the battery pack of the PDA for the trip. She had placed it then, in her carry-on purse, which she kept close to her. She leaned her head against Rollie’s shoulder and let out a big sigh.
"I hope Rolph is a man of his word," Rollie said, as Angie touched his hand and placed her head on his chest, hearing his heart beating strongly against her ear.
"I think he will be, Rol. I don’t know, something just tells me that he will be…" Angie answered, and closed her eyes as well.
Mira Sanchez was busy chewing on a carrot stick at her desk when a squeal rang out at the precinct and at least one cop, put his hand on the butt of his gun in reflex.
"Mira!"
There could be only one voice like that, thought Mira as she turned around and saw Lucinda Scott, making her way through the aisles of desks, carrying a baby carrier and knocking things off as she passed by.
"Luce! Oh! And you’ve brought Aidan for a visit!" Mira remarked, hugging her as Lucinda put Aidan down on Mira’s desk and caught her breath.
Aidan was like a magnet to the entire squad room then as everyone gathered to render themselves into babbling idiots before him. Even Vanduran peeked out, almost bug-eyed to see what was going on. He saw a very attractive woman with Mira Sanchez and unfortunately, a baby.
As he made his way over to Sanchez’s desk, he raised his eyebrows slightly as Mira cleared her voice and said; "Captain, uh- this is Lucinda Scott. She’s a friend of Rollie Tyler’s and mine. She brought over Aidan Tyler, she’s watching him while Angie and Rollie are in Germany."
Vanduran lost the frown immediately and smiled at Lucinda who saw the attraction in his eye and didn’t waste a second.
"You guys will not believe my little trouble back at the loft!"
"What trouble?" Vanduran was on it like a tick on a hound dog as she batted her eyes and continued with controlled emotion as she told them about Tony Alvarez and the real one at NYU. She also told them that this man pretending to be Alvarez was privy to a lot of security stuff around the loft now that Angie had hired him as her assistant.
"This doesn’t sound good," Mira said, worried as Vanduran put a hand to his chin and stayed with the conversation. Mira was taken back with Vanduran’s interest in this story that Lucinda was telling. Usually, he was brisk, no nonsense and jumping down everyone’s throats for taking a break, much less babbling on with a baby and a beautiful woman.
"He, out and out told me, he was after Angie and replacing Rollie!" Lucinda said, clenching her fists and then added; "hey, you guys, what can I do?"
"We can’t really do anything unless he threatens you," Mira said as Lucinda thought about that and then said;
"Well, he grabbed me last night and kissed me forcefully against my will! That’s gotta be sexual battery or something?"
"Nothing else?" Mira asked, as Lucinda thought that it was distasteful enough and Vanduran stepped forward taking her by the arm.
"You poor thing! We can certainly do something about it! We can file sexual harassment charges…" he began as he escorted her toward his office, leaving Mira with Aidan as Lucinda whispered a silent "help" to Mira who only chuckled and let her suffer.
She looked at Aidan Tyler, his little cheeks so fat that they rested on his chest as he lay in the carrier. He looked like a chubby little Rollie/Angie mix of features as she bit her lip, wanting to hold him so badly.
About a half-hour later, Vanduran opened his door and Lucinda came out, her cheeks flushed as well as Vanduran’s. She came over to Mira excitedly and sat down, bulging with news.
"You’ll never guess! I’ve got a date and a guy that’s going to help me get rid of Mr. Tony Alvarez!"
"Oh no! He asked you out?" Mira said, rolling her eyes as she thought about how boring Vanduran would be on a date.
"Well, it’s a working date! He’s going to snoop around for me and get the goods on this Tony guy, whatever his real name is. I have already been enlisted to lift prints and all! I think it’s cool! And just maybe, I can get this wrapped up before Angie and Rollie get back!"
"I think you need to get this bambino home, changed and fed!" Mira said, as she stood up, Aidan awake now and voicing his complaints readily.
"Right! Oh, and Mira…thanks for getting me some help on this, I feel so privileged to have the best!" Luce hugged her as Mira shook her head. The best, she thought to herself, now there was something funny!
Aidan was fussy and a little devil by the time they arrived back at the loft. After Bluey let them inside, Lucinda quickly changed a very irritated baby and then soothed him quickly with dry diapers and a warm bottle of milk. She looked around the loft as she rocked him in her arms, feeding him and tried to think where she had seen Tony the most, what he had touched the most. He had eaten last night with her, but she had washed the dishes. He had been working on Rollie’s workbench but she didn’t know exactly what he had touched. She would watch him later today and pay attention to any item he touched so that she could deliver it to Vanduran later.
She tucked Aidan into the crib, on his side, propping him slightly with a pillow to his back and she began to snoop around. She decided to rerun the security tapes. It would be boring, she knew but there may have been something that she could use so she started to view them, one at a time- her eyes drooping as she heard nothing and saw nothing out of the ordinary. She had laid her head down on the workbench, slightly drooling as she heard a voice, a low, deep, man’s voice talking about Angie. He was saying vile things and she looked up, startled to see Tony pacing back and forth by the workbench. His hands were clenched tightly together and he was punching his fists against his own chest as she heard terrible things being uttered like a mad man- surely a deranged one! The loft door opened and Angie appeared with Rollie. Tony looked startled for a moment and then sat calmly down on the stool, welcoming them home.
"Great Caesar’s ghost!" she remarked out loud, as she whipped the tape out of the playback and clutched it to her chest.
"What kind of nut is he?"
