Chapter 2 Preparing for a Cuban Adventure
Angie dressed quickly after her shower and headed towards the fresh aroma of the Java brewing in her kitchenette.
Resisting the temptation to tune in the local news as she gazed out her window. Everything looked the same as always, quite the contrast to how Angie felt about her life.
It was hard to believe all that had happened the past few days. The thought of facing Rollie was making her feel very apprehensive. She had only told him in the ambulance the night before that things hadn't changed so she could save face and make things easier for him.
Buzzing the intercom this time, Mira stirred Angie out the train of thought she was in.
Mira: Good Morning Angie
Angie: I'm not sure how good it is, but its here.
Mira: Pointing at Angie's cup "That stuff will kill ya!
Got another cup?"
Angie: Smiling "Sure "
Mira: Thanks
Mira: So Rollie's doing fine, according to Francis.
Angie: That's good ... ... Glad to hear it.
Mira was puzzled at Angie's response she had thought for sure Angie would have called the hospital herself already.
Mira: Do you mind if I use your phone. I want to check some messages before we leave.
Angie: Help yourself. I need to make a trip to the powder room anyway.
Mira got the message she had hoped for but decided to wait, and tell Angie about it later she thought Angie looked a bit distraught at the moment.
Mira: Well we should get going.
Angie: Okay
The ride to the hospital was a quiet one as Angie tried to hide her uneasiness about facing Rollie. She didn't want him feeling sorry for her, or to put him through anymore than she had.
Angie couldn't help but think of how protective she and Rollie were of one another. Somehow she had to find strength in knowing there was a bond between them that could never be broken. But nearer the hospital the more anxious she got.
Mira seeing how quiet Angie was decided to give her some space by not asking any questions.
Just as Mira put the car in park Angie blurted out " I can't face him right now!"
Mira: Take it easy Angie, you don't have to anything you don't want to.
Angie: I've made such a mess of things!
Mira: Your not to blame, If anyone is to blame it is Loubar! Angie: I should of known better about Rollie.
Mira: You and Rollie where both victims of that scum!
Mira: You know Angie you can wait here and I will just pop in on Rollie myself and give him a message if you want.
Angie: Sounds good to me just tell him to get better and I'll see him when I get back.
Mira: Back, Where ya going?
Angie: I'm not sure yet, all I know is I need a break from here.
Mira: We will talk about that very thing as soon as I finish checking in on Rollie. (Now Mira thought to herself this could just make things easier in getting Angie to go along with her.)
Mira: Stay right here for now, we still need to get your statement.
Stay there she would, Angie was so relieved that Mira was handling things for her, that she just decided to lean back and relax in the comfort of Mira's Intrepid and take in the scenery.
Mira entered Rollie's hospital room and immediately took note of how even at his lowest Rollie still managed to look good.
Rollie: Have you heard from Angie, I tried her apartment and the loft. Panic was showing in his voice.
Mira: Angie's outside in my car, She's not quite up to visiting you just yet.
Rollie looked confused
Mira: She told me to tell you to get better!
Rollie swallowed hard, as he thought to himself that Angie must be going through hell! If only he had of protected her better things wouldn't be so bad.
Rollie: Is she okay?
Mira: She is having a hard time dealing with things right now and needs some space.
Rollie: I hope she can forgive me for letting things get so out of control.
Mira: Rollie its not your fault, like I said to Angie, you where both victims of Loubar.
Rollie: It's a good thing he is dead, I just wish it were me who killed him for what he did to Angie!
Mira: It's time to put Loubar behind you and concentrate on getting better. (Pointing at Rollie's shoulder.)
Rollie: The doc says I'll be able to travel in a couple of days, I've been thinking maybe its time to take that trip back home, but I can't leave Angie until I know she will be all right.
Mira: Actually Angie is thinking the same thing.
Rollie: What do ya mean?
Mira: She's looking to take a break from here too.
Rollie: Did she say where? Concern raising in his voice.
Mira: She didn't say where, I thought maybe, I would try to get her to go on a trip to Florida… Believe me we all need a vacation.
Rollie: Sounds like a good idea, I really appreciate your taking care of Angie.
Mira: Angie will be okay, she's a survivor.
Mira wasn't about to tell Rollie what she was up to, she figured he might not be too receptive about the idea.
Mira: After all you two have done for the department it’s the least I can do, besides I could use some warm weather too.
Rollie: Thanks Mira
Mira: No problem, just get better okay and keep in touch!
Rollie: You know I will, Tell Angie to have a great time and I will be thinking of her, or ah… We will be back to making movies in no time.
Mira: Sure (Meanwhile thinking to herself that Angie and Rollie both needed time to heal from pain of everything that had happened.)
As Mira headed back to the parking lot, she felt even more determined about helping Angie. After all she was familiar with what it was like to not be able to have contact with a loved one.
Meanwhile while waiting Angie was curious to what Mira wanted to talk about but soon became engulfed in watching a little girl and her mother playing in the adjacent park. Oh how she missed out on having her own mother around.
Mira opening the car door startled Angie.
Angie: How is he?
Mira: Better than I expected. He is really concerned about you!
Angie bit at the corner of her bottom lip as she waited to hear the rest.
Mira: I told him you where thinking of taking a break away from here.
Angie: So…What did he say about it?
Mira: He thought it was a good idea and that you could both use a vacation.
Angie: Just like Roll, always being the concerned big brother type.
Mira: That’s him all right!
Angie: So he's going back home.
Mira: How did you know?
Angie: Some things are just easy to figure out when it comes to Rollie…. Makes ya kind of wonder how I could be so stupid about every thing else…. Now I don't know where I belong in his life. (Angie slapped her hand on her leg)
Mira: There goes that stupid word again!!! Stop being so hard on yourself, Rollie said that you guy's would be back making movies in no time.
Angie: Well I guess that answers my question. (Angie then banged her fist on her leg.)
Mira sensed from Angie's actions that she needed a distraction from the current conversation so she decided this would be a good time mention her plan.
Mira: You know I could use a vacation too.
Angie: Surprised at what Mira just said." Are you sure the department can let you have one?
Mira felt the sarcasm in Angie's voice and replied "Maybe a working vacation. …. But as little work as possible."
Angie: Oh Sure! (Angie wasn't quite sure what Mira was leading up to, but decided to go along with the conversation.)
Mira: How would you feel about taking a trip some place warm.
Angie: Warm sounds good. So, where do you have in mind?
Mira: Ever heard of place called Calle Ocho,
Angie tilted her head in a questioning way.
Mira: Little Havana (smiling mischievously)
Clueing in to what Mira was getting at, Angie couldn't help showing her awe over her friend's response with one of her huge knowing grins.
Angie: Yeah its in Florida, isn't it also known as Little Cuba?
