The room rang
with echoes of the explosion. The fridge was a smoking wreck but
the door was sundered open.
' Move Angie'
he called, grabbing her hand as she got up.
The pulled the
fridge back, preparing to leave when a sound echoed in the room, another
set of beeps.
' We've got thirty
seconds on the clock Rol… what was that?' she asked.
' The floor'
he replied, pointing at the boards ' He's got a remote detonator'
' We've got to
get out Rol' Angie answered, heading for the smoking remains of the door.
Across the street
Victor Loubar watched, one hand pressed to his side, a lengthening stain
of red moving down his jacket to his trousers. Every word came through
the microphone and he lifted the handset.
' Tyler… looks
like you lose' he explained ' Nice work with the door though… that was
really quite good. Tell you what… I'll stop the timer, give you a
fair chance to say goodbye… but you try and get out and it goes at once…
two minutes'
Next to him, the former seal watched silently. It had been he who had set up the devices, and didn't get his second half of the payment until they'd done the job.
Loubar stepped
from the car and walked across to the path leading to the house, out of
sight of the hole in the door… Tyler still had the gun.
Rollie looked
around, listening as Loubar's voice echoed in the room. He mimicked
to Angela that there must be a microphone, then pointed to the floor.
' I said no trying
to escape… I can see you… so don't otherwise you lose the time you've got'
Loubar's voice echoed.
Rollie looked
at Angela and stepped towards her, taking her into his arms. The
timer had reset to two minutes and was counting down, they'd have to try
at the last moment but for now…
' Looks like
he got us Ange'
' Yeah… depressing'
' I don't know…
we got him enough times'
' True… think
he'll miss us?'
' Yeah, without
us to challenge him he's going to be bored'
Angela laughed
and Rollie joined in, the seconds were ticking by.
' You know… these
last months… they've been some of the happiest I've ever had' she said,
fingers tracing patterns on his chest.
' Me too.
Even when I thought I was happy before… it was missing something, early
on it was my mother… then… I don't know, I never connected to any of them,
not like I did with you'
' Any regrets?'
' A few.
We should have gotten together long before this'
' Yep' she answered,
looking across at the clock… sixty seconds.
' I love you
Angela… I know it's a little late, and more than a little silly right now
but… you think you'd like to marry me?'
' I wish you'd
asked me when we could have actually done something about it… but yeah…
I'd like that'
Rollie looked
around and came up somewhat amused, somewhat embarrassed with two strips
of wire ' Not exactly what I had in mind' he grinned, making rings of each
and taking her hand, sliding one onto her finger while she took the other
and did likewise.
' May I now kiss
the bride?'
' You may' she
answered, wrapping her arms around him as his lips descended on hers.
' How long?'
he whispered.
' Fifteen seconds'
' I love you'
' I love you
too'
' Ready?'
' Ready'
They shared another
kiss then, as one, turned for the door, dropping the fridge onto the floorboards
in hope that it would contain some of the blast.
Loubar saw the two shadows darken the doorway and pushed the button, standing up to see the results.
In the car the seal saw him pulled the remote detonator, eyes widening he called out ' You're too close!'
It was lost in
the explosion.
They never made
it to the door, but were caught in the blast, propelled through the door
to hammer into the path, limp… lifeless. The building crumbled, walls
collapsing and parts of the roof hitting other buildings across the street.
Loubar felt himself flung backwards, agony ripping through him as the flash caught him, lifting him like a baby and throwing him backwards through the air. A double stab of pain struck through him as he hit the ground, his shoulder dislocating and the bullet wound hammering into the floor.
Barely conscious he pulled himself away from the house towards the street, the Seal grabbed him, pulling him into the car and hastening away before anyone could arrive.
' Are they dead?'
he croaked.
' Damn right…
you should be too. I told you that it was safe from the car not the
damn pathway' the Seal answered ' now shutup and let me drive… I know a
guy who'll patch you up'
The building continued to burn as sirens sounded in the distance, coming to the rescue but already too late.
