Chapter Twenty One
"Hmm, Rollie, huh?" A sly smile turned up the corners of Alex's mouth. "Is that R A...?"
"R O," Rollie corrected, "as in short for Roland." He grimaced. "And please don't call me that. I hate it."
Alex made a face, then grinned crookedly. "So, how did you end up named Roland?"
"Why not ask the man responsible? Dad!" Rollie turned his gaze on his father.
Dingo Tyler squirmed ever so slightly, so slightly that only someone who knew him well would realize it. "Well, Rollie's mum liked..."
"Dad," Rollie said, his voice full of warning. "Struth!"
"Uh..."
"Mum told me." Rollie caught his father's light blue eyes and held them firmly, his rich brown eyes full of warning.
Dingo paled and looked down at his feet. He mumbled something that not even Mangela, who was standing right next to him, could hear.
With everyone else in the room watching them, full of curiosity, Rollie grinned wickedly. "A little louder, Dad. We can't hear you!"
"I lost a bet."
Alex stared at the Australian blankly for a second. "He lost a bet? You got stuck, er, named Roland because your father lost a bet?!"
"I didn't know that," Angie spoke up, looking at Rollie in mild surprise. "Thinking about it, I'm not surprised though. Only you, Dingo." She shook her head at the thought.
"Your mum really told you?" Dingo asked his son, sheepishly.
"Yeah, she did. First time I asked her about it. Roland isn't exactly a common Aussie name, Dad. And it's German, not Scots or English, so I got curious and asked. Mum always was up front with me, so naturally she told me all about that bet."
"When was that, Rollie?" Mangela asked, curious.
"Oh, I think I was all of five at the time, Mangela."
Mangela caught the startled expressions on everyone's faces, including Dingo's. His eyes met Daniel's and Angie's who were filled with amusement. They burst out laughing at the thought of a five year old researching his given name and having a serious discussion with his mother about it--only Rollie. Rollie grinned as he remembered the conspiracy he'd entered into on that day. His mother had made him promise not to tell his father that he knew, at least not until he needed the ammunition for a good cause. It was a secret he had kept, even from Mangela, Manny and Angie until this moment. He figured breaking the tension was a good enough cause and his mother would approve. Others joined in with the laughter while Dingo muttered to himself, shaking his head and wondered which of his other secrets Rollie actually knew. His wife had obviously been more forthright with their son than he had been. Should I tell them the rest of it? He considered his father for a moment. A spark of wicked glee flashed in his eyes. Nah. Save it for another day. I can always use more ammo when it comes to Dingo! And he really should have read my birth certificate. The 'game' had started a long time ago, a conspiracy between mother and son that Rollie had seen no need to end... yet.
"Will you be all right on your own while I check out Angie's findings, Daniel?"
Daniel's eyes had returned to Alex's. "Huh? Did you say something Rollie?"
"That's about what I thought", Rollie muttered to himself. "Come on, Ange, I want to review this stuff. I think Daniel will be sufficiently distracted for awhile."
"And Alex will keep a very good eye on him", Angie added as the couple left the bar.
"Plus Nub and Father Mac can explain the Christmas program to him."
Mangela trailed along behind them, pulling Dingo along with him. Callie bounced once and rushed to Rollie's other side. Kevin looked at Molly. She nodded ever so slightly and he hurried to catch up with them.
The group paused at the top of the steps outside. "Your office, Kevin?" Rollie asked the policeman.
"Works for me, uh, Rollie." Kevin shivered at the surreal feeling of the moment.
"I can get to work on finding who we might have to help us in DC, Rol." Angie glanced at Callie, wondering if the reporter would want to join her or the 'boys'.
"That can wait a little bit longer, luv. I think there are a few details we still need to work out."
Kevin flipped on the lights and automatically went to sit behind his desk. He froze before he could actually sit down. Seeing Rollie lean against a corner of the desk, he finished the motion. "So, what details?" the cop inquired, thoughtfully.
"Things like the evidence Angie found on that disk", Rollie answered. "I think we should leave it with Kevin. Just in case." He watched the blonde carefully. He didn't want to upset the love of his life, but he also felt a profound need to be careful -- Very, very careful.
Angie considered it for a moment. "Okay. I can understand that, but how do we get somebody else to listen to us? We're going to need proof, even with Elena or Marty. They're going to need more than just our say-so, boss."
"Copies?" Callie looked at the others. "Would a copy be good enough as evidence for your friends?"
"Well, Angie could fake just about anything on a computer," Rollie began, only to jump as his partner poked him in the side. "But the people who are aware of that tidbit, also know she wouldn't. Not like this. Good suggestion, Callie."
"Okay. I'll need some blanks, but I can get those tomorrow."
"On Christmas Eve? I don't envy you that shopping trip, Ange." Rollie smirked. "I guess I will get some practice in with Daniel and Nub while you brave the crowds."
"I'll go with you, Angie!" The brunette went to stand beside the blonde.
"Ha! And guys think they're brave," Angie teased, then sobered. "Okay, we make a copy. What else?"
"How about the things we need for our disguises? Can you get those tomorrow too?" The Aussie looked at Angie with what she called his 'puppy dog eyes'. She never could resist that look. She sighed deeply, before nodding with a resigned look.
"Maybe we should give the evidence to somebody else, Rollie?" Kevin looked at the others. "Not that I couldn't handle it, but they know about Hope. They might come back and find it."
Everyone looked at each other. "Nobody knows we took that thing, Rollie. I swear it!" Dingo protested.
His son nodded thoughtfully. "And what they don't know about, they won't look for..."
"How about making extra copies? Send them to someone you trust," Mangela suggested.
"Extra copies might not be a bad idea," Angie agreed.
"But who can we send it to that They won't be watching?" Rollie looked at each one of them. "They know we know. They probably expect us to contact our friends, Angie. Mira and Francis, even Elena or Marty. Who won't they be watching?"
"I don't know." Angie and Rollie thought about it, the others waiting impatiently.
"It has to be somebody we can trust, but that they won't expect us to contact," Rollie muttered.
"Colleen!" Angie almost jumped as she thought of the woman. Colleen O'Malley had been Leo McCarthy's girl friend. The relationship had been off as much as it was on, but she had cared deeply for the deceased detective who had been one of Rollie's closest and best friends.
"Brilliant, Angie! Nobody would think we would contact her."
"And since she works at the precinct, she can get the evidence to Mira and Francis without anyone thinking anything about it." Angie smiled smugly.
"No."
"No?" Angie looked Rollie in bewilderment.
"I think it would be better if she took it to Van Duran. He'll know how to handle it and won't take any chances. This has to be handled with care." Rollie nodded in satisfaction with the decision. "Mangela, you're going to have to keep aware of any strangers on Hope. If anybody comes that someone on the island doesn't already know, Kevin needs to be told immediately."
"And what do I do about it?" Kevin asked, feeling a bit overwhelmed. "We have actually had a few strangers visit around the holidays, Rollie."
"Yeah. Keep an eye on them. Dingo and Mangela can help you with that. Hopefully without them finding out they're being watched. If they act suspiciously..." Rollie shook his head. "You'll have to use your own judgement, Kevin. I can't tell you what to do. But if They do come back, we can't let them cause more trouble."
"Can't have them find out you and Angie aren't here either," the cop pointed out.
"I wonder if Daniel can manage to be me." Rollie quipped.
"Why not?" Mangela nodded. "We just have to sneak him a bit so it looks like he's in two places. Leave it to us, Rollie. They'll never suspect a thing."
"What about Angie? She doesn't have a twin on the island." Callie looked at the others.
"No, but with a wig and a little makeup..." Rollie looked at Angie, silently asking her opinion.
"If you can find somebody similar, with the same height and build... It might work, Rollie. We can't do a full mask, but..."
"If they see her with Ailene, they'll think she is you."
"Yeah. I don't like using Ailene like that, but..." She chewed her lower lip, troubled.
"We'll keep a close watch on her, Angie, luv. No one will touch your baby girl," Mangela pledged solemnly. If they tried, they were going to regret it. He didn't care what Rollie thought about that.
Angie smiled gratefully at the aborigine. She had no doubt that he meant just what he said. "Anything else?"
"Guess we just need to decide on names for our new personas. Work out the disguises we're going to use." Rollie looked at his hands. "I really wish we could do full masks. It would be so much easier."
"Well, we can't so we do it the old fashioned way." Angie smirked slightly. "What's the matter, Tyler? Out of practice?"
"After the way Manny drilled that into my head? No worries. I can handle it. So, you remember what we need?"
"Yeah, I sure do", Angie shot back. "And with Callie's help, anybody who might be looking for one of us will never know about it."
"Then I guess that's all we can do for now. Are you going to check on Elena and Marty now?"
Angie nodded. "I'd like to get that done. The longer we wait, the more traps They might lay out for me. Not that they can catch me, but no reason to delay."
"Can I watch?" Callie asked, fascinated by Angie's skill on the computer.
"Sure. I don't mind an audience, Callie. What about you, Rol?"
"I think I'll go make sure Daniel is doing all right. I don't want him overwhelmed on his first real day." The Aussie laughed softly. "And maybe we can work in a rehearsal. I think it might help. Daniel loves music."
"Good enough. See you for dinner?" Angie asked, her blue eyes bright with her love and affection for the tall, slender man.
"It's a date," Rollie agreed, leaning forward to wrap his hands around her waist. He pulled her closer and tenderly kissed her lips.
Kevin looked at Callie as the couple's kiss deepened in passion. He wondered if he and Molly had been that bad before they got engaged. He grinned. He knew they were that bad now. "Right. Well, I have a patrol to do. Care to join me, Mister Mangela, Mister Tyler? I can show you the island."
"Just Mangela, Kevin." The aboriginal looked slyly at his old friend. "And Dingo is always Dingo. Never heard him called Mister Tyler before. I don't think he'd know it was him." The two men laughed as Dingo sputtered in protest, heading out the door. Dingo looked back curiously, at his son and Angie. Who knew they had it in them? "Come on, Dingo!" Mangela hissed, grabbing his coat and pulling hard.
"I'll just go get the computer warmed up," Callie said to the air and followed the men out the door. She wasn't sure if they'd heard her, but they had to come up for air sometime. Angie knew where to find her. She fanned her face as she stepped out into the cold air. Ministers weren't suppose to know how to kiss like that!
