Surreal...

by Erin B

Angela Ramirez walked slowly down the street - she deliberately slowed her breathing and moved her head from side to side a little to stretch the muscles in the side of her neck. "Ok Ramirez, you've still got 30 minutes before the shops close - plenty of time to get a present."

The young woman paused in front of a men's wear store. She'd got him a shirt last year - a blue one that matched her eyes, could she get away with getting him clothing again this year? Angie shook her head, nope, it had to be something different this year.

Angie stopped in front of a toy store - remembering Rollie was such a boy with his toys... Maybe... She entered the store, walking slowly between the rows of toys... Beany babies, nope not quite right for a birthday present - their delightfully unconstructed nature lent more towards spontaneous gifts, not ones for special occasions. Angie paused in front of the board games and puzzles - nah... too intellectual, she wanted something fun. She passed by the Barbie dolls and the Action men figures without even stopping. The toy store had a large collection of soft toys. The young woman looked them over carefully, her gaze stopped on a large Koala bear. She smiled in delight at the soft grey pelt and the large dark eyes.

"They're much cuter in real life," commented a man from behind her. Angie spun on her heel, recognising the soft accent.

"Rollie!?! What are you doing here? You're supposed to be meeting with that producer!?!" she asked in great surprise as she looked the tall man up and down incredulously.

"Rollie? You must have me mistaken for someone else. I'm sorry I disturbed you, excuse me..." the man's Australian accent was even more evident the more he talked.

The young woman was dumbfounded, "Umm..." she interjected quickly before he had a chance to walk off. Now that she could look at him more carefully his hair was shorter than Rollie's and he was lacking a scar on his cheek, just under his eye. "I apologise - you *strongly* resemble a friend of mine... He's Australian too." She held out a hand, "Ahh... I'm Angie Ramirez."

The man took her hand and smiled, "Cameron Daddo - at your service."

"Nice to meet you, Cameron. So, you come to toy stores often?" she questioned, smiling.

The tall Australian blushed a little, "Actually I'm looking for a gift for my daughter. How about you?"

"Oh, umm, a gift for the friend who kinda looks like you." Angie couldn't get over the strong resemblance, especially with the fact this guy was Australian as well.

Cameron grinned broadly, increasing the resemblance in the young woman's mind to a certain F/X specialist. "Well, in that case - he must be a man of discernible taste. I recommend one of these." He held up a puppet that looked a little like an emu or an ostrich - there were four strings, the front and back attached to the bird's head and body respectively. The left and right strings were attached to the left and right feet of the toy. It had big eyes and was covered in a long soft feathery 'pelt' in a variety of shades of green.

Angie looked down in surprise, "Oh my goodness, it's perfect! But you're already picked it out for yourself?" She mildly depressed at the thought of not being able to purchase the puppet.

The Australian smiled again, "It's your lucky day - I was on my way to put it back. I had another idea."

"You mean I can have it?"

"Sure - if you want it." shrugged Cameron, as he handed the toy over.

Angie grinned, "Thanks, I appreciate it. Oh, and thanks for your help too."

The tall man nodded and waved a quick goodbye before he disappeared between the stacks of toys again. The young woman watched him go - feeling like the whole experience was a little surreal. She shrugged and headed towards a counter to purchase the perfect present.
