"How'd you guess?" said Loubar, grinning. He closed the hospital
room door.
"Get out of here," said Rollie.
"Oh, no -- not yet," said Loubar. "So, Mira -- how are you feeling?"
"Fine," said Mira, coldly. "Or I was."
"That was a pretty fun ride you had out there," said Loubar. "I know,
'cause I watched. Really exciting. I -- "
Quick as lightning, Rollie leapt up from his chair and tried to tackle
Loubar. But just as quickly, Loubar lashed out, and knocked him down.
He whipped a gun out of his pocket. It was equipped with a silencer.
"Nice try," said Loubar, as Rollie moaned, picking himself up off the floor.
"Loubar, why don't you just kill us now and get it over with, if that's
what you want!!" exclaimed Angie.
"No no no," said Loubar. "My dear, dear Angie. You have it
all
wrong. I don't want to harm you. Or any of your friends.
I need you people -- alive."
"What ... the hell ... could you need us for??" grumbled Rollie, pulling
himself up off the floor.
"Because ... one of you has what I want."
Mira, Rollie, and Angie exchanged looks. "I promise you," said Mira,
"there is nothing we have that you'd want."
"Oh, but there is," said Loubar. "And one of you has it. But
I don't know which one. So, you see, I am faced with a dilemma.
So I suggest, whichever one of you has it, gives it to me now. And
you won't be harmed."
"If we knew what the hell you were talking about," said Rollie,
"I'm sure we would cooperate."
"Playing tough?" said Loubar. "All right, then." He grabbed
Angie's arm, still keeping his gun trained on Rollie and Mira. He
ran his hands down her jacket, feeling in both pockets. When he found
nothing, he continued on downward, searching through her jeans pockets.
Nothing. There wasn't even anything in her shoes. "Oh, so it's
not you," he said to Angie, shoving her back down in her seat. "I
didn't think so. Mr. Tyler," he said, turning, "would you like to
be next?"
Rollie sighed, frustrated. "What the hell are you looking for??"
he
asked.
Loubar rolled his eyes. "All right," he said. He stepped back,
toward the door, locking it. Then he began to talk, always making
sure his gun was trained on the trio. "See, our good friend Duncan
Torrens may be a crazy psychopath, but he is a genius. And,
well, he's left me a present. A small diskette, with the codes to
break some of the most secure computer systems in the world."
"You're branching out," said Rollie, dryly. "Going high-tech.
Well, good for you," he said, slamming his fist into his palm, "but
what makes you think we have this disk!"
"Well, see, I knew where Duncan hid the disk. But, when I got there
-- it was gone. And, due to reasons which I won't disclose at the
moment, I knew it had to be one of you who took it."
"What if it wasn't?" said Mira, slowly.
"Well, if, for some strange reason, none of you have the disk -- I could
not let you tell everyone what I was looking for. My only
way out would be to kill you. All."
