Chapter Sixteen

Daniel looked on, very confused as Rollie continued staring at Mangela and Dingo. His twin was obviously upset. The once friendly room was now full of tension. Daniel shivered beneath the weight of it. Reacting to the uneasy feeling from his twin, the Aussie turned away and hugged the American. Daniel leaned into the hug, absorbing the warmth he felt from Rollie. Suddenly feeling shy, he hid his face against Rollie's shoulder, then tried to pull out of the welcoming embrace. For a moment, Rollie continued to hug him tightly, then let him go. He smiled wryly at his twin, then it softened, warmed. Daniel felt his own smile tug at his lips as he had to return it.

Deciding to ignore the question of right and wrong, of justice and vigilantism for now, Rollie turned to Angie. "Think you can find anything on that 'disk thingie', luv?"

"Sure thing, boss, as long as I have that format." She shrugged slightly. "If I don't have it and Callie doesn't either, I'll go to the mainland and pick up a new drive."

Rollie leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Thanks, Angie. I don't know how I'll repay you, but I'll think of something." His grin was slightly crooked as he recalled the tiny budget the church possessed. He really needed to pay more attention to that! He couldn't believe how much he'd 'forgotten' or ignored when he thought he was Daniel Cooper.

"You don't owe me a thing, Rollie Tyler and you know it." Angie humphed, then smiled slightly. "Doctor Watson wanted to check both of you out when you woke up. I'll give her a ring, then we will check out that disk. Won't we, Dingo? Mangela?"

"Sure thing, Angie girl." Mangela responded promptly. He had felt uneasy when Rollie had stared at him like that. It had felt like... Well, like something had been getting ready to pounce. No, he hadn't liked that feeling one little bit and was grateful when his sonny boy had been distracted.

"All right, Angie." Rollie agreed easily enough. "Try and keep them out of trouble while you're at it. I know it's a hard task, luv, but Hope Island is a peaceful, law abiding place. I don't want to find out there's been any trouble." He looked pointedly at the two older men who squirmed like little boys caught in some mischief.

Angie left with Mangela and Dingo in tow, leaving the twins alone together.

Rollie looked at Daniel who seemed to be looking at the bedspread in fascination. "Are you all right?"

Daniel looked up startled, his eyes wide. "Fine, I'm fine."

"Let's get cleaned up before Doc Watson gets here. You use the bathroom first." Rollie gently nudged Daniel off the bed and toward the bathroom. After the door closed, he checked his drawers and closet, finding a clean pair of jeans and a flannel shirt for Daniel to wear. He sighed as he checked his underwear, wishing he had a new pack. No one liked using someone else's underwear and he was positive Daniel wouldn't appreciate being 'au natural' under his clothes. He burrowed deeper, hoping against hope, and was pleased when he found an unopened package of boxers. He remembered them now. Stella had given them to him. They were made out of silk and he had never wanted to wear them. While his younger twin would probably be embarrassed by the material, they were better than nothing. Rollie made a mental note that he'd have to take Daniel shopping for clothes on the mainland. They could, and probably would, share everything except their underwear. He pulled out a pair of socks and knocking softly on the door, placed the clothes just inside. "Here are some clean clothes, Daniel."

"Thank you, Rollie," Daniel spoke over the shower. He finished quickly. Toweling off, he examined the clothes Rollie had left him. He flushed slightly at the underwear, but slipped them on gratefully. He slipped out the door on bare feet. "You're turn," Daniel called softly to his twin.

Rollie turned slowly from where he was looking out past the deck to the bay beyond. "Thanks." He smiled as he walked past his twin, his own clothes in his arms.

Drawn to the view that Rollie had been looking at, Daniel padded over to the window. He stood there, just absorbing the sun and the view, appreciating God's work. He could not remember when he had last seen nature at its finest, when he could just stand and look at the beauty of God's handiwork. He sighed softly and a single tear threaded its way down his cheek.

Rollie came out of the bathroom to find Daniel huddled in on himself, sobbing. He leapt to his twin's side and pulled him into a warm embrace. He crooned softly into the grief-stricken man's ear. "It's alright. Let it all out. Let it out, Daniel. Shh. Shh. Shh.God knows. He knows. You're not alone. Let it out, Daniel. Let it out."

A few moments later, Daniel's sobs eased and he wiped the tears from his face. "Sorry," he apologized softly, "I don't know what came over me."

Rollie looked at him with deep compassion. He had a feeling he knew exactly what had come over his twin. However, knowing Daniel would be embarrassed if he pushed, he sought something to distract him. "Do you want to see the church?"

Daniel's face immediately lit up with his interest and eagerness. "Yes!"

"All right then, let's take a look." Rollie tugged Daniel toward the door, leading him to the church. Once inside, he stood to one side observing as Daniel examined the tiny church. A deep silence filled the church as Daniel went to his knees in front of the altar. His head bowed and Rollie stepped outside. closing the doors gently to give the young minister privacy to commune with God. How long? How long had it been since Daniel had dared to open himself up? How long had They been watching his every move? Rollie leaned back against the doors of his church and looked up into the unusually blue winter sky. "Thanks for looking out for him." The Aussie closed his eyes and shivered in the chill of the morning air. Coats! He needed to find a coat for Daniel to wear and one for himself too. He straightened up and gave himself a shake, turning to the parish house to do just that when Doctor Watson drove up. "G'day, Doc," Rollie called out.

"Good morning, Rollie. How do you feel?"

"Fine. A bit strange, but things seem to be settling into place now." Rollie answered truthfully.

"Do you have a headache?" Doctor Watson reached up to brush his hair away from the bruise behind his ear.

"Bit of one. Not too bad though. Certainly not like when the memories broke out."

"Good. That's good. What about Daniel?" Doctor Watson looked up and frowned at the expression on Rollie's face.

"He had a rough go of it, Doc." Rollie glanced at the church where he'd left Daniel. "We'll have to watch out for him until he finds his path again."

"His path?"

"They stole his path from him. He's .... Well, he's off balance. Daniel hasn't had a chance to grieve. He's been alone too much and they were probably watching his every moment. No privacy, no friends, no..." Rollie shook his head. He looked down at the doctor, his eyes full of sadness. "We have to help him now, let him know he's not alone, that someone cares."

"Yes, I guess we do. I want to give you and him a quick exam..." She trailed off at the look in Rollie's eyes.

"Not right now, Doc. Right now," Rollie took a deep breath, "right now, Daniel is getting the best help there is for him." He glanced at the church, a warm gentle smile touching his face.

"I ... see. All right, Rollie. It can wait for awhile." Doctor Watson followed the Australian to the parish house. Giving him a quick once over, she was pleased to find his vitals were normal. She watched as Rollie rummaged through his closet, pulling out two coats. He shrugged into his black leather coat, the sole remaining piece of Rollie Tyler's life. He was surprised that he'd been allowed to keep it. Carrying his brown coat, he walked back to the church.

"You both need to eat something." Doctor Watson spoke softly.

"Yeah. Yeah, guess we do. How about a lift? We can grab a bite at the Widow's Walk." Rollie responded.

"Is that wise?"

"Does it matter anymore? All of Hope knows I have a twin by now. I won't hide him, Doc, and I won't lie to them anymore either." Rollie's eyes flashed with something undeniable as he caught and held her eyes. "Part of it's already out. Might as well let out the rest." He shrugged. "Maybe it will make them think twice about coming back to Hope."

"About hurting Daniel?"

"Yeah, about hurting Daniel or anybody else. The more people who know, the harder it will be for them to hide their actions."

"I hope you're right, Rollie."

"Me too." Rollie looked at the doors of the church. Please let it be right, God! He opened one door and stepped inside.

"It's a beautiful church, Rollie." Daniel stood and turned to face his twin. "It's so peaceful here. I... Some would say she's too small, but... She feels... just right."

"Yeah, she is. You should have seen her when I got here though. She needed a lot of work. Still does, but ... She's beautiful." He held out the coat toward his twin. "Come on, let's get a bite to eat. I'll introduce you to Hope Island. There isn't anywhere else quite like her either!"
