The Mainframe

(this is set before "Requiem for a Cop")

Angie looked up.  It was Lucinda.  "Hey, what's up Luce?" she said, seeing the depressed look on her friend's face.
"Nothing," said Lucinda, shrugging her shoulders, staring at the ceiling.
Angie stood up, and walked around the edge of her desk until she stood in front of Lucinda.  She grabbed her friend's shoulders.  "Spit it," she ordered, playfully.
"Oh, all right!" exclaimed Lucinda, laughing.  "I'm just mad I didn't get my part."
"What part?" asked Angie, frowning.  "I didn't know you were trying out for a new movie."
"Oh, but I was," said Lucinda.  "I was really excited.  Some kind of sci-fi thing, I think.  It's supposed to be really big and exciting.  And I thought I would play the perfect heroine.  But obviously the producers didn't think so."
Angie clapped her friend on the shoulder.  "Well, I guess you can't have 'em all," said Angie.
'No kidding," said Lucinda.  "I found out who got my part, too."
Angie looked up.  "Who?" she asked.
"Well, I don't know her name," said Lucinda, "but I heard she looks kinda like me.  Some Canadian.  I don't know.  Maybe I'm wrong."
Angie offered Lucinda a cup of coffee, which she had just poured.  "Hmm, that's weird," said Angie.
    "What?" asked Lucinda.
"I just felt this wave of deja vu.  Weeeird."
Lucinda raised her eyebrows.  "Oh yeah?" she continued.  "I guess there will always be other parts.  Besides, the movie sounded kind of odd.  And they said something about it being physically demanding.  Not that I couldn't do it.  I am a trained stuntwoman, you know."
"Yeah, right," said Angie, rolling her eyes.  "So, what was this movie going to be called anyway?"
"You know, I'm not sure," said Lucinda.  "The Mainframe, or something."
    Angie winced.  "Sounds corny."
"It does, doesn't it?  I guess we'll just find out what it's like when it comes out, huh ...?"
