Chapter 9 To Tell Or Not To Tell
Just as they were finishing their lunch Mira commented "
I still can't get over how beautiful it is here, Sister Claire told us you are quite the gardener."
Angie's Mother: Senor Morales is pretty played out from all the commotion of last night I'm sure it will be a long time before he wakes from his nap. Maybe I could show you around the garden while Selena shows Sister Annie her computer. Before we go down to the school.
Mira: I'd love a tour.
"Are you ready to go now?" Selena asked Angie.
Angie: Sure thing.
Angie's Mother: Remember to mind your manners Selena.
Selena: Sure Mom.
Angie and Selena then headed up the walkway to the mansion. Angie hoped that they wouldn't run into Senor Morales. She wasn't too set on being separated from Mira but she didn't want to let Selena down.
Selena: Thanks for agreeing to see my computer.
Angie: I'm glad you invited me.
The inside of the mansion was just as breathtaking as the outside. Even though it was hard to take in the entire splendor all at once the camera's where still easy to spot.
The two sisters went up a set of spiral stairs to the second floor where Selena's room was just down the corridor. Angie was stunned when she entered her sister's room it was so familiar to how she always dreamed about having herself when she was younger.
A huge canopy bed with light pink satin bedding empowered the room. She was glad to see some boy band posters on the wall. The vanity dresser was filled with lotions and perfumes and there was a photo of Angie's mother and Selena, so Angie thought but as she got closer she realized it was herself. She had never seen the photo before.
Selena noticing Angie looking at the picture went over to the bathroom door and opened it she then reached up to pull a wire from the camera overhead shutting the door with a hand behind her back at the same time. She then re-entered the room.
Selena: You'll have to be standing in the same spot when I turn it back on.
Angie was in total awe of her little sister's actions as she thought this girl had potential.
Angie: You're pretty smart to figure that one out.
Selena: It's out of desperation, I can't stand be watched 24/7 so I spend a lot of time in the bathroom, so they think.
Angie: Who are they?
Selena: My stepfather's security.
Angie: What is he scared off.
Selena: There are people who blame him for an uprising just before I was born. It seems it wasn't enough that he ended up in wheelchair and lost two sons.
Angie: Does he have any other children?
Selena: Yes his oldest son Rico he is a doctor in Florida. I guess he didn't want to be a soldier like the other two. He's the one who gave me the computer. He's the best big brother in the world.
Angie turned and looked closer at the picture of her and her mother trying to absorb what Selena had just said. Noticing Selena told her it was a photo of mother and sister.
Angie: You have a sister?
Selena: My sister Angela died along with my father before I was born. They drowned trying to leave Cuba just before my stepfather was hurt and his son's were killed.
Angie: That’s very tragic.
Selena: I wish things could have been different my real father was in the movie business. Just imagine how exciting that would be.
Angie: Yeah F/X can be exciting.
Selena: I would have loved having my sister around. She looks like me don't you think?
Relieved that Selena didn't catch on to what she had said earlier Angie replied. "Yeah she does."
Selena: My mother say's I'm a lot like her, but sometimes I wonder if I measure up.
Forgetting herself again Angie answered. "I know you do."
Selena: How would you know that?
Angie knew right then and there that she would no longer be able to hold any contempt for her younger sister but she was still wasn't sure that it was the right time or place to tell her the truth. She wasn't sure how she would handle it with her spunky attitude. It could be way too dangerous. But much to her own surprise her heart ached to tell her little sister the truth.
Angie: Just spending this little time with you I can tell your pretty special quite unique really.
Selena: Really?
Angie: Yeah Really! Now how about that computer of yours.
Selena: Just stay there until I turn the camera back on. With you here they will wonder why I took so long in the bathroom.
Angie beamed with pride at her sister's intelligence as she said "Sure."
As Selena walked towards the computer she told Angie. " You just missed Rico last night, it's too bad you’re a nun I think you two would head it off."
Angie burst into laughter then asked, " Does that mind of yours ever stop spinning?"
Selena: You sound like my mother.
The two then delved into the world of computers. Angie was impressed with Rico's choice of hardware. A while after explaining some basic pointers to Selena, who unsurprisingly turned out to be a quick study, Mira and her Mother showed to see if Angie was ready to go down to the school.
Angie's Mother: I see you have gotten Selena off to a good start.
Angie: She's a natural. It didn't take much for her to catch on.
Angie's Mother: I just hope I'll be able to catch on as easy.
Angie: I'm sure you will be surprised at what you can learn.
Selena was having a great time on the computer and asked to stay behind.
Angie's Mother: I should check on Senor Morales I'll have a guard take me in just minute. I'll arrange for the school door to be opened for you.
Angie hadn't even thought about telling her mother in the van until then. She wasn't too impressed about having to wait for her mother to check on Morales
Angie's Mother: I'll just be a minute.
Mira: Okay sure it's no problem.
As Mira steered down the hill she asked Angie how she had made out with Selena.
Angie: I didn't tell her who I was….She thinks my father and I drowned leaving the island. I'll tell you more about our visit later. She's a really neat kid…Naturally smart.
Mira: It must run in the family. Your mother is quite the lady.
Angie: Thanks Mira…. Thanks for everything.
Mira: Its going to be worth it just to see your mother's face when she finds out who you really are.
Angie: It shouldn't be long now. I hope she gets here soon.
No sooner than Angie got the words out a jeep with Angie's mother as a passenger pulled up beside them.
They met up with Angie's mother once and again and continued on to the library. Angie didn't know if she was more nervous or more excited with each step. As they sat down behind the computers Mira noticed the anticipation rearing in Angie as she was biting at her bottom lip.
Angie's Mother: I'm glad I can type at least I'm that far ahead of the game.
Angie looked at her mother in way that made her curious when she said " Please don't worry you have nothing to be scared of."
Even though Angie was trying to prepare her mother she wasn't quite as prepared to make the next step as she had thought her heart said type its me Angela but her fingers typed Angela is Alive instead.
Angie's mother looked at her with a look that was so deep that it cut right through Angie. Mira was even taken aback when Angie's mother became so scared looking.
Just as Angie was about to type more a guard came bursting in the door. Mira looked at Angie in horror as she figured they had been found out. The guard then told Angie's mother in a very alarmed voice that Senor Rico had sent him to tell her that Senor Morales needed to see her right away and she would have to get back quickly.
"I need to go. I will be in touch." Said Angie's mother in a panicked voice as she turned and left.
Watching her mother leave so quickly made Angie's heart sink she sat in shock of what had just happened.
Mira: We should go back to the convent.
Angie: Yeah, I guess so.
