The next morning Leo came by the loft early to pick Rollie up. The Aussie was already up and ready to go to the hospital when Leo arrived. The detective wasn't even sure if Rollie had gotten any sleep. It didn't look like it.
On the way to the hospital, they stopped at Angie's apartment, so Rollie could pack some things of Angie's. He feed Chiops also. After the cat ate, Rollie found the cat carrier and put Chiops in it. The Aussie planned on having Angie stay at the loft for awhile whether she agreed to this or not.
When they arrived at the hospital they met Dr. MacBride in the elevator. She told them that Angie was awake and they could go on up and that she'd be there later to see about getting Angie released.
Upon entering Angie's room Rollie and Leo found her sitting up in bed, arms crossed over her chest, with a far away look in her eyes. Neither of them were sure she was aware of their presence.
Rollie walked slowly and quietly over to Angie. He put his hand on her shoulder and said, "Angie?"
Feeling the hand on her shoulder Angie came back to reality. She pulled back from the slight hold someone put on her shoulder. She looked up and saw a concerned Rollie staring at her, and Leo in the background.
"Didn't mean to scare you, Ang." Rollie told her, feeling her pull back and seeing the moment of fear in her eyes.
She looked at her hands and took a small breath. She looked at Rollie,
then at Leo. She smiled halfheartedly and said, "I just didn't hear you
come in, that's all. I'm fine." She looked away from Rollie as she said
it. He knew from his earlier conversation with Dr. MacBride that she was
putting on the tough act already. He didn't know what he had expected,
but it wasn't this so soon.
