I
Saw a Man Who Wasn't There...
Part
Ten

Angie screamed. Victor Loubar was very much alive, although the body
she had believed to have been his was burnt to a crisp in the truck.
For a moment she didn't move -- she was frozen in shock at the sight of
his face. He's dead! she thought. For a moment she thought
she was hallucinating. But when he grabbed for her wrist she realized
she wasn't hallucinating. Somehow Loubar was alive. And standing
right in front of her.
She pulled her hand away, and in the same instant ducked under the counter
and out the side. She ran as fast as she could toward the door, ignoring
the searing pain in her ankle.
"Stop!" she heard Loubar exclaim, behind her. She heard a
click which sounded like it had come from a gun. But she kept running,
praying he wouldn't shoot her ...
Loubar swore silently. He couldn't kill Angela -- he needed her.
And in her weakened state, he wouldn't dare even wound her. He looked
at the gun in his hand, now, in his eyes, useless. He pushed it back
onto his belt, and chased after Angie ...
Angie had never felt as terrified in her life. She still couldn't
believe that Loubar -- the walking dead -- was chasing her. But she
kept running. Seeing an alleyway, she turned and disappeared into
it just as Loubar ran out of the store. "Angelaaa!!" he
yelled, chasing after her ...
Rollie heard the shouts, and turned. The voice was familiar.
He saw a figure disappear into an alleyway near him, and, a few seconds
behind, another person chasing after her. Suddenly the identity of
the man who had shouted sunk in. Rollie froze in disbelief.
It couldn't be ... he thought. But, when the man shouted again,
Rollie knew it was true. Loubar was very much alive.
And Rollie was almost certain he was chasing Angie.
There was a second alley right where Rollie was standing. Rollie
lept over a garbage can and ran down the narrow passageway, hoping that
he could get to Angie when she came out the other side.
As long as Loubar doesn't get her first ...
Gasping for breath, and feeling faint from the pain in her foot, Angie
exited the alley and found herself on a deserted sidewalk. She glanced
behind her, and saw Loubar about thirty feet behind her. His physical
strength and the fact that Angie was hurt meant he was gaining fast.
Angie turned left, then, seeing an open doorway, abruptly turned left again,
and ran inside the darkened building.
Slamming the door shut behind her, she found herself in the front lobby
of what looked like a small office building. There was a simple white
desk and five or six chairs spread throughout the room. The few plastic
plants that had probably been added to the room to give it some feeling
of style had seen better days. Apart from a few other pieces of furniture
and some old magazines, the room was fairly bare.
There were two hallways leading off from the room. One quickly turned
into a flight of stairs that led to the second floor. The second
hall led back into the interior of the building. Angie hoped that
the building had a back entrance, and so chose the second hall.
Angie could hear Loubar shouting for her, outside. She suspected
it wouldn't be long until he determined she'd entered the building, so
she knew she had to move quickly ...
Rollie reached the end of the alley just in time to see Loubar run out
on the other side of the building. Rollie quickly ducked in behind
the shelter of the building.
"Angelaaaaa," Loubar was calling. "Where did you go?
Come out come out wherever you aarrrre!"
Rollie was just as clueless about where Angie was as Loubar.
She couldn't have just disappeared, he thought. He recalled
when he'd seen her first run between the two buildings. She'd been
limping slightly, as if she was hurt. She wouldn't be far if she
was that bad, he thought. He dared peek around the corner again
... Loubar was still standing there, calling her. Taunting her.
"Angieee ... !"
