Soul Mates
By Kimber
Angie blushed, sitting back down on the couch. "I I'm just working early, that's all."
Rollie sensed the defensiveness in her voice. "Okay," he said, getting up. "I just asked."
"Okay, good." Angie replied.
He lingered a moment longer than he should have, and she sensed it. He looked down at her, and began to speak. "Ang I wanted to know something. I "
"Yeah?" She asked, looking up to meet his eyes.
"Well, uh you want some tea or something now that you're here?" Her face fell. "Oh, yeah, sure."
He walked away from her and down into he studio. She could hear him banging around downstairs, heard him plug the kettle in.
She lay down on the couch, and closed her eyes. How
could she tell him what she felt! It just wasn't as easy as
what Kit had suggested. She couldn't just tell him the way
she felt about him. She knew what he'd do. Take her by the
shoulders, and sit her down. Then he would slowly
say that they'd been friends for years, and that her Dad was
Rollie's best mate, and that it would never work out.
Angie shook her head. She felt a few tears slip down her cheek. No, she couldn't let him humiliate her like that. She just couldn't.
Downstairs
Rollie poured the boiling water out of the kettle. He couldn't tell Angie how he felt over her! He couldn't tell her of the all times he'd wanted to tell her, to hold her, to kiss her.
He made his way up to the loft, shaking his head as he went., He knew what she would do. She would give him one of her famous "Angie Skeptical Looks." She would think he was sick for thinking those kinds of thoughts, for thinking that they could be together.
"My father was your best friend!" She would say, pointing out how she had been barely eleven years old when they had met.
No, he thought, spotting Angie on the couch. He couldn't let her humiliate him like that. He just couldn't.
Angie heard Rollie come in, and she sat up, frantically wiping the tears from her face.
"Hey, the tea ready?"
"Yup," he answered. "Lots of sugar, the way I like it."
"Great."
Rollie noticed the change of tone in her voice, and turned to face her. He sat on the couch, and peered at her. "Ang, are you crying?"
"Nah," she muttered, lowering her head.
"Ang " He lifted her face up with his hand, and used the other to stroke her hair. "Is it something I've done?"
Angie shook her head. "No Rollie, it's just just nothing." She began to cry harder.
He pulled her head to his chest, and rested his chin on her. "I'm sorry if I've done something wrong "
"It's not something you've done!" Angie cried, burying her face into his shirtfront. "It's something you haven't done."
"Haven't done? Oh, Angie, what haven't I done? Fed your cat? Helped you prepare your stuff?"
"Love me," She murmured. "You haven't loved me." She said, slowly.
"First Thaia, and then Danni. Now Mira. Where do I fit in? Or do I."
He pulled himself away, forcing Angie to pull her head away from him.
She was staring at him now, her clear blue eyes shimmering with tears.
"Oh, Angie. You're the top of my list! You come before Danni and Thaia and Mira. Well, Mira's just a friend." He realized what she was getting at, and began to feel his nerves work overtime.
"Am I just a friend, too?" Angie questioned, shyly.
Rollie hesitated before answering. "No," He said. "You aren't."
Their eyes met for just a second, and the two of them instantly knew their missions were complete.
Rollie was the first to lean into the kiss, but Angie was none the less eager.
The phone began to ring, but both let it ring, silently knowing that neither of them were willing to let go.
Kit Marchado picked up the phone, hastily. "Yeah?"
"Kit? Is Angie there?"
"Nah, she's not." Kit replied. "I came looking for her, when she didn't answer her phone. She's obviously not here."
"Oh," Francis was silent. "'Cause I can't find Rollie either. I've tried the loft, but he's not there. I'm worried about him he sure had some heavy stuff on his mind today."
"Yeah, Angie too." Kit replied. "She was all stressed over a guy that she was into, but told me she couldn't reveal her feelings for him."
"Hmm, funny thing Rollie was telling me the same thing."
"About Angie?"
"No," Francis said. "About himself."
"You don't suppose " Kit began.
"Angie and Rollie " Francis let his sentence trail off. "Nah "
"Yeah, you're right. I mean, Rollie and Angie in love. What are the chances of that?"
