The tall man rolled over, he could feel the warm breeze through the open window gently caressing his face. He felt a movement next to him, and turned to look at his new young bride. Her blonde hair splayed across the pillow, surrounding her face like a halo. Her eyes were closed and a serene smile graced her face. As she slept he could see the innocence of youth in her face, all the trials and tribulations of their lives vanished with the peacefulness of sleep.
He carefully slid out from under the sheet and stood, moving slowly as not to disturb his wife. After quietly dressing he crept out of their Bure and scuffed his toes through the sand as he wandered through the tropical forest. He walked past the main Bure and the dining area before reaching the beach. The sand felt cold under his feet in the pre dawn light, he knew without a doubt that it would be much hotter in a short few hours.
There was little surf as the tall man sat down in the sand by the water's
edge. The black sky was tempered by the sparkle of the millions of southern
stars. He smiled up at the familiar constellations, not quite where
they should be for this island was further north than his homeland but
still familiar enough. Their brightness began to fade as the treacle
sky developed a rich purple hue. The colour ripened through the rainbow
of colours, ruby reds, burnt oranges, and
lemon yellows. Just as he began to think there were no more colours
for the sky to change to the sun pushed the first few tendrils of light
over the horizon and across the water. The light had a magical effect
on the water, the deep dark blues counterpoint with the diamond sparkle
on the surface, and gradually the blues became lighter as if lit from underneath.
The deep navy becoming mid blue out in the deep water, and a lighter turquoise
blue over the sand close to
shore. The little surf there was frothed and foamed like a beast
possessed, adding action without taking away from the tranquillity of the
scene.
He smiled happily, watching the beauty of nature develop a new day for him. And he nodded in greeting to the man, another guest, jogging in the coolness of the early morning. He sat thinking of his luck and good fortune at being in this paradise, with the one woman he loved more than life itself, as the sun wrapped him in its warmth. He chuckled in amusement as the same jogger ran past him again, running in the same direction as he had on the first pass. The island was so small, it only took 10 minutes to walk around its shores'.
The tall man stretched as he stood and he walked slowly back through
the tropical forest to the small bure. Despite lacking in size the
island still managed to exude a sense of privacy, something all honeymooning
couples would feel was important. He tiptoed into the bedroom, she
was just as he had left her, her hair splayed out, her lashes resting on
her cheeks and a hand casually flopped across bed. He lifted her
hand out of the way as he slid back in between the sheets, she mumbled
drowsily and rolled towards him instinctively. He took her in an
embrace and dozed off again, confident that this was a new beginning for
them both, the start of an even better future.
