Chapter 10 Reunion At Last
The drive back to the convent was getting harder and harder to take as the tears in Angie's eyes were very difficult for Mira to see and listening to her beat up on herself for not telling her mother or sister who she was worse. She couldn't take it anymore and abruptly pulled the van over to the ocean side of the road.
Angie: What are you doing?
Mira: Just get out okay?
Angie: Why?
Mira: Just trust me okay!
Angie followed Mira on to the beach then asked. "Now what?"
Mira then picked up some rocks and handed them to Angie.
"What do you want me to do with these?" Angie asked in impatient voice.
"Throw them as hard as you can to vent some of that anger of yours." Mira said in an authoritative voice.
Mira then watched as Angie threw rocks until she exhausted herself. She then went over to join Angie, as she sat on the sand, to take the time to restore her composer.
Mira: Feel any better?
Angie: Yeah, But I'll feel even better after this.
Mira then watched as Angie got up and found two large rocks and threw them into the water. When Angie turned back from what she had just done she seen the puzzled look on Mira's face.
"That’s to represent my father and I. We may as well of sank to the bottom of the ocean just like my mother thought we did for all she cares." Angie said in voice that sent chills through Mira.
Mira: You don't know for sure what your Mother is going through.
Angie: Oh come on Mira! She just found out her daughter was alive and she took off of up that hill to Morales like a bat out of hell. I may as well be dead to her.
Mira: Don't talk that way Angie!
Angie: Why not? I may as well face the truth and get it over with.
Mira: We don't know for sure what that is, she did say she would be in touch.
Angie: You seen the look on her face she wasn't exactly excited by the idea.
Mira: You know as well as I that we never know for sure how someone is going to react under those kind of circumstances. Look at yourself you didn't even tell her that your Angela.
Angie: I guess your right…. I don't know what I ever did to deserve having you here to point that out to me. Looking very sheepish she then gave Mira a huge hug.
Mira: We should get going before someone reports a couple of crazy nuns acting up on the beach.
Angie couldn't help laughing at Mira's witty comeback. She then tried to think if she ever seen Mira cry.
As they returned to the convent. Lucas came running to the van. He had started to think they wouldn't be coming back since they had already missed supper.
Sister Maria! Sister Maria! Lucas hollered as they got out of the van. Sister Claire caught up to him as he was trying to get Mira to join in on a game of baseball.
Sister Claire: Lucas! Sister Maria just might have other things to do besides playing ball.
Mira: That’s okay Sister Claire. Giving Lucas a pat on the head.
Looking at the redness around Angie's eyes Sister Claire asked her if she was okay.
Mira: Sister Annie's allergies flared up when we visited Senora Morales garden.
Angie couldn't get over how quick Mira was at covering for her. But she went along with it by saying, "Yes I will have to go and take an allergy pill. If you don't mind excusing me I think I will shower also."
Sister Claire: There is some supper held over for when you feel up to it.
Angie replied with a" thank you maybe later" and headed for the guestroom.
Sister Claire: How about you Sister Maria would you like something to eat?
Mira: I'm not too hungry at the moment. Maybe my appetite will pick up after a short game of baseball.
"You can be first at bat!" Lucas cried out cheerfully.
Sister Claire was delighted to see Lucas so happy playing with Sister Maria. She was certainly bringing the light out in him. Just as she started to wonder what would happen to him when Sister Maria left, a jeep tearing up the driveway caught her attention. She could hardly believe her eyes when she seen Senora Morales behind the wheel. Mira came running over to her to see what was going on.
Sister Claire: I don't believe my eyes its Senora Morales she never goes off the compound alone. Oh my! Senor Morales.
Mira budding in "What about Senor Morales?"
Sister Claire: He must be dead!
Mira: How do you know that?
Sister Claire: That’s the only reason there can be for Senora Morales to be unescorted.
Angie's mother headed in their direction first thing and immediately asked for Sister Annie.
Sister Claire: She is in the guestroom. Looking very puzzled.
Mira could hardly keep up with Angie's mother as she strode towards the guestroom.
Meanwhile when Mira stayed out to play ball Angie had taken out the brown contacts she was wearing to have her shower. She had forgotten all about the rinse in her hair that washed out as she showered. She was distracted about if and when her mother would get in touch. When she did notice the rinse she figured it was no big deal. As it was most likely that no one would want to see her out of the habit now anyhow.
After combing her hair and dressing in a tank top and shorts Angie opened the door to bathroom just as her mother and Mira entered the room.
Angie's mothers eye swelled with tears as she said. "Angela!"
Angie could hardly believe what was happening when she answered in an almost non-coherent voice. "Mother"
Angie's Mother: Its really you! You do have blue eyes!
As Angie's mother reached out and hugged her Mira broke out in tears even though it was out of character for her. Mira just couldn't hold back the moment was just too touching.
"Yes…Yes I do." Angie replied as looked with her own teary eyes at her mother then towards Mira.
Mira: Finally I was beginning to think this wasn't going to happen!
Angie's mother looked curiously at the two.
Angie shook her head and smiled as told her mother. "This is my friend Mira. And she does cry.
Mira: I think you two could use some time alone to catch up.
Angie eyes still spilled tears of happiness as she said. "Thank you Mira I owe you big time."
Angie's Mother: Thank you so much for helping my daughter.
Mira: Believe me seeing you two together makes it all worth it. Now I have a very special guy waiting to talk to along with Sister Claire.
When Mira left Angie and her mother turned to one another to hug again.
Angie's mother held on tightly as she said, "I thought you were dead."
Angie: I know but we did make it to the states.
Angie's Mother: We? Your father is alive too?
Angie looked longingly in her mother eyes while biting her lip. Then she said a soft voice; " Dad died a while back in an accident on the set of a movie."
The pain in her mother's eyes was very clear when she replied, "Oh God why? You know I never stopped loving him… I'm so thank full to have you back…. Oh! Angela you're so beautiful, I can't believe that you are here"
Angie: What about you? How did you get off the compound?
Angie's Mother: Senor Morales is dead.
Angie's Mother felt her daughter flinch as Senor Morales name was mentioned so she began to explain about how Senor Morales destroyed her family and how she hated him so much for being so cruel and selvefish. When Morales told her that her husband and daughter had drowned at sea she had wished him dead and wanted to die herself even though she was pregnant. All the tragedy ate away at her so much that she almost lost Selena. It wasn't long after she had wished him dead that he was injured and his two most prized sons where killed. It seemed to be a just thing to happen but she felt guilty even though she knew his loss was like and eye for an eye. As time went by Senor Morales came back from the brink of death but remained in a wheelchair. He was the most hateful thing in the world until Selena softened him up with her all her charm and they somehow formed a bond.
As Selena grew up she was tempted to tell her the truth but she knew that truth would only make Selena's life a miserable one. She didn't want her to have to grow up with so much hatred. Senor Morales allowing her to teach and help others made life at the compound easier to cope with. It was hard always being watched but there was a fear for their safety from all of Senor Morales enemies of the past. They even tried getting to her once before by using the same ploy about her daughter being alive.
As Angie's mother finished her story she asked: So how did you know it was me?
Angie's Mother: I didn't know what to think at first when I saw your chin it was identical to your fathers and Selena's it made me wonder but I thought it was just wish full thinking so I just put it down to coincidence because your eyes were brown.
Angie: Contacts
Angie's Mother: I didn't know what to think when you typed that Angela was alive. Then when the guard came I wasn't sure whether it was another attempt by Senor Morales enemies or if it was true. I'm so sorry.
Angie: So what made you finally realize it was me?
Angie's Mother: Selena! She told me what you had said about F/X and it just hit me you were wearing contacts.
Angie was elated to hear what her mother had just said but then concern arose in Angie's voice as she asked, "What about Selena where is she?"
"She's fine she is still at the compound Rico would never harm her he isn't anything like his father was." Angie's mother answered.
It was a hard question to ask but Angie knew she had to. " Is she upset over Morales?"
Angie's mother looked at her the same way she had looked at Selena earlier that day so very proud when she said. " Selena will except it she knew he was getting sicker."
Angie: She is such a neat person! I can hardly believe I'm talking to you and that I have a younger sister.
Angie's Mother: Just wait until she hears about you! She already thinks your some kind of awesome for a nun….Just wait until she gets a look at you now.
Angie: I can hardly wait.
Angie's Mother: I know it will be difficult for you but do you think you and Mira could come back to the compound. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the church in the village. I don't expect you to go put I do want you as near to me as possible. We have so much to catch up on and our future to plan.
Angie realized that it would be a hard thing to do but she just didn't think she could stand being separated from her mother again so she answered, " I guess so."
Angie's Mother: I'm so sorry you had to deal with such a mess all your life. I can't believe how you turned out. I want to hear all about you…and your father.
Angie: He was so very proud of you so proud that he made you my hero. If only he was here.
Angie's Mother: That sounds like Manny. I'm sure he would be very proud of you also.
Angie: He never even knew about Selena.
Angie's Mother: No he didn't but you do now.
Angie: We should get going in case she needs you.
As Angie's mother swept the hair away from her daughters eyes she said "I'm so very proud of you your just as beautiful on the inside as out. There aren't to many people as brave and forgiving as you."
Angie: I had a hero to live up to….
Angie's Mother smiled as she said" We should go and explain things to Sister Claire. "
Angie and her mother then went to look for Sister Claire and unsurprisingly they found her in the library. She met them with a graceful smile and told them that Mira had explained everything and that she felt it was just the most wonderful thing.
Angie: Where is Mira?
Sister Claire: She is outside talking to Lucas. She wanted to explain things to him herself. Those two have formed a unique bond.
Angie: Would you excuse me I'll be right back.
Stepping away from her mother was hard but she owed Mira and so Angie ran quickly back to the guest room and grabbed her laptop, then headed out to find Mira and Lucas. When she found them Lucas looked pretty upset and Mira was talking to him in a very soft manor.
Mira: Hey everything okay?
Angie: Yeah they couldn't be better? Holding the laptop behind her.
Lucas: For you maybe but I'll never see Mira again.
Smiling Angie replied. "Of course you will and as often as you like."
Lucas: Sure, Sure, Do you really expect me to believe that.
Angie then brought the laptop from behind her back and handed it to Lucas and said, "You will by using this. You do know how to use one?"
Lucas: Wow my own computer! Yeah I do!
Mira patted Angie on the back and thanked her for coming up with such a great solution then turned to Lucas and said. "I'll be expecting an email at least once a day from you."
Lucas: You will!
Angie: Email that’s old stuff. I'll set you up in with your own visual and voice program.
Lucas: Really we will be able to see and talk to each other too!
"Yeah! Really! Really!" Angie exclaimed cheerfully.
Lucas placed the laptop on the picnic table and gave Angie a quick smile then turned to Mira and gave her a great big hug and a kiss on the check and said, "Thank you I'm going go show it to Sister Claire."
Mira: That's pretty thoughtful of you.
Angie: It's the least I could do after all you have done for me.
Mira: So how did things go?
Angie: Perfect! Wonderful! I still can't believe it finally happened. Lets get going!
Mira: You know patience still isn't going to be one of your best virtues.
Angie: Your right lets get going?
Mira: Where are we going?
Angie: Back with my mother to the compound.
Mira: Are you sure about that.
Angie: It won't be easy but Morales is dead now and I want to be with my family…. Selena doesn't know yet.
Mira: This should be interesting.
