As per you and Maureen's tradition here is my beginning b-day fic.

Part One: Battered

It is obviously an Alternate Universe story containing a cross-over between FX: The Series and Hope Island, which I unfortunately own none of! Ultimately, other series will also come into play and will be explained at such time, but for now these are the only two of importance.

* For Hope Island fans... I ask for your indulgence, it will take a little time before we get there but I hope you feel the pay-off is worth it.

This is rated R from the first sentence so you have been cautioned. Lastly, I gratefully acknowledge Peggy and Maureen for allowing me to borrow from their writings, hopefully enriching my tale. Also to Monika for her assistance in part five which I am embarking on soon.

Okay, that's it for now, on to Chapter One of "Battered"....

"Battered"

Chapter One

Angie Ramirez-Tyler felt lips start at her lower back and travel up to her neck.

"Picking up from last night huh?" She grinned, turning over.

Her answer was a passionate kiss and exploring hands.

The phone rang at that moment and she forced her husband, Rollie, onto his back and straddled him. "You answer it, it will be the last thing you ever do!" She threatened.

"Could be a job." The Aussie replied, accent more pronounced.

"It can wait, I can't!" She growled kissing him.

"Promise we'll be doing this when we're eighty?" He groaned.

"Viagra sweetheart." She laughed.

"As insatiable as you are I'll need it." He retorted.

"Who woke whom up this morning?"

"Good point." He breathed and flipped her back over.

An hour later Rollie slipped out of bed, donned his robe and headed downstairs while Angie showered. "Blue, messages."

The mechanical pet barked once and played them as Rollie turned the coffee-maker on and pulled out a couple of pans which he sprayed then set on a low fire.

'Hey,Rollie, it's Kenny Davenport. I've got a new project and I want the best FX team on it, of course ILM was busy so I had to resort to you!'

"Real comedienne Kenny!" Rollie grumbled as the voice laughed at his own comment.

'If you're interested give me a call at the Le Parker Meridien, room 815.'

"Upscale, but not uptight." Rollie recited their tagline as he cracked three eggs, added a touch of milk and scrambled them together in a dish with a dash of salt and pepper. He pulled out the bread and dipped four pieces into the mixture then put them into the sizzling pans. While they were cooking he poured two mugs of coffee, putting it, a pair of forks and the bottle of syrup on the table.

"Mmm, french toast, you can cook for me every morning husband." Angie smiled coming in.

"Don't hold your breath wife." He replied putting the plates on the table.

"Guess the honeymoon's over." She sighed dramatically, digging into the food.

"Only the part where I cook you breakfast everyday." He answered giving her a meaningful look.

"Oh! I see how it's going to be! You get your way with me and then I slave over a hot stove while you lounge around here!" She gave him another look.

"Nah! We'll lounge together...order in...continue the honeymoon." He grinned.

"Promise?"

"Cross my heart and...." He trailed off guiltily.

"You pulled that on me once buster, I wouldn't forgive you a second time!" She growled and slipped her hand into his.

Rollie looked up and returned her smile.

"So who called while we were honeymooning?"

"Kenny Davenport, a project he wants us in on."

"Details?"

"Said to call him. Le Parker Meridien." He added in a French accent.

"He's moved up in the world." She replied wide-eyed.

"I'll call after I shower. Too bad you already had yours." He sighed.

"You are taking this newlywed time table seriously aren't you?" She teased.

"Time table huh? How're we doing so far?"

"A little ahead of the record."

"Good," he answered taking their plates to the sink, "by the time our second anniversary comes 'round no one will have a chance at beating us for centuries." He added heading for the stairs.

"I'd better take naps whenever.....and wherever I can." She groaned.

By the time Rollie returned to the lower level of the loft Angie had washed and dried the dishes and was reading the paper.

"Blue, call the Le Parker Meridien, put it on speaker phone."

'Le Parker Meridien, how may I help you?'

"Room 815 please."

'One moment while I connect you.'

'Mister Davenport's suite, who may I say is calling?' A woman answered.

Rollie and Angie exchanged a surprised look.

"Rollie and Angie Tyler." The Aussie replied.

'One moment, sir.'

"A secretary?" Angie whispered.

"He really has moved up in the world." Rollie nodded.

'Hey! how are my two favorite FXers? I know I'm a bit late, but congratulations!'

"Thanks. Sorry we didn't invite you to the wedding but ---" Rollie began.

'I understand, just a little family and close friends ceremony. Between you and me that's the way to go but Beth had her heart set on the works so....'

A moment of silence passed as they recalled the blond with the quick wit. The cancer had been found too late and she had died within two months. It had been a year since her passing and almost as long since Kenny had moved to L.A. to escape the memories.

'Anyway,' the producer said, 'this movie is going to be something else and I really want you on board.'

"What's it about?" Angie asked.

'Tell you what, I have a meeting with a backer in half-an-hour, why don't you guys come by around one and you can take a look at the script yourselves.'

"Okay, we'll see you at one then." Rollie answered upon Angie's nod.

'Oh, forego lunch and we can eat here.'

"Sounds like a plan, see you then." Rollie agreed.

'Until then.'

"Speaker phone off, Blue."

"So, Mister Tyler, what shall we do until then?"

"Well," Rollie replied unbuttoning her blouse and kissing her neck, "I can think of one thing."

"You really are going for that record." She uttered and brought his lips to hers for a hungry kiss.

Rollie stood and pulled her to her feet and led her up the steps.

At twelve noon they climbed into the Acura and headed uptown to the swank hotel where the valet took the sports car to a parking garage.

The couple rode the elevator up to the eighth floor and found his room easily.

A leggy brunette in a short skirt opened the door and Angie gritted her teeth at the look she was giving Rollie.

"May I help you?" She smiled at the Aussie.

"Mr. and Mrs.," Angie emphasized, "Tyler, to see Kenny."

"Please have a seat, you're a bit early." She replied, eyeing Rollie again.

Angie clenched her fists as Rollie ushered her inside the suite.

"I can't believe her nerve!" Angie fumed as the brunette disappeared behind a set of double doors.

"Something wrong?" Rollie asked.

"She was practically throwing herself at you!"

"Really? Hadn't noticed since I only have eyes for one woman."

Angie's jealousy faded upon seeing the love in his eyes.

He took her hand while they waited and Angie wore a smug look upon the woman's return.

"Mr. Davenport will be with you in a moment."

"Thanks." Rollie nodded sliding an arm around Angie's waist.

The woman picked up her briefcase and left without a glance backward.

"Wonder what her problem is?" Rollie uttered.

Angie smiled at him.

They had to wait a few more minutes before Kenny appeared.

"Rollie! Angie! It's great to see you again!"

By all appearances Kenny Davenport hadn't changed since they last saw him, still 5'10, full head of blond hair, piercing green eyes, athletically built and one of the nicest people they had ever worked with.

"Thanks, you look good too....for working out there." Rollie jabbed at his residence.

"It might do wonders for your career." He retorted then turned to Angie. "Married life seems to suit you...too bad it's to this guy."

Angie chuckled as Rollie acted miffed.

"So do we get a look at this script?" She asked as he escorted her to the table set up with lunch for three.

He nodded and handed her an inch thick, leather bound one from his briefcase. "The premise is the second page in." He added as they sat down.

She dug into the script, ignoring the plate of food before her.

Rollie watched her face as he ate and saw a myriad of emotions play across it as she read.

Angie put the script down and looked at the producer.

"So...?" He smiled.

"I'm only on page 35 and I'm hooked."

"That good huh?" Rollie asked.

Angie handed it over and nibbled at her meal while he read.

The Aussie looked at his wife and saw the hope in her eyes then turned to Kenny. "What kind of contract are we talking?"

The producer pulled one out of his briefcase and handed it to him.

Rollie read it over, satisfied, but something caught his eye and he frowned. "Seven thousand for travel expenses? What kind of travel?"

"Location shoot. A little ways from here." Kenny answered, rather evasively, Rollie thought.

"East of the Mississippi?" He asked.

"Um....a bit further West."

"Arizona?" Angie asked. She'd alway's wanted to see the Grand Canyon.

"Uh...actually....Washington, the state."

"That's how many thousands of miles?" Rollie asked, not thrilled by that kind of drive in the van.

"I know, but I really want you with me on this. I don't trust anyone else to create something that doesn't look hokey. You have three weeks travel time.... give you a chance to do the tourist thing. We start principle photography on the third."

"It would be nice to see some of the country." Angie mentioned.

Rollie knew their work kept them on the East coast for the most part and Angie had mentioned wanting to travel cross-country some day.... "I refuse to stop at, 'The Largest Ball of Yarn in the World' Museum." He eyed her.

"No yarn, I swear." She smiled happily.

"Look's like you got an FX team." Rollie sighed as he scribbled his name, then Angie did likewise since they were partners, on the contract.

"Now that business is taken care of, let's eat!" Kenny grinned.

"Have the part's been cast yet?" Angie asked.

"David Cameron is the lead, Alison Duncan and Beverly Haig co-star."

Angie bit her lip, giddy with excitement. She had first seen David Cameron on screen ten years ago and had become star-struck. He was the only actor to ever set her pulse racing. She hoped Rollie didn't remember that. Maybe he'll be a jerk and I won't like him....but I hope not!

Rollie's ey's danced with mirth as he glanced at Angie. I recall a certain teen-ager having a monster crush on David Cameron a few years back. This should be interesting. "Do you have an extra script? We can plan out the effects before we get there and fax them to the set for the director to see."

"Keep that one."

"What do you say to an early Monday morning start sweetie? That'll give us plenty of time."

"Yeah and we avoid rush-hour here." She nodded.

Kenny's cell phone rang and he took the call in the outer room.

"Tell me the truth Rol, were you as taken by it as I was?"

"Yeah, I was. I want to read the rest and see what happens to ---"

"Sorry about that, another backer for a different film wants a meeting this afternoon." Kenny sighed.

"That's okay, we need to get going to make sure we have all our FX supplies together by Sunday." Rollie nodded.

"I'll be flying out in a couple of weeks so I'll see you when you arrive. You can tell me all about the trip." Kenny grinned shaking their hands.

"

Believe me, you will hear about it." Rollie promised.

The producer laughed and walked them out. "I really look forward to working with you again."

"Likewise mate." Rollie nodded and slipped an arm around Angie's shoulder.

"I'll get a copy of the contract to you before you leave."

"Let's go love, so we can finish the script and figure out their miracles."

The couple left the hotel headed for the loft knowing there was a lot of work to do before hitting the road.

Chapter Two

Rollie finished putting their suitcases in the FX van.

"Everything on board Ange?" He called.

"Almost." She replied then appeared holding their coats.

"Ange, it's warm out there."

"Yeah, here it is." She replied and shoved them into his arms.

He sighed and headed for the van with them when there was a knock on the door. Changing directions, he answered it and found Frank there.

"Need a hand?" The detective asked.

"No worries. Ange is probably rounding up Chiops, come on in." The Aussie chuckled.

Frank stepped into the loft where he saw Angie coming from the kitchen with the cat.

"The girls are really excited about having him for the next few months."

"I hope you still feel that way by the time we get back." Rollie replied from the van.

"Don't listen to dad, he'll miss you too." Angie told the cat.

Frank chuckled as he scratched the cat behind the ears.

"Okay, is everything on board now?" Rollie asked rejoining them.

"Looks like." She nodded glancing around.

"We'll be hitting the road in a few hours, we should get a good night's sleep."

"Yeah, it's going to be a long trip." Angie agreed.

"Does he have everything?" Rollie asked, nodding at the cat.

"Toys and lots of cat food." Angie smiled. "Say good-bye to dad." She held the cat up to him.

Rollie wrinkled his nose and rolled his eyes.

Chiops ignored Rollie and licked its paws.

"Feelings mutual." Rollie muttered and picked up the bag next to the pet carrier. "I'll put this in your car." He said to Frank and headed for the door while Angie got the cat into the carrier.

Rollie just closed the back door of the sedan when Frank appeared with the carrier.

"Where's Ange?"

"She forgot his blanket." Frank replied.

Rollie reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet and pulled out a twenty dollar bill. "In case you run out of cat food....he likes the Whiskas treats too." The Aussie said handing the money to him, ignoring the man's grin as he put the wallet away.

"Okay, here's his blanket, he'll probably want to sleep on the bed but he'll be okay in the carrier. The vet's number is in the bag. You be good for the Gattis." She told the cat, sticking her finger in the carrier and rubbing its fur. It meowed once then ignored her. "You have our cell numbers and e-mail, right?"

"Rollie gave them to me yesterday." He nodded.

"We'll call when we get there." She added as he put the cat in the car.

"Okay, you guys have a safe trip....drive carefully. Oh! Sarah says to take lots of pictures."

"We'll e-mail them back." Rollie smiled.

Frank hugged them both then left for home.

"You know, that cat of yours probably won't even want to come back the way those girls will spoil him." Rollie teased as they walked back inside.

"You'd like that, wouldn't you? No more sharing the bed." She teased back.

"You have to admit, he did come at some of the most inopportune times."

"I don't recall that stopping us." She answered and led him up the steps.

Rollie groaned as the alarm went off at 4 a.m. It was on his side of the bed and he reached out and hit the off button.

"Rise and shine sweetie." He yawned and shook her arm.

"Too early." She mumbled.

"Road trip." He replied kissing her neck.

"All ready?" She sighed and lifted her head. "I was having such a nice dream....we were on the beach making love."

"You'll have to give me a detailed account at our first hotel stop." He growled throatily.

"I suppose you'll want demonstrations too."

"Naturally." He grinned then slapped her on the backside and got out of bed before she could retaliate.

They took quick showers and microwaved a couple of breakfasts and made instant coffee, the only food in the house since they decided they would not care to come home to an out of control science experiment.

Rollie checked his watch as Angie climbed into the passenger seat and buckled in and saw it was 5:30 on the dot.

"Blue, set the alarm when the garage door closes then go to watch mode." He ordered his "guard dog" as he started the van.

"Here we come Washington." Angie smiled as they backed out.

"Hope they know what they're in for." He joked as they headed for the interstate.

Chapter Three

Rollie yawned as they turned left onto Broadway. "How long a haul is this Ange?"

"2857.7 miles one way. Almost 48 hours."

"So if we average ten hours on the road a day ---"

"Split between the two of us."

"Should take us five days ----"

"Make it ten....sight seeing." She smiled.

"Okay," he chuckled, "ten it is."

"That gives us eleven days when we get to Seattle."

"Good, it also gives us 250 dollars a day for gas, food and hotel."

"I like the hotel part." She eyed him with a lascivious smile.

"Find that first hotel right now!"

Angie laughed and leaned against the headrest. "You and me on the road, it will be something to tell our kids about."

"Better take lots of pictures sweetie." He reminded.

Angie pulled the 'Rollie Tyler specially modified digital camera' from her bag as he turned right onto W. 79th. St. She touched play on the CD player and looked at Rollie.

"Cute Ange!" He shook his head and smile as 'What You Need' by INXS began.

"Just making you feel at home hon." She grinned.

They sang along to the disc as Rollie merged onto Henry Hudson Parkway.

"Pop quiz! What ship was Henry Hudson in command of when he first entered New York Bay?"

Rollie drummed his fingers on the steering wheel while Angie hummed the Jeopardy! theme.

"What's your answer?" She asked coming to the end of the theme.

Rollie smiled.

"1609, from Amsterdam on the Half Moon."

"I knew you would know that! I just knew it!"

The Aussie shrugged. He'd always remembered the most unusual things, even as a child. Some of his teachers were amazed when he came to America over the details he retained from simply reading something. Like the first settlers in Pennsylvania were Swedish, or that the Hebrew word for Monday was Yom sheni. He had no idea how he picked these things up or why he remembered them.

"We are now entering Lincoln Tunnel ladies and gentlemen." Angie said putting her hand over her mouth mimicking a microphone sound.

"Don't mind her folks, she's just an escaped mental patient." He used his hand the same way.

"And he helped me escape." She retorted.

"Only 'cause I love ya baby!"

"Aw! Ain't that shweet!"

Rollie merged onto I-495 West. "Where's our first overnight?"

"Toledo, Ohio." She answered checking the PDA. "Let's stop in Cleveland on the way. I want to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....and Museum."

"How about just a quick lunch then?"

"We can have a relaxing dinner in Cleveland. Toledo isn't that much farther so we can still get a good night's sleep." She agreed.

They passed through Pennsylvania and Angie took several digital shots of the fall foliage. They both commented on how spectacular the view was, particularly with the Allegheny Mountains rising in the background.

Every few hours they switched driving duties and got a fastfood lunch of burger and fries, making it to Cleveland by 3:30.

"There it is!" Angie pointed to the pyramid shaped building as Rollie took the exit. She snapped a few pictures when he pulled into the parking lot. "This is going to be so cool!" She squealed as they exited the van.

Rollie paid the 30 dollar admission fees and they walked around taking pictures, some with Rollie in front of an exhibit, some with Angie posing at others. They hit the gift shop where Angie chose an Elvis tee-shirt and Rollie picked up a 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' cap. They were looking around for some gifts for Mira and Frank when the loudspeaker crackled.

'Attention visitors....the museum will close in five minutes.'

Rollie looked at his watch and frowned, it was just going on 5:30. "Why are you closing so early?" He asked the clerk as she rang up the purchases.

"Normal hours, except for Wednesday and Saturday, when we're open 'til 9." She answered bagging the items.

He paid by credit card and walked out with Angie following silently. They climbed into the van and he started the engine. "I know which part of the website you didn't read." He commented.

"I'm really sorry Rol." She said lightly.

"Forget it," he chuckled. "Let's find a place to eat and relax.

She smiled and checked the PDA. "There's a blues club about a mile from here."

"Blues it is." He nodded and followed her directions.

They paid a small cover fee and found a table toward the front where they ordered sandwiches and drinks and listened to the singer on stage.

"Ya all know what time it is don't ya?" She asked finishing her set. "That's right, that's right.....audience time.......ooh, I found my first one." She grinned and descended the stage steps and walked right to Rollie. "What's your name sugar?"

"Uh.....Rollie, this is my wife Angie." He answered embarrassed.

"Well, uh.....Rollie,where you from hon?"

"New York." He blushed.

"Well now, I ain't never been to New York but that accent don't sound like any New Yorker I heard."

"I'm Australian."

"That's a mighty long way from New York. What's you doin' in Cleveland?"

"Just passing through on our way to Seattle."

"Ah, seen anything interestin', besides me?" She teased.

"Um....the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....we only got a little over an hour, they closed at 5:30."

"Lance...."

The band started playing a bluesy melody.

"Well they was on their way to Seattle,
Rollie the Aussie and his wife Angie too,
They stopped here in Cleveland,
At the Rock Hall of Fame,
Got to tour for an hour,
Then closed up on them.
They got the....Rock and Roll Hall of Fame blu...ues."

The crowd clapped appreciatively and she gave Rollie's shoulder a squeeze and raised his hand to wave to the crowd as he blushed then she moved on to another table to chat someone else up.

"My husband, blues lyricist." Angie teased.

"That was embarrassing." He uttered.

"You were so cute. I think she likes you, you seem to have that affect on women."

"Don't know why." He mumbled.

"Let's find that hotel in Toledo and I'll show you."

Chapter Four

Rollie and Angie left Toledo at 8 A.M. after a breakfast at the motel. Rollie hoped it would help them avoid heavy Chicago traffic.

"Um, Rollie?"

"Yeah, sweetie?"

"Well... um....our hotel stay this leg is St. Paul, right?"

"Yes."

"Well.... there's the Navy Pier in Chicago and I do want to see it.... but...."

"Spit it out Ange."

"There'saSixFlagsinGreatLakesandnotreallythat muchfartherandtechnicallywedohaveforty-eighthours togettoSt.Paulsocanwepleasegothere?Please?" She rushed out.

"An amusement park. Rollercoasters. She'll want to ride the rollercoasters and she'll want me to ride them too." He muttered to himself.

"One coaster, I promise Rol." She answered holding up her left hand and putting her right on his PDA.

Rollie glanced at her and fought the grin threatening to break out.

"What major cities are after Chicago?" He asked.

"Um... Rockford, Madison then St. Paul."

"If we can make Rockford or Madison by tonight!" He growled.

"Thank you Rol." She grinned and kissed his cheek.

Rollie gripped the wheel as they merged with Chicago traffic. A car cut in front of him, just clearing his bumper and he sighed. He hoped no one hit them because he didn't have time to get the van repaired.

"You want to get over to the far lane about three miles down the road." Angie advised.

He nodded and looked for an opening, one was given by an out-of-towner and he nodded gratefully and took the exit to the Navy Pier.

They found a parking place and walked along the pier looking at the outdoor sculptures and watching the jugglers and clowns and listening to the musicians and singers.

After eating lunch they walked some more and Angie pointed.

"Look Rol, boat and bus tours! Can we?" She pleaded.

Rollie sighed and nodded and she drug him to the boat landing where he paid and they settled into seats. Angie held his hand as they started the tour, thinking how romantic it would be at night.

Rollie pulled his hand away and placed his arm around her shoulder starting to relax and he smiled as she put her head on his shoulder.

This is nice, he thought, I want it to always be this way.

"Rol?"

"Hmm?"

"Can we ride the ferris wheel?"

He laughed and hugged her.

"This is the best view." Angie breathed as the ferris wheel stopped at the top.

"Right at home, eh Batwoman?"

"Let's go back to the van Batman and I'll show you what home is." She looked at him.

They headed for the parking lot once the ride was over, until Angie saw something in the gift shop window.

"Angie." He growled.

"We have to get something for the Gattis for watching Chiops.... and I'll make it worth your wait."

"You'd better." He hissed into her ear.

She bought a working replica of the ferris wheel and they were walking out of the shop when a woman shrieked.

"HE STOLE MY PURSE! STOP HIM!"

"May I?" Rollie asked picking up a frisbee from a juggler's suitcase.

The man nodded and Rollie climbed onto the base of the lightpole and whipped the disk at the man running with the purse through the crowd several meters ahead. It skipped off the dock and hit him in the back of the knee which sent him tumbling. Two police officers hauled him to his feet and cuffed him as the woman ran over to them.

Rollie jumped down and nodded, satisfied.

"Hey man, where'd you learn that?"

Rollie turned to see a couple of African-American teenager's gawking at him.

"Practicing with a boomerang mates." He answered and took Angie's hand and led her away.

"Real life 'Crocodile Dundee' man!" He heard one say and chuckled at it.

"So, I'm married to 'Croc. Dundee', huh?" Angie smirked as they reached the van.

" 'at's right. Now I'm gonna show ya my technique sheila." He replied closing the door behind them and picking up the PDA to hit the tint screen for the windows which darkened.

Angie surprised him and pushed him into the chair.

"Now you Aussie," She said straddling him," show me that technique."

With a grin, Rollie obliged.

"God Rol, that was better than any rollercoaster." She sighed contentedly.

"While I wholeheartedly agree with you, I was kind of looking forward to Six Flags." He answered caressing her arm.

"You really want to go?" She asked looking at him in surprise.

"Yeah, it'll be fun." He nodded.

"Okay, but I need to use the bathroom first."

"You and me both."

They got dressed, went to the bathrooms on the pier and with Angie behind the wheel, headed for the amusement park.

They paid the ten dollar parking fee then Rollie sighed and shelled out nearly a hundred dollars for the entrance fee.

He couldn't help but laugh as Angie grabbed his hand and ran toward the rollercoaster like an excited kid.

'Medusa', according to the PDA, was the first floorless coaster in the world. It was a flying chair that plunged 13 stories and rocketed through more than ten highly banked turns.

"This is the only one I'm riding Angela!" He groaned looking it over.

"How can a man who rigs himself to an apparatus that spins him around and upside down get queasy just looking at a rollercoaster?" She laughed as they reached the end of the line.

"I just don't like all those drops." He complained.

"How about if I hold your hand real tight?"

"That might help a little."

"What if I add a kiss to the deal?"

"Don't know if it will keep me from chundering, but it's a nice thought."

"Not a coaster fan either?" The man in front of them asked turning.

"Not particularly."

"My son wanted to ride and my wife adamantly refused so I get the displeasure."

"I told Ange I'd ride one. That's all I can handle." Rollie sighed.

"Are you Australian?"

"Sure am mate."

"Had a week's R & R there after a tour in the Gulf. The people were really nice."

The comment made Rollie smile.

"Little far from home though aren't you?"

"Home has been New York for the last ten years."

"Ah, I'm originally from Florida myself, my parents immigrated from Cuba when I was a boy."

"Cuba? That's where I was born."

The three adults conversed as the line progressed and all too soon for Rollie's tastes they were getting into the seats. The harness was pulled down and locked into place and Angie took his hand as she had promised.

The Aussie closed his eyes as the ride began to move, it took them up hill and down, sideways and around, all at breakneck speeds. He heard Angie's screams and shrieks of laughter and trying to keep the queasiness at bay, he forced his thoughts to a calm place and all of a sudden he was in the Dreamtime...... he saw wolves circling a gazelle....

"Rol? Rollie?!?"

Rollie opened his eyes slowly and looked at a concerned Angie.

"It's over Rol. The ride's over." She soothed and helped him get out of the seat then led him to a near-by bench in the shade. She got a bottle of water and rubbed his back as he slowly drank it. "I'm sorry Rol, I didn't realize it was that bad for you." She apologized, feeling terrible about teasing him now.

He shook his head and swallowed the water. "It wasn't.... I didn't....." He sighed and looked at her. "I was in the Dreamtime."

"What did you see?" She asked sitting next to him.

He told her and she frowned.

"What do you think it means?"

He shrugged and took another sip of water.

"Well, let's break it down. It was just a gazelle surrounded by wolves?"

"Yeah."

"There were no eagles, so we weren't directly involved. The gazelle is either someone we know... or someone we're going to meet. So what does a gazelle represent?"

"They're graceful." He shrugged.

Angie pulled the PDA from her pocket and tapped into its word base.

"Gazelle....noted for their grace and gentleness, and for the softness of the expression of their eyes."

"I don't know what it means but Mangela always told me that nature reveals herself in her own time. I'm not gonna rack my brain, it will be shown to me eventually. In the meantime, let's enjoy the few hours we have left before we have to hit the road again."

"Sounds good....and no more rollercoasters."

"Promise?" He asked gratefully.

"Struth." She grinned, taking on his accent.

Rollie smiled back and they found a more sedate ride.... the carousel, and held hands the entire time.

They tried their hand at a few games, with no success, and she left him on a bench while she went to get pizza.

Rollie looked around and walked over to another game and plunked his money down. He picked up the baseball and wound up to hit the milkbottles.

Angie carried the food back to where she had left her husband and frowned at his absence. She looked around then broke into a grin upon seeing a stuffed kangaroo, with very long legs, heading her way.

"G'day you beautiful sheila!" It said to her.

"I appreciate the compliment, but alas I'm taken."

"Lucky bloke!"

"I happen to think I'm the lucky one, boomer."

"Psychic too! 'ow'd you know my name?"

"Well, as it happens, my husband is Australian and he told me a male kangaroo is a boomer." She answered and pulled the animal down to see her husband's smiling face.

"He's all yours love." Rollie smiled.

"Thank you. I love him." She kissed him.

They sat together on the bench with 'Boomer', as Angie decided to call him, off to the side while they ate. They walked around some more then Angie went to the bathroom leaving Rollie and 'Boomer' to wait by the carousel.

He watched a little blond girl, engrossed by the carousel, and smiled wondering if his and Angie's kids would look like that. She moved closer to the ride and he looked for her parents, but no one seemed to be watching her at all. He rose and took 'Boomer' with him.

"Hi." He knelt down to her level and smiled.

The girl's eyes grew wide with fear.

"My name's 'Boomer', this 'ere's Rollie, we was wonderin' if you was lost?" Rollie said, using 'Boomer' like a puppet.

"No, I'm not lost. My parents are." She replied tearfully.

"How's about we go and tell someone?"

"I'm not supposed to go with strangers." She shook her head.

"Well 'at's a good thing to remember. How abouts if I keep you company and my mate Rollie finds someone to find your parents?"

The girl nodded slowly.

Rollie handed the 'roo to her and she smiled.

"Do you promise to stay right here while I get someone?" Rollie asked.

Another nod and she hugged the toy to her.

"Okay, I'll be back soon." He smiled to her and stood.

Espying a guard he went over and spoke to him. The man came back and knelt before the child.

"Can you tell me your name?"

The girl hugged the animal tighter.

" 'e can help ya find your parents." Rollie said in 'Boomer's' voice.

She looked at the stuffed animal a moment then very softly whispered 'Katie'.

"Katie Edmunds?"

She nodded.

The guard stood and spoke into his shoulder unit.

"What's going on?" Angie asked softly, rejoining Rollie.

"She's lost."

"Your parents will be here real soon." The guard assured the child then turned to them. "She wandered off half-an-hour ago, we've been looking for her."

Angie smiled at her husband.

"What?"

"Maybe you really were put on this earth to do heroic deeds."

"KATIE!!!!"

"MOMMY!" Katie squealed dropping 'Boomer' and running to her mother where she was picked up and held tightly.

Rollie scooped up 'Boomer' and turned around.... where he came face to face with the man they had talked to in the rollercoaster line.

"You found my little girl?" Frank Edmunds asked in grateful surprise.

"I....I didn't really find her....she was by the carousel and no one seemed to be keeping an eye on her so I wondered if she was lost and told the guard." Rollie shrugged.

"Thank you." The Navy Lieutenant shook his hand vigorously.

"You're welcome, I'm glad she's all right." Rollie nodded and smiled at the girl.

"Bye 'Boomer'." Katie waved shyly.

Rollie waved 'Boomer's' paw back.

"If you're out this way again, look us up, we'll take you two out to dinner." The officer handed him a card then shook his hand again before they departed.

Angie kissed his cheek.

"What was that for?"

"For being you. Maybe that was your Dreaming. Katie could have been the gazelle and the wolves could have been the people in the park."

"Maybe..." He replied thoughtfully.

"What do you say to hitting the road and getting a good night's sleep before going to St. Paul and beyond?" She asked.

"Sounds like a plan sheila." 'Boomer' answered.

Angie laughed and they drove to Madison where the trio settled in for a good sleep.

Chapter Five

Rollie and Angie woke late and ate a leisurely breakfast. They technically had four days to reach Bismarck and stay on their time table. It would take a few hours to get from Madison to St.Paul and less than eight to reach Bismarck so they decided to make it a very relaxing drive.

Angie had downloaded pictures from the Toledo to Madison leg after breakfast and was now driving on I-94 west toward St. Paul.

"There's an e-mail from Francis, 'thanking us for the pictures from day 1.....Sarah loved the shots of the trees and mountains of Pennsylvania.....the girls love having Chiops and he's settling in just fine'. He may not want to come back to the loft by the time we get home. It's possible he won't even remember you." Rollie kidded her.

"Okay, just for that..." She said under her breath.

Rollie had to hold on as the van made a sharp right turn. "What are you doing?" He called.

"I saw a sign for a winter carnival and we are going, pal!"

"How can they call it a winter carnival when it's not even winter yet?" He asked.

"Check the temp., love."

Rollie glanced at the external temperature and his mouth fell open. "Twenty-four degrees!"

"Glad I had the foresight to bring our winter coats?"

"I would have driven on by." He retorted.

"You still would have had to stop for gas, which we're low on again, by the way."

"Now I know why they gave us seven grand." He sighed as Angie pulled into a station.

Rollie found his heavy coat and pumped the gas while Angie used the bathroom.

A car, with music blaring pulled in and four teenagers got out and went inside the store.

"All yours." Angie said coming back and handing him the key to the men's room which she requested upon taking the women's key back inside.

"Thanks." He nodded and went to the bathroom.

She climbed into the van and started it to warm it up while she waited. She watched the teenagers pile back into their car and shook her head. They had tried to buy beer but the clerk refused and Angie hoped they didn't go somewhere else and get it and risk becoming a danger to other drivers.

"Let's hit the carnival, Mrs. Tyler." Rollie grinned, joining her as he rubbed his hands. "Ya did bring gloves too, didn't ya?"

"Outer pocket of the suitcases." She nodded buckling her seatbelt.

Rollie located the gloves and tossed hers to her before settling into the passenger seat where he belted himself in then pulled his own on.

"You're in a good mood." She commented as they pulled away.

"It's not just a job, it's an adventure."

"You going to enlist?" She snorted.

"Private Rollie Tyler reporting as ordered, Left-tenant."

"That's it," she chuckled, "you'd never be off KP if you called them 'Left-tenants'."

"I wonder what my career would have been like if I'd enlisted back home." He said thoughtfully.

"Ordinance Master, you have a natural talent for blowing things up." She snickered.

"You're gonna pay for that!"

"I suppose you and your army are going to get me." She replied and pulled into the parking lot.

They held hands as they looked at the ice sculptures and Angie pointed to an ice castle.

"Would you like me to build you an ice castle?" He asked sincerely.

"You would, wouldn't you?" She smiled back.

"Whatever you want angel."

"Well an ice castle is nice, but it has its drawbacks." She answered seriously.

"Like?"

"Melting when we made love the first time in it."

Rollie laughed and hugged her as they walked on.

After a while Angie shivered and Rollie got them hot chocolate which she gratefully accepted.

"Mmm....this is nice and warm."

"I can make you warm too." Rollie whispered in her ear.

"We have to find a hotel first." She smiled back.

"No worries." He replied and they walked to the parking lot where he took the driver's seat.

"About four miles west." Angie consulted the PDA.

Rollie nodded and headed that way.

"What the....?" He frowned looking in the rearview mirror as he drove.

"Rol?" Angie asked.

"We've got a car alongside ----" He was cut off by screams and hollers.

"They were the ones trying to buy beer at the gas station." She said concerned.

"If they've been drinking....."

"I'll call the highway patrol." She nodded.

Rollie glanced over and was rewarded with a glimpse of bare bottom. He kept his eyes straight on the road then, grateful he never acted like that. The teen's were hollering and gesturing but he wouldn't look.

"Okay, patrol's on its way."

"Good ------GET OVER! GET OVER!" He shouted and hit the brakes upon seeing a delivery truck in the oncoming lane.

They watched in horror as the teenagers swerved to avoid the truck and plowed through a field where there was a splash as the car stopped.

Rollie clamored out of the van and ran toward them, dumping his coat and gloves as he dove into the water. He reached the passenger door and pulled, thankfully it was unlocked and he grabbed the girl and swam to the surface, where to his surprise someone took her allowing him to go back down where he retrieved another female from the back seat and again took her to the surface where, he presumed the same person took her from him. The Aussie's strength was being drained by the icy water but he went under a third time, vaguely hearing Angie's calls to him, and tried the driver's side but the door was stuck so he had no choice but to leave him and try and rescue the other passenger in the back seat. It was a boy and he struggled to the surface exhaustedly and gave a last push and broke the surface gasping for air where not only was the boy taken from him, he himself was hauled out of the water.

"One more." He panted.

"We have divers in the water." The sheriff's deputy replied and wrapped a blanket around him then led him to an ambulance.

"I....I'm okay." He replied through chattering teeth.

Angie sat beside him holding his coat and gloves.

"I need to know what happened." The deputy said.

They filled him in with him asking a few questions before closing his book.

"Sounds pretty cut and dried."

"How are they?" Angie asked.

"On their way to the hospital." He shrugged.

"Let's get you to the hospital sir, make sure you don't have early hypothermia." The medic said.

"No, I'm okay."

"I really advise ----"

"Look, I'm fine."

"I can't force you to go...." the medic frowned, "keep a close eye on him, if he seems drowsy, mentally confused, his skin has a pallor....get him to a hospital."

"I will." Angie nodded.

"About the news people....." Rollie frowned as they started to arrive.

"I'll take care of them and you folks can be on your way."

Angie got Rollie to the van once the coast was clear and she drove them to the hotel, ordering him to remain in the warm van as she checked them in. She drove around to their room and started the shower for him, then helped him get the wet clothes off and into the warm water. While he was warming up she retrieved their luggage, pulling out his boxers and sweat's and placing them on the counter in the bathroom and changed into her own pajamas as well.

Rolie stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around his waist and smiled upon seeing the warm bed clothes. He dried off quickly and put them on, feeling better as he exited the bathroom rubbing his hair. "Any news?" He asked, joining Angie on the bed.

She pointed to the report just beginning and they listened as the newswoman said one of the tee's died and that the other three were in stable condition. They spoke to the driver of the delivery truck who told them it was another man (Rollie of course) who pulled the three out. He stated that that man was a hero.

Angie turned it off and dried Rollie's hair in silence.

He closed his eyes as she did this, allowing his mind to replay the events.....knowing he did his best.

"I'm tired, let's go to bed." She said handing him the towel and climbing under the covers.

He took the towel to the bathroom and turned out the light then joined her.

After a moment of staring at the ceiling he rolled over and put an arm around her. "Are you angry with me?"

"When I saw your face the second time you came up.....I wasn't sure you were going to make it a third time.....that scared me. I might be a grown woman, but that doesn't mean I don't get scared."

"I'm sorry."

She turned to him and touched his face. "I love you and I know you can't promise you won't jump in again to save someone but could you try to only do something like tonight every once-in-a-while."

He smiled tenderly at her then gave her a gentle kiss. "I'll do my best."

She snuggled closer and they fell asleep, exhausted.

Chapter Six

The couple ate a big breakfast, having skipped dinner the night before, for obvious reasons.

The newspaper had the tragic events as their front page story, where Rollie was identified as "a good samaritan" who had pulled several of the kids from the water.

The Aussie was thankful they were expected to make a full recovery and said a silent prayer for the one who he couldn't save.

They decided to drive through to Bismarck since it was less than eight hours away.

After picking up some sandwiches and water they hit the road again.

Angie e-mailed the Gattis and posted pictures from the winter carnival but made no mention of what followed their trip there.

"Frank passed along a 'hi' from Mira. They're working on a case where the victim was killed with...snake poison." She reported.

"Certainly makes the killer unique." Rollie replied. "Got a stranded driver, I'm gonna see if I can help."

"Right behind you."

Rollie pulled the van behind the car on the shoulder, got out and walked to it, knocking on the window he smiled at the young woman. "What's the problem?"

She looked back frightened and he softened his smile.

"If you tell me, maybe I can fix it."

"It just stopped....I can't get it started again." She replied through the closed window.

"Pop the hood." He requested and went to the front of the car.

"Hi." Angie said smiling at the girl. "I'm Angie, that's my husband Rollie, if it's fixable Rol will get you back on the road soon."

"Your fan belts completely shot." He said holding it up for her to see. "I'm gonna see if I have one in the van."

"What kind of van is that?" She asked, lowering the window a crack, seeing the extra equipment on the top.

"Our mobile fx shop." Angie replied, smiling at the memory of all the time he put into making it an fx shop on wheel.

"Fx shop?"

"Special effects. It's what we do."

"Like movies?" She asked and got a nod. "What kind of movies?"

"All sorts. Earth Doom, Fallen Knight, Red Storm, White Light -----"

"I loved that one!"

"It was one of our favorites too." Angie smiled fondly.

"Don't have a belt that size." Rollie reported rejoining them. "You call a tow already?"

"My cells dead. My dad tells me to remember to recharge it for emergencies......I always forget."

Angie pulled the PDA out of her pocket and looked up tow companies and called for one.

"What is that?" The girl asked wide-eyed.

"Personal Digital Assistant. We use it for all kinds of stuff." Rollie replied.

"They're on the way." Angie said.

"Good, now let's get back into the van where it's warm." Rollie nodded rubbing his hands together.

"Come on, you can't stay in your car, it's too cold out here." Angie motioned to her.

"I....."

"We won't hurt you." Rollie gave her a sincere smile.

"If you were in trouble, Rol's the one to have with you. He's a veritable Eagle Scout."

Rollie nodded, bouncing up and down, which made the girl giggle a little. She slowly opened the door, clutching her purse close and followed them to the van.

The couple was careful to keep their distance, sitting in the front seats while she took the back one.

"What does all this stuff do?"

"Some of it controls the movements of an actor's prosthetic mask, some for pyrotechnic devices." Rollie shrugged.

"How did you get into all this?"

"My dad owned the business so I come by it naturally. Rol was a stuntman who my dad hired as an apprentice upon suggestion of a friend. When my dad died he left it to Rol."

"Ange and I are partners in every way." Rollie smiled at his wife.

"What is it you do?" Angie asked, slipping her hand into Rollie's.

"I'm in college."

"Have a major yet?" Rollie asked.

"No." She sighed.

"Tow's here." Angie said.

"Thanks for everything.....if you come back this way, look me up. Lisa Rogers, anyone can tell you where my parents live." She smiled and exited the van.

"Wonder what she meant?" Rollie asked puzzled.

Angie shrugged as they watched the car loaded onto the flat bed truck.

Lisa waved and climbed into the tow truck.

Rollie followed them to the exit where they parted ways.

"I'm glad we're the ones who found her."

"I am too sweetie."

After a meal on the road they pulled into Bismarck at 6:30 where they found a motel and had a pizza delivered as they settled in to watch some television.

"I don't like this Ange....there's a snowstorm heading this way." He frowned seeing the local weather report.

"It's a twelve hour drive to Helena." Angie replied, consulting the PDA.

"That storm is supposed to hit at noon....if we leave here by seven, we can make it half-way there, if the forecasters are on target."

"I'll find someplace to lay-over if necessary."

Rollie nodded as he munched on the pizza and drank his pop.

"Okay, I've got a few places, we'll just have to decide depending on the weather."

"Come on." He said standing.

"What?" She asked confused.

He handed her a pamphlet he'd found on the bedside table.

"Ice skating?" Angie read with doubt in her voice.

Her husband was not an ice skater.

"They have a lot more than that......dozens of vendors, a laser show at dark, musical acts....let's go and have a good time tonight."

They headed to the park where Angie spotted a vendor with hot chestnuts and Rollie bought a bag which helped to keep the chill off. They came upon a band playing jazz and he wrapped his arms around her as they swayed to the music.

"We should get something extra for the girls for watching Chiops." She said when the musicians took a break.

Walking around they found t-shirts that looked like laser pictures so they purchased three different ones then bought some hot cocoa as the laser display started.

"That's us sweetie." He breathed as laser eagles took flight.

They stayed for the whole show and returned to the motel at eleven where they changed into pajamas and snuggled together in bed.

"G'night Ange." Rollie said wrapping his arms around her.

"Night Rol." She sighed in reply and closed her eyes drifting into a peaceful slumber.

Chapter Seven

Rollie frowned as the windshield wipers brushed the snowflakes away.

"I hope this holds off for at least a few more hours." Angie said putting a piece of muffin in her mouth then pulled a piece off and fed Rollie.

"So do I." He nodded swallowing it.

An hour later they were moving at a snail's pace as a whiteout hit them.

"The exit's another quarter mile." Angie informed him.

Rollie glanced over and saw red and blue flashing lights.

'Please follow me, I'll lead you to the Border States rest area.' They heard over the loud speakers of the police truck.

Rollie flashed his lights to indicate he understood and the truck pulled in front of them.

It was slow going but eventually they pulled into the parking lot and hurried inside with the officer.

"Dee Dee, get these folks some coffee."

The older woman behind the counter nodded and retrieved cups and the pot.

"Thank you for the help." Rollie told the officer.

"The Governor requested we give you an assist."

"The Governor?" Angie asked puzzled.

"Yes, ma'am. You helped his daughter yesterday."

"Lisa Rogers ----"

"Is Governor Rogers' daughter." The officer nodded.

"No wonder she said anyone could tell us where her parents lived." Angie shook her head as she poured a bit of milk into her full cup.

"You folks take it easy and drive carefully when the storm lets up." The officer nodded then left.

Rollie glanced at the clock on the wall and sighed. It was still almost nine hours to Helena.

"See if there's lodging about five or six hours from here. If we can be back on the road by one...at normal speed limits....we'll only be three or four hours from Helena, we can get there by lunch tomorrow and not lose any time."

Angie nodded, already calling up the information.

"There's a hotel chain five hours away."

"We'll aim for that then." He said warming his hands over the cup.

Rollie watched as the trucker at the next table over paid his bill and headed out a short time later. He snagged the newspaper left behind and began reading it.

"Looks like the weather's let up a little. I'm gonna hit the bathroom then we can go."

"Okay, sweetie." He nodded looking out the window to see a much clearer sky.

Angie departed and he flipped through the paper glancing at the headlines. His mouth fell open at the one on the next page and he looked at the photo accompanying it.

"Being the son of a famous parent is never easy, now magnify that a thousand times and add the scrutiny of being a televangelist's son....that's what Daniel Cooper, son of Televangelist Cliff Cooper, has lived with since he was fifteen. This is his story, in his own words." Rollie read softly. He skipped down to see who wrote it and knitted his brow. Callie Pender?

"Ready?"

"Huh?" He looked up startled.

"What's wrong?" Angie asked.

"I'll tell you in the van." He answered folding up the paper and leaving five dollars for a tip and they departed.

".....that is why Daniel Cooper lost control in Las Vegas. Could any one of us cast a stone at him in his hour of grief? A terrible tragedy befell him and he responded in a very human way." Angie read aloud and put the paper down and took a deep breath.

"Okay sweetie?"

"I just.....I can empathize. When you died, I didn't want to go on, but you came back to me. I don't think anything would have mattered had you not survived." She answered tearing up.

"I want to visit him."

"I think we should. I still can't get over how much he looks like you."

"It was a little eerie when I opened the door of my room and saw him there. I wish I could find a connection, it's a bit unnerving."

"I've heard everyone has a twin, maybe you happened to find yours." Angie shrugged.

Rollie never really believed people had a look-alike in this world but seeing Daniel Cooper was clear proof that at least he did.

"Why don't you let me drive for a while?"

Rollie nodded and stopped at the gas station off the exit to fill the tank and trade places before heading on.

Angie hummed along to the CD as she drove. She had really wanted to meet this Daniel Cooper after Rollie returned from Hope Island and told her about him. Mostly it was curiosity to see just how much alike they were. Of course, no one could compare to Rol.... She recalled the feeling of shock upon checking Daniel out on the internet, seeing his resemblence to her then fiancé and she couldn't help but wonder what kind of man the minister was. Part of her figured he favored his mother because there was very little resemblence to Cliff Cooper, she did end up meeting Daniel in 'Frisco....that was a trip she tried to selectively forget, but Daniel, Alex and Dylan had been a pleasure to meet and she was glad for the chance to see them again.

Rollie logged onto the computer and saw Mira was on-line.

Hey! How's it goin' back at Midtown South?

Busy as usual. Frank said he posted to you about the snake poisoning case. Any thought's?

Determine the snake type?

The victim was a diplomatic envoy from Africa ------ the venom was from a Northeast African Carpet Viper. It must have been put into his food or drink.

So you're tracking an assassin. Anyone with an m.o. like in the Feds' cases?

F.B.I. is a blank.

Somebody new.....and vicious.

Very.

This kind of m.o. they're bound to send up a red flag next time.

Yeah....next time. So how's the long haul going?

Fine. We've had some interesting adventures. Frank's got the pictures.

Gotta go, V.D.'s on the warpath again.

No worries. See you when we get back.

Not if I see you first!

A sense of humor, didn't know you had one!

I'll get you for that! TTYL.

Rollie logged off and went to the passenger seat and buckled in.

"Just talked to Mira."

"How is she?"

"Stumped on the snake poisoning case. The venom was from a snake native to the envoy's home country."

"Times like this I'm glad we're in the movie business."

"Me too sweetie, me too."

It was snowing again by the time Angie pulled into the parking lot and they checked into the room.

"Rol, we don't have to stay in a motel while we're in Seattle do we?" Angie sighed dropping her luggage onto the bed.

"Nope, Kenny is renting several houses for the company."

"Good, we can put down roots for a few months."

Rollie hugged her.

"How about dinner at the restaurant around the corner?" He asked.

"Sounds good, I'm famished."

They bundled up and hurried to the small but clean restaurant where they were promptly seated.

"The grilled chicken salad looks good." Angie said perusing the menu.

"That does sound good." He nodded.

"What can I get you folks to drink?"

"I'll take a white wine." Angie answered.

"Coffee." Rollie added and she went to get it.

"So what are the houses like that Kenny is renting?"

"He said to call when we get in and he'll give us the addresses." Rollie shrugged.

"I hope he doesn't pile us forty deep." She replied and placed her hand on his, "And that he sees fit to give us our own room."

"We'll just have to enact that clause in our contract."

"What clause?" She asked puzzled.

"The one that says newlyweds get their own room." He smiled at her.

"I must have missed that in reading the contract...... but I like it." She smiled back.

Rollie chuckled as the waitress arrived.

"Here we are," She said placing the drinks before them, "do you need a few more minutes to decide?"

"Nope, we'll both have the grilled chicken salad." Angie answered.

"Okay, then." She nodded, writing it down and heading for the kitchen.

"If we're going to spend the night in Helena tomorrow maybe we could do something there."

"Wonder if they have an arcade?" Rollie smiled.

They ate and returned to their room where they watched a movie titled 'FX' with fellow Aussie Bryan Brown and were compelled to compare it to their own lives, with frightening similarity.

The film ran up until the news, which they watched, then they turned in for some sleep.

Chapter Eight

They reached Helena at 1:30 and after checking into a room at the motel they headed to the mall they had seen on the way into the city.

Once they finished lunch at the food court they walked around, browsing in several shops, ultimately picking up a gift for Mira in a handmade crafts store.

"Oh! Ange look!" He pointed as they started down a side corridor.

A rock tower stood thirty feet away and people were climbing up it.

"You want to do that, don't you?" She smirked.

He grinned at her.

"Go on!" She smacked his backside.

He slipped his coat off and handed it to her and she watched as he paid for the privilege to climb and expertly slipped into the harness and skillfully climbed, his height giving him a distinct advantage.

"It's okay Courtney, just climb back down."

The girl, maybe about ten, shook her head vehemently and clung fearfully to the tower.

Angie watched as Rollie carefully made his way over to the girl and spoke to her, a few moments later they were coming down together.

"Thank you." Courtney's father said to Rollie as he hugged his daughter.

Rollie nodded and removed his harness then took his coat back from Angie and they began walking again.

"What did you say to her?"

"I told her to pretend they were monkey bars."

Angie chuckled and hugged him.

"Hey, I saw an arcade upstairs...." She grinned.

They spent another two hours playing games then ate at the mall's restaurant before heading back to the motel.

"From here to Seattle is almost eleven hours." Angie said consulting the PDA.

"We're four days ahead of schedule....see if there's a place to spend the night along the way that will be relaxing."

"There's a bed and breakfast in Alberton...listen to this....'relax in the early 1900's atmosphere. A historic railroad hotel to a modern country inn. Eight rooms, private baths. Full breakfast accompanied by harp music.' They have whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking and hunting. $50--$90 dollars a night."

"Sounds like a nice place....call and see if they have a room."

She hit the phone icon as he went to the bathroom.

I wonder if the have a large tub or shower? He mused as he glanced at the one person stall. It certainly sounds like a place for a little romance...

'We have three room's available, all in the $75 dollar range.' Rollie heard as he came back out.

"Great, we'd like to book one."

'Registry name?'

"Mr. and Mrs. Roland Tyler."

'T...Y...L...E...R...?'

"Yes."

'Credit card number?'

Rollie pulled their travel card out and handed it to her and she read the number off it.

'How long will you be staying?'

"Just one night."

'You're reservation is confirmed. Check-in is at 2 p.m., check-out 11 a.m. We'll see you tomorrow Ms. Tyler.'

"Thank you." Angie replied and hung up.

"Let's see what comes after Alberton." Rollie said as she handed the card back.

"Spokane, then Seattle. Spokane has 'Pigout in the park', a five day restaurant and music fair. We'll make the last two days."

"Hmm...food, music and you, what more could a man want?"

"You're so romantic Mr. Tyler." She laughed and kissed him. "I'm going to take a shower." She said and went into the bathroom.

Rollie waited for the water to start then picked up the PDA with a grin.

"You ain't seen nothin' romantic yet Mrs. Tyler."

Chapter Nine

"There it is! 'Treasure State Bed & Breakfast'."

Rollie took the turn-off and drove down the driveway. They parked and carried their luggage up the steps of the wooden porch.

"May I help you?" The man behind the desk asked.

"We're the Tylers----" Angie began.

"Ah! Yes, please follow me." He nodded and led them upstairs and unlocked the door to their room. "Here we are...."

The first thing Angie noticed was the brass bed adorned with a wedding ring quilt. The rest of the furniture was white, with the walls painted a pale yellow making it bright in the room.

"It's beautiful." She replied and smelled the yellow roses, which happened to be her favorite, in a vase on the dresser.

"Glad you like it. I'm Todd Culver by the way, my wife Beverly and I own this inn. If you need anything just let us know." He nodded and placed their key on the dresser before departing.

Angie went into the bathroom to look around.

"Hey Rol,they have a wash basin and pitcher....along with a tub with glass shower doors." She chuckled.

"'Case you're not that quaint." He replied. "Let's go for a hike, it's a beautiful day and a sweater would probably be enough."

"Okay." She smiled coming out of the bathroom.

They walked through the woods for over an hour, listening to the birds sing, the insects go about preparing for the upcoming winter, just enjoying nature.

"Look Rol! Bunnies! They're so cute!"

"Yeah....cute."

"Sorry, I forgot."

European rabbits were a scourge to Australia, causing the extinction of over 15 native species of wildlife and resulting in large losses financially to agriculture.

"Look at the eagle Rol." She whispered and pointed at the tree branch.

They watched as it took flight and Rollie wrapped his arms around her.

"Beautiful." The Aussie murmured.

"It's so majestic." She nodded.

Rollie took a deep breath of clean air and smiled.

This is what it's all about Ange."

"I love you Rol." She replied turning.

"I love you sweetie." He answered and they kissed.

"I think I saw some bubble bath on the edge of the tub...."

"Wonder how fast we can get back?"

"Let's find out." Angie laughed and they walked quickly to the inn and to their room.

"You start the bath, I'll put out the 'Do Not Disturb' sign."

"You got it 'boss'." Angie smiled and went into the bathroom where she removed her sweater after starting the water and pouring the soap in then swished it around.

Rollie joined her and they undressed each other then climbed into the tub and Angie turned the water off then they washed each other and made love.

"That was great sweetie." He murmured leaning against the back of the tub.

"It sure was." She agreed leaning against him. "The water's cold now though....and our bubbles are gone."

"That's okay, the exercise we got today has made me famished."

"Which one? The walk or.....?"

"Or. Definitely the or." He grinned.

Angie stood and climbed out of the tub wrapping a robe around herself then held the other out to him.

"You'd better eat now because there's more 'or' waiting for you."

He stood and donned the robe then let the water out.

"Guess we'd better find some place to eat so I can rebuild my stamina." He smiled back.

"I don't really want to go out to eat but I guess there's no choice." She sighed.

Rollie opened the door and led her into the bedroom.....where a cart with two covered plates and a hurricane lamp sat surrounded by a couple of chairs.

"The brochure didn't say.....oh.....Rol.....you did this?" She turned to him tearfully.

" Happy 'just because I love you Angela Tyler' Day." He grinned and handed her a rose.

"The roses too?"

Rollie nodded and she hugged him tightly.

"This is wonderful. What did they bring?" She asked releasing him.

"Grilled steak, steamed veggies and rolls. Oh! And a bottle of wine." He answered.

"You're so good to me." She kissed him.

"I wanted to make this a romantic night." He smiled and seated her.

They ate then Rollie put the things in the hall and he and Angie made love again.

"Night Rol." She mumbled drifting off in his arms afterward.

"G'night love." He whispered and soon fell asleep himself.

Chapter Ten

The eagle circled above the gazelle that was surrounded by wolves. Their eyes met and the eagle could see the gazelle's resignation as the wolves bared their teeth.

Rollie blinked and shivered as the water washed over him from the shower. He turned it off and stepped out absently.

It must not have been Katie....

"Morning." Angie hugged him from behind startling him slightly. "I'll get a shower then we can have breakfast before we leave."

"Sounds good." He smiled and left her to shower while he dressed.

Moving to the window once he was clothed he began puzzling out the Dreaming.

Angie wrapped the towel around her then exited the bathroom.

"Brrr." She said hurrying across the floor barefoot. "I think it's a day for a sweater....unless you want to keep me warm." She grinned pulling her underclothes from her suitcase.

She turned when there was no reply.

"Earth to Rollie Tyler." She teased then walked over to him and placed a concerned hand on his arm. "Rol?"

"Hey....nice towel." He smiled looking her up and down.

"What's wrong?" She asked seriously.

"I had the Dreaming about the gazelle again." He sighed.

"What do you think it means?"

"I don't know. Let's go to breakfast, maybe it will help clear it up with a full stomach."

She dressed quickly and helped him put the bags in the van then they sat down at a table after filling their plates.

"Did you folks have a good night?" Beverly asked with a knowing smile.

"Very. Thank you for everything." Angie smiled.

"Thank your husband. Hold on to him honey, men like him are hard to come by." She replied patting Rollie's shoulder making him blush.

"Morning." Todd said joining them.

They nodded back smiling.

"Ask you a question?"

"Sure mate."

"What does FX stand for?" He asked then nodded toward the window, where their van could be seen, for clarity.

"Special effects. Ange and I do it for the movies."

"On your way to a job?" Beverly asked.

"In Seattle." Angie nodded.

"Long ways from New York." She replied having seen their plates. "We had a movie shot in Alberton once....a lot of waiting."

"I was an extra." Todd grinned.

"He had to sit at a table for hours." Beverly chuckled.

"The end of my acting days." Todd sighed.

"Mostly the waiting comes for the actors while everything in the scene is set up, which keeps us non-actors busy." Rollie smiled.

"What kind of fx do you do? Explosions?"

"Yeah, along with some make-up and scenes where someone's floating and lots of other things too. It's all under the umbrella of fx." Rollie answered him.

"Oh! There's that bird watcher group, they're early. I'd better get your room and some of the others cleaned up so they can check-in on time." Beverly said seeing the bus pull up.

"I'd better get to the desk. It was nice having you folks here." Todd smiled at them.

"You were wonderful hosts and thank you again for helping with the plans." Rolie stood and shook his hand.

"Come back any time. It's nice to see two people as much in love as Todd and I are." Beverly nodded and the couple hurried off to attend to their chores.

"I like them Rol."

"So do I."

They finished breakfast and were on their way by ten a.m.

"Next stop, Spokane, Washington." Angie said as they got onto the highway.

"Is is Spocane or Spocan?" He asked.

"Don't know, you'll have to ask when we get there."

"Me? Why don't you ask?"

"You're Australian, they won't scoff at you."

Rollie laughed at the thought of anyone scoffing at Angie.....and what she might do to them if they did.

"Oh, Rol, look.....it's a hurt dog." She pointed.

The Aussie pulled the van over under the cloudy sky and moved to the back where he put his work gloves on and removed a muzzle from a drawer before exiting the van. He approached the animal slowly, speaking in aborigine and slipped the muzzle over its mouth and nose. He carefully hefted the animal into his arms and took it back to the van.

"I put towels down by the make-up stand." Angie called from the front. "There's an animal clinic a few miles from here." She added pulling back onto the highway.

Rollie continued talking to the animal in Australia's native tongue the whole way there and he carefully picked up the animal once they reached their destination.

The receptionist looked up and hurried into the back and a few minutes later she returned with another woman.

"I'm Dr. Jantz. Is that a pet?"

"We found it along the highway, looks like it's been shot in the leg." Rollie replied, ignoring her tone.

"Bring it back here." She motioned for them to follow through a door marked private. "It was very dangerous for you to approach it, it could have tried to attack you." She said removing a syringe from the cabinet and filling it with a liquid from a bottle in another cabinet. Rollie placed the animal where she pointed and she injected it.

"Will its leg be okay?" Angie asked.

"I don't know." She shook her head looking at it. "Get Charlie, he can assist." She told the receptionist who nodded and left the room.

"We'll get out of your way." Angie said and gently pulled Rollie's arm.

"Look, I'm sorry I was short with you. You really shouldn't have approached it though, it was very dangerous. Next time call the police or animal control, they're more equipped to handle things."

"Understood." Rollie replied then motioned to her computer. "Could you let us know how it is?"

"Sure." She nodded and handed him a tablet to write on.

He put their e-mail addy on the paper and handed it back as another man entered.

"Another coyote? Looks like a buckshot. Hunting season is open again." The man sighed.

"Let's get to work." Dr. Jantz said and the receptionist escorted the Tylers out of the room.

"That was a coyote?!?" Angie choked as they climbed into the van.

"Yeah, it was sweetie."

"If had known that I would have never let you near it!"

"I've dealt with wild animals before Ange and so have you."

"Yeah but, not wild, injured, coyotes!"

"Guess they don't have those in the city huh?" Rollie replied trying not to smile.

"No, just two legged beasts." She muttered.

Rollie hugged her with a laugh then started the van. "Let's get going."

They stopped for lunch several hours later then reached Spokane at 4:30, checked into the motel and went to 'Pig out in the park', where they enjoyed an array of food and great music and ended up staying until closing.

Chapter Eleven

Angie pointed and grinned.

"The Seattle Space Needle... built in 1962 to serve as the official site of the World's Fair that year." He said.

"How do you know these things?!?"

He shrugged, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"You looked it up!" She punched him in the arm.

"When we stopped for gas and you used the restroom." He burst out laughing.

"You are so busted!" She joined him.

"Give Kenny a call, see where renter's row is."

She reached the producer on his cell phone and got directions which Rollie followed and soon pulled into the driveway of a two story house, where a woman was waiting.

"Hi! I'm Jenny Silver." The perky redhead greeted. "If you want to get your things I'll open the house."

Rollie retrieved the luggage while Angie followed her inside.

"There are three sofa beds on the lower level. The dining table seats six, you could probably squeeze in ten. The laundry room is through that door there." She pointed to the back of the kitchen then ushered Angie back into the hall and up the stairs.

Angie rolled her eyes at Rollie as he came in and followed them. The Aussie deposited their luggage at the top of the stairs and they checked each of the four bedrooms, deciding on the medium sized one for themselves, he took the luggage inside then they all went back downstairs.

"If you need anything, here's my card." The redhead said giving it to Rollie, who swallowed a snort of laughter upon reading it. ' Silver Spurs Reality....no rental is too big for our boots.'

"Thank you." Angie nodded and led her to the door.

"Kenny said there would be a number of people coming in the next few weeks so I expect I'll be seeing you again soon."

"Undoubtedly." Rollie answered.

"Since you're the first ones here I'll leave the keys with you and be on my way." She said and departed.

"So....what shall we do?" Angie smiled at him.

"Hmm...." Rollie feigned thought.

"SPACE NEEDLE!" They said unison.

Rollie pulled the van into the parking lot and paid the $8.00 fee.

He'd have let valet service do it but the van was his business and apart from Angie there were few he'd let behind the wheel.

"It says here there's a carnival midway at the base of the needle."

"As long as there are no coasters ." He muttered.

Angie grinned at him as she turned the pda off and stowed it. They locked up, set the alarm and headed for the ticket booth, where Rollie plunked down the $22 dollars to ride the elevator to the observation deck.

"What a view." She enthused.

Rollie nodded in agreement and they stood there a while just looking around at the beauty of the city then browsed at the displays.

They were hungry so they had dinner at the Skycafe where they watched the view as the restaurant revolved a full 360 degrees.

Angie took several pictures and the waitress graciously offered to take a few of them together.

The revolution took an hour and they stayed the whole time just to tell everyone they had.

The couple returned to the base of the needle and enjoyed the midway and picked up a few souvenirs.

It was almost eleven when they returned to the house where they put on pajamas and crawled into bed tiredly with plans to see Pike Place Market and Deception Pass tomorrow.

Chapter Twelve

Rollie found the fridge and cupboards stocked and smiled. He scrambled eggs while Angie dressed.

"Smells good." She said coming into the kitchen.

"It's almost done. Pour the coffee?"

She grabbed two paper cups off the counter and did so as he loaded eggs and toast onto paper plates.

"Sure was nice of Kenny to supply us with groceries." She said as they ate.

"I was a bit surprised." He nodded.

"Maybe he took pity on us for our cross-country trek."

Rollie shrugged as Angie looked through the paper they liberated a few days ago.

"Look at this Snoopy cartoon." She chuckled.

Rollie leaned over and smiled at it.

"Ange, can we go see Daniel tomorrow?"

Seeing the paper had reminded him of his 'twin'.

"Of course we can." She smiled.

They finished eating then cleaned up and grabbed their coats to head for the van and a day of sightseeing.

Rollie was just backing out of the driveway when he heard honking.

"Bloody hell!" He swore and put it in park then climbed out.

"Look's like you were right you old conger! 'e said my kids were here!" Dingo Tyler grinned at his son as he and Mangela exited the Cadillac.

Rollie hugged them both as Angie stood by shaking her head.

"Not that I'm not glad to see ya, but what kind of trouble are ya in? " Rollie asked eyeing them.

"No trouble son." His father replied.

"No worries sonnyboy." The aborigine added.

Rollie stared at them hard then sighed.

"So where are you and Angiegirl headed?" Mangela asked.

Rollie glanced at Angie who nodded slightly.

"Pikes Place Market and Deception Pass, you wanna come?"

"What'd ya say old coot?"

"A hardy walkabout." Mangela nodded.

"Why don't you follow us....in case Kenny calls and we have to leave." Angie suggested.

"Good idea." Rollie nodded.

He and Angie returned to the van while Dingo and Mangela unhooked Dingo's ever-present trailer in front of the house.

"I still can't believe they're here." Rollie shook his head.

"I hate to say this Rol, but where they go...trouble usually follows."

"I know and I truly hope it hasn't this time." He sighed and checked the mirror to make sure they were following.

"Okay, so what are you two doing here?" Rollie asked as they sat down to lunch.

"I was in Sacramento when he shows up outside my trailer. Don't know how the bloody hell he does that!" Dingo shook his head.

Rollie looked at the man who had been like a father to him growing up.

"I was visiting you when I had a Dreamin' tellin' me youse was here." Mangela shrugged.

"You swear you're not in any trouble? If you are spit it out now!"

"We swear, on your mum's grave, there's no trouble son."

Rollie nodded, knowing his father would never swear on his mother's grave unless he meant it....or else.

"So, another hour here then onto Deception Pass?" Angie asked.

"Reckon!" Rollie grinned.

Rollie pulled over and he and Angie exited the van just past the end of the Deception Pass bridge.

"Wow!" He uttered looking around. "There are a lot of amazing places in America."

"Probably just as many in Australia." She smiled slipping her arm around his waist.

"Lot of green, eh Mangela?" Dingo replied as they joined the couple.

"Not like home." He agreed.

"There's no place like home." Rollie replied.

"And here I forgot to pack my ruby slippers." Angie grinned.

All three men looked at her blankly.

"You know? Dorohy? Toto? The Wizard of Oz?"

Nothing.

"I don't think we're in Kansas anymore." She muttered.

"I'll get you my pretty....and your little dog too." Rollie whispered in her ear then grunted when she elbowed him in the side.

"Maybe we'd better get going before she decides to throw him off the bridge." Dingo loudly whispered to Mangela.

"They wouldn't send my death benefits to her in the slammer."

"I wouldn't need them in the slammer." Angie retorted.

"Better quit now son." Dingo laughed.

"I humbly grovel at your feet my wonderful wife."

"Grovel yourself to the van and let's get going."

He laughed and kissed then they headed to the van.

Their next stop was at Oak Harbor Park where Rollie walked over to the monument.

"What does it say?" Angie asked snapping pictures.

"Basically that in 1792 Joseph Whidbey, of the HMS Discovery, sailed through here proving Deception Pass wasn't a small bay, as the Spaniard's had said, but was actually a deep and turbulent channel.... thus the name 'Deception Pass'."

"You have some antacid in the van son, that lunch is comin' back on me."

"Uh yeah, try the firstaid kit."

Dingo nodded and went to the van where he located the kit easily and chewed a tablet.

"A paper....won't hurt to just look at the horses..."

"How about a hike sweetie?" Rollie asked.

"Let me get the video camera."

She climbed into the van and opened a drawer.

"Hey Dingo, you find that antacid?"

She looked up when he didn't answer.

"Oh....Daniel." She nodded.

"You know him?" Dingo asked wide-eyed.

"Yeah, but Rol knows him a lot better."

"I know who a lot better?" Rollie asked coming inside.

"Daniel." Angie replied going back to rummaging.

"Oh, yeah. I saw him a long time ago in New York. That was quite a shock I can tell ya. I came out here a while back and we officially met. He's a really great guy."

"He lives here?"

"Not here in Seattle, one of the islands."

"Aha! Found it!" Angie said holding the camera up.

"Come on dad, we're taking a walkabout." Rollie grinned and pulled him out the door.

Angie took several photos and video on their walk. After a while they sat down to enjoy the quiet beauty.

"How ya like it Mangela?" Rollie inquired.

"I 'ave to wear shoes here."

Rollie and Angie laughed at the face he made.

" 'kay dad?"

"Oh....uh.....yeah." Dingo nodded looking at the water.

Rollie gave Mangela a look and the aborigine shrugged.

"I'm gonna take more video." Angie said and moved off.

"Think I'll catch up to Angiegirl." Mangela replied and left father and son alone.

"What's wrong dad?" Rollie asked after a moment of silence.

"Nothin'."

"Dad---"

"Gonna see if I can find that old coot." Dingo said and left him there.

"Everything okay?" Angie asked.

"No, but he doesn't want to talk about it." Rollie sighed.

Angie rubbed his shoulders.

"That feels good sweetie."

"If we go back to the house I can make you feel even better." She whispered kissing his ear.

He got to his feet and they went to the van where he left a note on the Caddy to give the house a wide berth for the next few hours.

Rollie stretched and Angie kissed his chest.

"That was good love."

"Just good?"

"Okay, superbly magnificent." He grinned.

"That's quite a compliment. If you get me some nourishment I might be able to top it."

"If I want more lovin' I need to get you somethin' from the oven, huh?"

"I'd take ice cream."

"I could do somethin' with that." He waggled his eyebrows at her.

"Let me have a few bites first please." She smiled.

Rollie slipped out of bed and pulled his jeans on then headed downstairs to the kitchen where he checked the freezer and frowned.

"No ice cream." He reported going back upstairs where he put his shoes on.

"Where are you going?"

"Gotta keep my woman satisfied. Don't move a muscle."

"Not even this one?" She asked kissing him.

"Just that one." He smiled grabbing his shirt, jacket and keys.

He donned his shirt then slipped his jacket on and headed out the door to the van when he saw Dingo sitting in the car. He walked over and knocked on the window and his father unlocked the door.

"Talk to me dad." He requested climbing inside.

"He looks so much like you." Dingo uttered holding up the newspaper.

"Is that what's bothering you? The fact Daniel and I look alike?"

"I just....I can't get over it. You said you met him?"

"Yeah."

"I'd sure like to meet him, you think I could?"

"Ange and I were gonna visit him anyway." Rollie shrugged.

"Thanks son."

"I can show you the place I was thinkin' of buying too."

"A house out here?"

"Lighthouse cottage actually. It's a safe place if we need it. Of course Ange needs to approve of it."

"When can we go?"

"I'll call Alex in the morning and get Daniel's number."

"Alex?"

"She owns the local inn. Get some sleep, you look tired." Rollie squeezed his shoulder.

Dingo nodded and they climbed out with the older man retiring to his trailer.

Rollie sighed and climbed into the van.

"Hope he doesn't die from shock." He uttered starting the van to retrieve the ice cream.

Chapter Thirteen

Information for Hope fans: This series is entitled "Quaternion" (The meaning of which will be explained at a later time). This is an Alternate Universe story containing a cross-over between F/X: The Series and Hope Island, which I unfortunately own none of! Ultimately, other series will come into play and will be explained at such time, but for now these are the only two of importance. This is rated R from the beginning but since the Hope(rs) pick it up at chapter 13, this is a quick recap.....Rollie and Angie Tyler, special effects (FX) artists from New York have taken a cross-country trip to Seattle for a movie project, they've had many adventures along the way but these will pale in comparison to what is to come.

While Chapter 13 marks the first physical appearance of Daniel Cooper he was mentioned in chapters' 7 & 12.

Finally, I gratefully acknowledge Peggy and Maureen for allowing me to borrow from their writings, hopefully enriching my tale. Also to Monika for her assistance in part five which is now done and I am onto part six. (WHEW!!!!!!)

Okay, that's it for now,on to Chapter 13 of "Battered"....

"Battered"
Chapter 13

"Finish break----" Alex Stone started to say to her son Dylan, who ran for the door, when the phone rang.

"Hi Daniel! Bye Daniel!"

"Hey buddy." Daniel Cooper chuckled.

"You know what, he just walked in." Alex said handing him the phone.

"Hello?" Daniel asked giving her a puzzled look until he heard the voice on the other end. "Yeah, sure, that's fine. I'll be here all day. Okay, see you then."

"What'd Rollie have to say?" She asked taking the phone back.

"His father saw my picture, Callie's article. He wants to meet me so they're coming over for lunch. Oh! I need to get some groceries!"

"After breakfast." She pointed to the stool.

He smiled and sat down obediently.

Rollie Tyler felt the butterflies stirring in his stomach as the ferry drew closer to the island.

Please don't let dad freak when he sees Daniel.

They proceeded up the gangplank after docking and ran into Kevin Mitchum.

"Hey Rollie!" The cop grinned shaking his hand. "Welcome back!"

"Thanks, this is my wife Angie, my dad and our friend Mangela."

"Nice to meet you all. I'll tell you,the first time I saw this guy I thought he was Daniel!" Kevin laughed then grew wide eyed. "They do know about Daniel, don't they?"

"Yeah, we came to see him....you understand why..."

"Oh, sure." He nodded. "I saw him at the store about half-an-hour ago, he was headed back up the hill."

"Thanks, Kevin." He patted the cop's shoulder and led his family that way.

Bonita Vasquez was unloading boxes from the van when she looked up.

"Rollie?!?"

"Hi Bonita." He smiled and stopped.

"It's good to see you again and so nice you keep in touch with Daniel."

"Who are you-----Rollie! Daniel said you were coming." Ruby Vasquez hurried down the stairs smiling. "You must be Angie. He was very anxious to get home to you when he was here." The older woman said.

The blond opened her mouth startled then closed it, recalling this was basically a small town and everyone pretty much knew everyone else's business, as her husband proceeded to introduce everyone again.

They chatted for a few minutes with the women then started on their way again and were stopped by Father Mac, Nub Flanders and Brian Brewster before they finally got to the hill.

"He lives by the church." Mangela said thoughtfully.

"Daniel is the minister." Rollie nodded as he led them to the porch and knocked.

The door opened a moment later and Daniel Cooper stood smiling at them.

"It's good to see you two again, come on in." He said and stepped back.

They entered and he felt intense eyes upon him.

"Uh....I made sandwiches and coffee...."

"I'll give you a hand."

The Aussie followed him into the small kitchen.

"Thanks for doing this, it's strange for them, you know?"

"I understand Rollie." Daniel nodded and picked up the coffee while Rollie took the sandwiches to the livingroom.

"Turns out Daniel drinks black too." Rollie smiled as they sat.

"So, Mr. Tyler...I'm sure this is a shock, seeing how much I resemble your son. It was for me when we first met." Daniel smiled at Rollie.

"Yeah, I opened the door to my room and there's a mirror image of me standing there." Rollie chuckled.

Dingo nodded looking Daniel over.

"Did Rollie tell you he has an investment here?"

Dingo nodded, not taking his eyes off the minister.

"He helped Alex out a lot."

Dingo nodded again.

"Dad? Are you okay?"

"My God.....it's you!" Dingo blurted throwing his arms around Daniel shocking them all. "My baby boy is alive!" Dingo cried.

What do I do? Daniel thought as the man's tears fell onto his face.

"Mister Tyler----" He began, gently pushing the man away and standing. "I'm not your son....or Rollie's brother. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Cliff and Bonnie Cooper-----"

"No! You were born in Australia----I wasn't there the day you two were born. I never forgave myself for your mother going through that alone. The doctors said you were stillborn.....they wouldn't even let her see you, said you had been cremated.....she doted on you," he said turning to Rollie," but she never forgot her other baby boy. Neither did I and now I have you back." Dingo embraced Daniel.

"Mangela...." Rollie looked to him for help.

"Reckon white man's science can tell one way or another."

"Of course! A DNA test!" Angie said.

Daniel could see the plea in Rollie's eyes and he nodded.

"I'll call Dr. Watson." The minister said and pulled out of Dingo's grasp.

Rollie watched Dingo watch Daniel make the phone call and felt a pang.

>Daniel isn't my brother! The DNA test will prove it and Dingo will realize he only has one son! ME!

"Dr. Watson's on her way." Daniel said hanging up and turning to them.

"I have something for you." Dingo smiled and held out a charm on a chord. "I carried it with me most of your life, now it's yours. I have my twin sons again." He started to cry.

Angie frowned at her father-in-law. All his life all Rol ever wanted was his love but the old man was incapable of being a real father, now he's done a 180 with a man who just happen's to resemble his true son. Damn it Dingo! Look how much this is hurting Rollie!

"I need some air." Rollie mumbled and headed for the door with Angie on his heels.

Once outside the Aussie took a deep breath then broke down.

"God Ange, tell me this is just a dream and I'll wake up soon."

"You will Rol, when that DNA test proves Daniel is not your brother." She soothed.

Rollie straightened and wiped his eyes.

"I'm tired of this! I'm tired of being that little boy who still wants his father to be one to him!"

They heard a car and saw Dr. Watson pull up.

"Daniel filled me in. I need a DNA sample from the two of you." She said coming up to the porch.

"None from Dingo?" Angie asked.

"We already know he's Rollie's father." She shook her head and led them inside.

"Thanks for coming so quickly Lily." Daniel sighed moving away from the discomfort of Dingo's attentions.

"This will only take a minute." She nodded and opened her black medical bag and pulled out two cotton swabs and baggies. She scraped the insides of their cheeks for a few cells then marked each bag for each man. "I'll send these to a lab in Seattle that I use a lot and request a rush on it. It might still be a few days depending how backed up they are." She cautioned.

"Ange and I are here for work so it's not a problem." Rollie replied.

"Walk me out Daniel?" She nodded.

The minister nodded and escorted her to her car.

"What you're doing is really nice." She said sincerely.

"Nice.....Lily, the sooner these results come back the sooner we can get on with our lives".....and Dingo will give his attention to the man who is his son, Daniel sighed silently.

Chapter Fourteen

"I have both my boys Mangela." Dingo beamed at him.

"He's not your son!" Rollie snapped at him and stalked out of the house.

"None are so blind as those who cannot see!" Angie said angrily and ran after her husband.

"Why is he angry? His brother's alive that's a reason to celebrate." Dingo uttered confused.

"Um....I have some things I need to do, so....." Daniel said coming back inside.

"It's time for a walkabout." Mangela announced.

"I'm going to stay ----"

"Time to go mate." The aborigine said and took his arm leading him out.

Daniel closed the door and leaned against it with a sigh. He felt the necklace in his hand and looked to heaven. "Please let those tests come back soon." He prayed.

Angie caught up to Rollie and they walked together in silence for a while.

"I love you Rol....I know that doesn't make up for Dingo....but you can always count on my love."

Rollie hugged her then broke down sobbing.

She held him as he cried the hurt out.

"I want.....I need, to make love to you." He whispered once the tears had stopped.

Angie took his hand and led him deeper into the woods.

"Uh-oh, what happened?" Alex asked a while later upon seeing Daniel's face when he answered the door.

"Mr. Tyler seems to think I'm his son that was lost at birth....and who happened to be Rollie's twin." He sighed.

"That's crazy! You are Daniel Cooper!"

"We know that, but....." He shrugged. "Lily took a DNA sample from Rollie and I, a lab in Seattle will tell his father that. I feel so bad for Rollie. His dad was doting on me Alex and the look on Rollie's face.....he was very hurt."

"You can't blame yourself."

"I just.....I know what it's like to be estranged from a father." He sighed again.

"Why don't you come down for dinner?" She asked hugging him.

"Sure." He smiled, grabbed his coat and keys then followed her out.

"Thank you for taking the hurt away....even if it was only for a little while." Rollie said as they redressed.

"I'll always be here Rol, however you need me." She kissed him tenderly.

"Sometimes I feel like you're the only family I have." He replied hugging her.

"I know he doesn't show it very well most of the time, but Dingo does love you. When he finds out Daniel isn't his son he's going to need you. Can you find it in your heart to forgive him?" She didn't add 'again'.

"I always forgive him." Rollie sighed, his anger gone.

He looked around and smiled. "Mangela's close by."

"Not too close, I hope." She replied blushing.

They headed for the clearing where Rollie stopped just short of it and met the elder's eyes up in the tree.

Mangela grinned and jumped down. "Don't know 'bout you but I'm starvin'."

"Where's dad?" Rollie asked wearily.

"Left Dingo at the restaurant."

"I hope Kevin hasn't arrested him by the time we get there." Rollie muttered.

They walked into the inn ten minutes later and found Dingo grinning from ear to ear with his arm around Daniel as he regaled some of the bar patrons with his colorful tales.

"What is he doing?!?" Rollie growled.

"He bought a round of drinks for everyone....can you rescue Daniel?" Alex requested seeing how uncomfortable the minister was.

Rollie stalked over to them. "DAD!"

"A drink for my other -----"

Rollie grabbed his arm and pulled him away. "Stop it! He's not your son and you're making a fool out of yourself!" He hissed.

Dingo's face flushed and he turned away.

Rollie walked to where his wife and Mangela sat while Dingo stayed at the bar, his back to his son.

The two men virtually ignored each other.

Alex spirited Daniel into her office.

"Look at them Alex." He shook his head sadly. "I have to do something to help them, I feel partly responsible."

Alex kissed him deeply. "You have such a big heart."

"It's not my heart I need to use now, it's my head." He answered chewing on his lower lip.

Rollie looked over the menu, oblivious to the looks he was receiving from his wife.

Mangela rose and went to the bar sensing she had things to say to his sonnyboy.

"You know I'm not Dingo's number one fan.....but that was really harsh Rol."

"I know," Rollie sighed, "I just lost it when I saw his arm around Daniel." He said guiltily.

"What can I get you two?" Molly asked.

"The club sandwich and iced tea." Angie answered.

"Make it two but I'll have coffee."

Molly nodded and wrote on the order pad. "I'm Molly by the way, Kevin's wife." She smiled at Angie.

"Hi...Angie." She introduced herself.

"I know. I'll get this to Boris."

"I'm gonna talk to dad." Rollie sighed and started to rise as she left.

"Ok ---he's gone Rol."

The Aussie turned and looked to the bar to find Mangela alone. He went and spoke to him a moment then returned.

"He says I should give dad some time."

"Not a bad idea." She agreed. "Daniel's coming over."

"Hey....Rollie....are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry about all of this."

"It's not your fault. Dad never even mentioned any of this, had he I might have seen this coming."

"My father and I have had our problems too. Don't go too long without talking, it only gets harder otherwise. I need to get back to the bar, Alex has dinner for me." Daniel squeezed his shoulder gently.

"He's right, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to talk." Angie said when he'd gone.

"After dinner, if I can find him."

"Funny thing about islands, a stranger sticks out like a Yara-ma-yha-who." Mangela observed rejoining them.

Dingo walked along replaying Rollie's angry words in his head.

His brother is alive and well and back with us! Oh, Alci....help him see that.

"Mr. Tyler?"

"Oh...hey....uh?"

"Father Macanally. Most people call me Father Mac though. I noticed you seemed troubled, would you like someone to listen?"

"Not Catholic."

"Well, I won't mention that to my parishioners." The priest winked.

Dingo hesitated, he wasn't really comfortable around the clergy....ironic since my son is one.

"I have a bottle of Irish whiskey....."

The Aussie laughed and nodded.

Daniel ate at the bar talking quietly to Alex about his plans to reunite Rollie and Dingo.

"Well have to locate Dingo....let me call around." Alex said. "You'll still have to get rid of Angie and Mangela." She added dialing.

"Hey Daniel." Callie smiled joining him.

"Callie.....perfect timing. I need a favor." He grinned at Alex who shook her head with a smirk.

Rollie finished his coffee and put money on the table to cover the bill when someone appeared.

"Hi, I'm Callie. I didn't get to meet you at Christmastime because I was off the island, missed a great story! But Daniel filled me in and he said your fiancée was a real computer whiz and I was hoping she could help me?" The reporter turned pleading eyes to the blonde.

Angie glanced at Rollie who shrugged leaving it her decision to help or not.

"Sure." Angie nodded and stood.

"Great! Let's go!"

Angie followed her out amused.

"Sorry to interrupt, Father Mac needs a couple of brawny guys to move a desk. Thought I could recruit you." Daniel said coming over again.

"Yeah, okay."

"Great." The minister smiled.

"Catch ya later Mangela." Rollie said and left with him.

Mangela smiled knowingly.

Chapter Fifteen

The two men walked to the Catholic church and Daniel knocked on the door of the rectory.

"Ah! Thank you for coming, I need to speak with Daniel for a moment, we'll join you shortly Rollie if you'll just go straight down the hall to the den...."

The Aussie nodded and walked down the corridor to the room.

"I found some ------"

Rollie and Dingo looked at each other in surprise as Dingo set a box of crackers on the desk.

"I'm sorry." They said at the same time.

Dingo held his arms open and Rollie went to him.

"I'm sorry for letting you think I love Daniel more than you. You're my sons, both of you and I love you very much."

"Dad..." Rollie sighed and pulled back. "Daniel isn't your son, he's not my brother. I can't imagine how hard it was for you and mum to lose a baby but I do understand why you want Daniel to be him, not just because he looks like me but he's a really good person, someone you can be proud of ---"

"Rollie, I am proud of you too! You're a fine man.... so is your brother."

"Dad -----"

"I know in my heart Daniel is your identical twin." Dingo said cupping his face.

Rollie saw the deep conviction in his eyes and sighed. Might well hold a boxing match with a kangaroo easier than convincing him......

"Let's just give the subject a rest, okay? And don't put anymore pressure on Daniel, you're making him uncomfortable. Promise me?"

Dingo sighed heavily but acquesced to the request and they hugged again.

Daniel held out his hand, palm up, and Father Mac gave it a gentle slap and chuckled as they watched from the doorway.

"Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you, Angie." Callie grinned looking at the information on the screen.

"Glad I could help. I'd better get back to the inn and find my husband."

"Oh, he's helping Daniel at Father Mac's."

"Oh, okay ----wait a minute! How did you know that? Daniel didn't say anything to Rol while I was still there!" The blonde asked suspiciously.

"Well.....Father Mac called see and....." Callie withered under the scrutiny. "Dingo is at Father Mac's and Daniel is....sort of setting them up to run into each other."

"Pretty sneaky for a minister! But I hope it works!"

"They don't get along?"

"They've had problems." Angie answered vaguely. "I do need to get back though."

Callie nodded and walked her to the door where they saw father and son heading to the inn together.

"Looks like Daniel's plan may have worked." Callie observed.

"Hopefully."

"Thanks again for your help."

Angie nodded to her then hurried to the inn herself.

Rollie hugged her the moment he saw her.

"I saw you and Dingo...."

"We talked Ange, we really talked. I think he understands and won't push anymore."

"That's great Rol." She kissed him. "But, you do know you were set up, right?"

"Set up?" Dingo asked joining them.

"Daniel felt bad you were at odds."

Dingo's heart swelled with love and he beamed at the thought of his son doing that for them.

Rollie looked at his father, this time there was no anger because he felt the same gratitude toward Daniel.

"You guys need a table?" Alex asked.

"Um, actually, we need to get going." Rollie glanced at his watch.

"Do you know where Daniel is? I'd like to say good night." Dingo asked her.

"He's probably at home....I guess I could call him...."

Rollie nodded.

Alex made the call and came back.

"He's on his way. While we're waiting, could I have a word with you Rollie?"

"Okay with you Ange?"

His wife nodded and watched them go to the redhead's office.

"Is the inn okay?"

"Huh? Oh! It's fine. Daniel told me about..."

"Oh." He sighed deeply.

"Are you okay?"

"My dad....he's just so sure. I'm afraid he won't be able to handle the results coming back negative."

"I wish I could help. This whole thing is......"

"Wonky?"

Alex nodded with a laugh.

"Daniel's being great about it though...not so sure I would be."

"I don't know, you seem like the very understanding type, in that way you are like Daniel."

"How are things between you two?"

"Good." She smiled.

"Say the 'L' word yet?" He teased.

An odd look came to Alex's face and she turned away.

"Alex?" What have I done now?!? Rollie thought chagrinned.

"I just....I don't like remembering that time."

"I don't understand."

"It was in March. There was a storm, a tree fell.... Daniel was critically injured. He came so close to dying. Why does it take almost losing someone to admit how you feel?"

Rollie felt a chill run up his spine as the memory of Angie begging him not to die resurfaced.

"Well," she brushed a tear away and turned back to him, "Daniel is fine, we love each other, his parents have accepted it and things are good. We'd better get back before your wife comes looking for you."

They walked out and Alex smiled as Daniel came inside.

"Thank you for coming. I just wanted to tell you good night and ask if it would be alright if we came back tomorrow?"

Daniel glanced at Rollie and saw him nod.

"Sure.....if you want to."

"We should get going so we don't miss the ferry." Rollie said.

"You already did, but you might be able to catch a ride with one of the fishermen."

"I could take them, I'll have to borrow yours though."

"The keys are in the office." She nodded for him to follow. "You sure you want to do this? I know Mr. Tyler makes you uncomfortable."

"Whatever Rollie said to him at Father Mac's, he's backed off." Daniel shrugged.

Alex nodded and kissed him.

"Be careful." She requested.

"I will." He smiled.

They kissed again and he left with the others in tow.

Chapter Sixteen

Daniel spotted Alex as soon as he walked into the inn for breakfast and she came over as he took a seat at the bar.

"What can I get you?"

"I woke up with this urge to kiss you."

"That's not on the menu." She smirked. "But since you're a regular I'll make an exception."

"Hope you don't do that for all your regulars." He arched an eyebrow at her.

"Just the special one." She answered and locked lips with him.

Someone cleared their throat and they looked over to see Molly grinning at them.

"Keep that to yourself Mrs. Mitchum." He pointed at her.

"Like the whole island doesn't know you're crazy about each other." She rolled her eyes.

"That doesn't mean the whole island is entitled to know when I kiss her."

"Then you should do it in a private place."

"Hmm....she thinks I should kiss you in a private place." He waggled his eyebrows at Alex.

"Why Reverend Cooper." She fanned herself with a menu.

Molly blushed but laughed as she went upstairs.

"Working on your sermon?" Alex asked noticing the bible.

"Yeah, I didn't get too much done yesterday."

"I would guess not. So what can I get you....to eat, this time?"

"Waffles and coffee."

"I'll get it to Boris." She nodded writing on the pad.

"Can we go riding Daniel?" Dylan asked sliding onto the stool next to him.

"Can't, I have to work on my sermon." He apologized.

"I thought grown-ups didn't have homework." He frowned.

"This one does." The minister chuckled.

"After lunch?"

"We'll have to see."

"Just the child I'm looking for....Mrs. Kiley asked if you could help her pull weeds and I said yes."

"Mom!" Dylan moaned.

"I happen to know that Mrs. Kiley bakes great sugar cookies." Daniel said.

"Really?" Dylan eyed him dubiously.

Daniel nodded and patted his tummy.

Dylan eyed him another minute then headed for the door.

"So.....cookies get you to do chores huh?"

"You don't need cookies Ms. Stone." He smiled at her.

She smiled back then kissed him as Boris hit the bell.

"I'd better move to a table or I'll never get my sermon written." He uttered as she went into the kitchen.

He took the corner table and ate as he jotted down thoughts on Sunday's gospel and how it related to the islanders' lives.

"Hey Daniel."

"Hi Nub." Daniel nodded, surprised to see so many people at the inn then equally surprised to see it had been an hour since he'd arrived. "What's Brian got you up to today?"

"Driving around potential buyers."

"Had many of those lately?"

"No."

"I'm sure that will change when they start on Hope Gardens." Whenever that might be, they certainly don't seem to be in any hurry.

The younger man nodded in agreement.

"Would you excuse me Nub?" Daniel requested when he saw Dylan at the bar, head resting on his hands. He went over. "Finished helping Mrs. Kiley already?"

"She didn't have much to do....but the cookies were good."

"If we make it a short one, we can go for that ride now."

"Really?" Dylan's eyes lit up.

"Get your helmet."

Rollie took a breath as the fishing boat docked. Realistically he knew the DNA results could take several days but a part of him hoped they came back today to put an end to all of this.

"Can we see if Daniel's home?" Dingo asked.

"Let's go to the Widow's Walk first for breakfast." Rollie answered leading them off the boat.

Dingo nodded, a touch of sadness in his eyes.

"Morning." Molly greeted as they entered and led them to a table for four.

Rollie sat down and realized Dingo wasn't with them, he saw him talking to Alex and sighed softly as he got to his feet again.

"Have you seen Daniel?"

"He and my son went riding."

"Daniel is a horseman?" Dingo asked in surprise.

"No....bicycle riding."

"Come on dad, let's eat." Rollie said steering him toward their table and giving Alex an apologetic look, receiving a nod of understanding in reply.

Dylan walked in and put his helmet on the bar as he went behind it to the small refrigerator and got a bottle of juice.

"Hey baby, you have fun?" Alex asked brushing his hair back.

"Yeah ------"

"Is Daniel home?"

Alex frowned at Dingo.

"He's writing his sermon." Dylan nodded.

"And he needs solitude to finish it." Alex added.

"I understand, I won't stay long." The older man nodded.

"No, we won't. Thirty minutes tops." Rollie eyed his father.

"I'll call and tell him you're on the way." Alex replied.

Daniel snapped his fingers and hurried out of the house and to the church.

"Aha! There you are!" He grinned as he picked up his guitar which he took to the picnic table at the back of the house. He strummed the guitar for a few moments then started to put his sermon into a coherent order.

He had never figured out why music helped him do that, only that it did and he wholly accepted it and in the end his sermon got written.

"Alci played the guitar and piano."

Daniel looked up startled. "You surprised me." He confessed standing.

"You didn't talk to Alex?" Rollie asked.

"Not since I left there with Dylan to go for a bike ride."

"She was going to call and tell you we were coming up." Rollie explained.

"Oh, I was probably in the church. I can't hear the phone in there." Daniel shrugged.

"Did you get your sermon written?" Dingo asked.

"Still working on it."

"We won't stay long then." Rollie replied.

"It's beautiful here." Angie commented taking in the view.

"It is pretty inspiring." Daniel smiled. "You want some coffee?"

"We don't want to put you to any trouble." Rollie answered.

"Pot's already on." Daniel shrugged and headed for the door.

"I'm gonna give him a hand." Rollie said and followed him into the kitchen. "Thanks for what you did yesterday....I appreciate it."

"Is everything okay now?"

"Better, anyway."

"Good." Daniel smiled loading cookies onto a plate then pulling out four mugs and putting it all on a tray with the coffee pot. "Get the door?" He requested.

Angie snagged a cookie and took a bite. "These are homemade!"

"Yeah, Daniel makes good cookies." Rollie nodded.

"You didn't share." Angie glared at her husband.

"It was a long flight." He defended to the others amusement.

"So, how long have you been a minister?"

"A couple of years now, Mr. Tyler."

"Call me Dingo." Or dad.....

"How about before you were a minister?" Mangela asked.

"Got a college degree. Literature and music."

"Alci would be so....." Dingo trailed off.

"Daniel....um....did you enjoy your bike ride?" Angie asked.

"Yeah,I like riding with Dylan, he's a great kid. But you two already know that."

"What do ya mean?" Dingo asked puzzled.

Daniel gave Rollie an apologetic look.

"Ange and I were in 'Frisco a while back and ran into Daniel, Alex and Dylan." Rollie gave the short, very short, answer.

"We were there for my best friend's wedding." Daniel added.

"Who is your best friend?" Dingo asked.

"Arnie Greenburg. We met in high school, been friends ever since. He works at a hospital's childrens cancer ward."

"That can't be easy." Angie commented.

"It's not....he's very good though....better than I could be." Daniel answered thoughtfully.

"Do you play the piano too? I'd love to listen."

"We've taken up enough of Daniel's time dad." Rollie pointed to his watch.

"You could always come to services tomorrow. 9 a.m. sharp." Daniel half smiled.

"Wouldn't hold my breath." Angie uttered under hers.

"We'll get going and let you get back to work." Rollie replied and stood, the others doing likewise.

"Thank you Daniel." Dingo squeezed his hand warmly.

"You're welcome." He nodded and watched Rollie lead them back down the hill.

"Could we stay son?"

Rollie opened his mouth and Mangela interrupted.

"I could do with a bit of walkabout around the island. Join me Rollie?"

Rollie looked at him and then nodded.

"We'll be at the inn." Angie said and took Dingo with her.

Mangela started walking and Rollie followed in silence for a while.

"Mangela....what do you think about this? Have you had any Dreamings about Daniel being my brother?"

"I've had many Dreamings. Hard to say if Daniel was involved since I didn't know him before a few days ago."

"I had a Dreaming. There was a gazelle surrounded by wolves..."

"What does it mean?"

"I don't know."

"Interpret it."

Rollie sighed and turned to the water in thought.

"Ange and I looked up the gazelle. They're noted for grace and gentleness.....and the softness of the expression of their eyes."

"You know the Dreaming has a connection to your life or someone you know....so who is the gazelle sonnyboy?"

Rollie frowned then his eyes grew wide and he turned to Mangela. "Daniel! Could it be him?!?"

"The wolves?"

Rollie chewed on his lip trying to puzzle it out when a conversation he'd had with Mira once popped into his head.

'I see the lobos are out again.'

'Lobos?'

'Wolves. Reporters run in packs just like wolves.'

"Reporters. Which makes sense since Daniel's father is-----" Rollie broke off and looked at the aborigine.

"Someone important."

"Yeah. You can't ever tell dad. His father is Cliff Cooper, he's a televangelist and they have some money. It's not a wonder reporters would be looking to dig up anything on Daniel." Rollie sighed feeling for his friend.

"You asked me what I thought about Daniel being your brother......what do you think about it?"

"He's not Mangela. We're just two men who look alike and met by accident."

Mangela made no comment and began walking again.

Rollie sighed and followed.

Daniel finished his sermon and looked at his watch. Time for lunch....at the inn....with Alex and Dylan. He smiled at that thought and put his thing's away then headed to town.

Entering the inn he saw Dylan already eating lunch and went over to him. "Hey buddy."

"Hi Daniel. Thanks for riding this morning."

"You're welcome."

"Get your sermon written?"

"Sure did and now I'm ready for lunch." He smiled at the redhead.

Alex pulled out her order pad and nodded.

"The grilled cheese and an iced tea."

"Okay."

"Have you had lunch?"

"No, we were kind of busy but I can take a little time now." She smiled at him.

"Good." He smiled back.

Dylan grinned at them both.

"Be back in a minute." She said as he sat with her son.

"I'm gonna ask if he wants to join us for desert."

"Dingo don't!"

He looked at Angie startled.

"Can't you see that you're hurting Rollie?!? Daniel isn't your son! Rollie is! He needs your attention Dingo! He needs your love!" She hissed.

"Rollie knows I love him. He also knows that in my heart I know Daniel is my lost boy." Dingo answered and walked away.

Angie sighed in frustration and shook her head.

"Daniel, would you join us for desert?"

"I just ordered lunch Dingo and I have an appointment in an hour so I'm afraid not."

"Oh....I.....I understand. Perhaps we'll see each other for dinner."

"We'll see."

Dingo's smile waivered then he nodded and left them.

"That was Rollie's dad, wasn't it?"

"Yeah."

"I wonder if he think's it's weird you two look alike?"

"Dylan....I'm going to tell you something....but you have to keep it to yourself. Can you do that?"

Dylan nodded puzzled.

"He thinks I'm his son. Rollie had a twin brother who was stillborn. I think it's probably very hard for Mr. Tyler to see me and accept that the baby died. It's kind of sad."

"You're helping him though." Dylan nodded.

"I'm trying to."

Rollie and Mangela joined Dingo and Angie and ordered sandwiches while they had pie.

"Boris' friend Rollie is back!" The Russian strode over. "Why not tell Boris yesterday you come?!?"

"It was kind of.....hectic, yesterday."

"Boris not happy you not make movie with Lucinda Scott here."

"Things fell through, it happens a lot in this business." Rollie shrugged then introduced the others.

"Boris happy to meet Angie. Is too thin Boris think. Need good Russian food to put meat on bones.... all could use Boris think." He added eyeing the others then turned on his heel and went back to the kitchen.

"So that's Boris huh?" Angie smirked.

"That's Boris." Rollie nodded giving her the 'I told you' look.

"Hey, finish your lunch young man!"

"Some of the guys and I are going to shoot hoops. Please mom?" He begged halfway to the door.

"Go." She said shaking her head at his hangdog look as she placed Daniel's and her plates on the table.

Daniel chuckled as the boy took off with a grin.

"I saw Rollie's dad talking to you...." She said sitting.

"He invited me for desert, which I had to refuse since I'm meeting Carol and Mark in a little bit for pre-marital counseling."

"As long as you're not under hypnosis." She smirked.

"Never again." He answered taking a bite of sandwich.

Dingo looked over and saw Alex wipe cheese off Daniel's chin and smiled. "He looks happy doesn't he? I mean, she seems to make him happy."

"Dad ----"

"You're my sons, I want you to be happy. You have Angie.....I want him to have someone.....and it look's like it's her." Dingo said covering Rollie's hand and smiling.

Chapter Seventeen

Alex looked up as the door opened. "Don't let Boris see you, he'll insist you eat a huge Russian breakfast."

"Maybe a huge Russian lunch." Angie replied as they came over.

"Take a seat, I'll bring some menus. Coffee?"

Rollie nodded and followed her to the bar as the others got a table.

"Four blacks, one with milk." He said.

She nodded and placed the pot, four cups and milk on the tray. "Kind of surprised not to see you here yesterday."

"I convinced dad to stay on the mainland, give Daniel a break."

"I know he appreciated it."

"He's been really kind to my dad, not brushing him off ya know?"

"That's the kind of man Daniel is."

Rollie nodded and followed her to the table where she poured the coffee, handed out menus then went to wait on some regulars, returning a few moments later.

"Decided?"

"Uh....number three, wheat toast." Rollie replied.

"Same." Angie nodded.

"One." Mangela ordered.

"Four. Do you expect Daniel this morning?" Dingo asked.

"About an hour." Alex replied checking her watch then took their orders to the kitchen as Molly entered and followed.

"Morning Alex." The blond greeted her friend cheerfully.

"They get off alright?"

"Oh, yeah." Molly chuckled. "Saw Rollie and the others..."

"Boris friend Rollie is back?"

"That's their order." Alex motioned toward the wheel.

"Boris think they too thin, will make extra eggs" He said grabbing the carton from the fridge.

Alex rolled her eyes and the women left together chuckling.

Alex glanced at the clock and hurried back to the bar where she filled two large glasses of water and set them on the bar.

Brian and Nub came in and were going to sit down there when she shooed them away.

Everyone looked up upon hearing feet banging in the hall and saw Daniel and Kevin fighting to get through the doorway first. Daniel just edged him out and reached the bar a step before the cop and they collapsed onto the stools and gulped the water down.

"How far today?" Alex smirked giving them a refill.

"Four miles." Kevin wheezed.

"Yeah, and I beat him!" Daniel punched him lightly on the arm.

"I had to run around Mrs. Kiley!" Kevin defended.

"No excuses." Daniel shook his head and laughed.

Molly came past and draped a fingertip towel on each of their shoulders. Kevin grabbed at her and she made a face and danced out of reach. "Not til you've had a shower!"

"Yeah....you smell a little gamey too." Alex eyed Daniel.

"We run to look good for them and this is the appreciation we get!" Daniel said standing. "Come on Kevin!" He added grabbing the cop's arm as the women laughed at them.

"G'day Daniel."

"Oh...hey Dingo."

"Would you like to join us?"

"I can't. I have to get home and shower," Daniel replied giving Alex a look that made her grin, "my day's pretty full after that so......"

"Oh....of course." Dingo nodded, though his eyes betrayed his disappointment.

"I really do have a busy day," Daniel said placing a gentle hand on the older man's arm, "but maybe I can work in a quick lunch.....as long as it's okay with Rollie."

Dingo nodded and headed back to the table where he spoke to his son who looked at Daniel with gratitude and nodded.

Daniel raised his hand and headed for the door.

"Wonder if Rollie's still interested in the lighthouse?" Kevin said looking over at them.

Alex shrugged and went to the kitchen when Boris hit the bell.

Brian cleared his throat, straightened his tie and walked over to their table.

"Rollie? May I call you Rollie?"

"Sure, Brian." The Aussie smirked.

"Let's talk lighthouse." Brian smiled.

Daniel checked his watch as he headed down the hill.

"Afternoon Reverend."

"Craig. Have any mail for me? Save you a trip up the hill."

The mailman looked through his bag and pulled out three envelopes.

"Bill, bill, 'you may already be a winner'...."

Craig shrugged and went on his way as Daniel stuffed the mail into his coat pocket.

"Hey Daniel." Kevin nodded as he passed.

"Have you seen Rollie?"

"Brian was showing them the cottage earlier." He shrugged.

"The lighthouse....thanks." Daniel replied and headed that way. He reached the door and listened to Brian's salespitch shaking his head with a smile. "So you buying?" He asked.

"What does my wife think?"

"I like it." Angie smiled.

"Hi Daniel. Dr. Watson asked me to give this to you." Nub said handing him a note.

The minister read it, met Rollie's eyes and gave a slight nod.

"Brian, why don't you put together a contract, we'll look it over and let you know." Rollie said ushering them out.

"Wonder what that's about?" The mayor uttered as he watched the three head toward the clinic together.

Nub shrugged in reply.

Chapter Eighteen

"Well?" Dingo asked as the door closed.

"I haven't looked at them yet." Dr. Watson replied.

"We're all here, what are ya waitin' on?!?" He asked impatiently.

Lily sighed and held up two envelopes. "This is Rollie's and this is Daniel's." She said showing them in turn then opened and compared the results.

Daniel folded his arms as he leaned against the door. In a few minutes this will all be over with.

"Dr. Watson?" Rollie asked after a few moments.

She looked at both men. "It's a match." She answered quietly.

Stunned silence ensued with Rollie, Angie and Daniel staring at her open mouthed.

"My son!" Dingo laughed and cried hugging Daniel.

"NO!" Daniel said and shoved him away. "That test is wrong! I am Daniel Cooper!" He replied looking at Lily angrily.

"A hundred percent match to Rollie. You are identical twins Daniel." She apologized.

"No! They messed up at the lab! I am not your son! I am not Rollie's brother!" He snapped and stalked out.

"How.....?" Rollie asked looking toward the open door.

"I'll call the lab...but these tests are fairly definitive." Lily replied.

"Your brother's alive son." Dingo hugged him.

Angie could see Rollie was still dazed....and staring at the door with longing in his eyes. We all need time to accept this. Please God, let Daniel accept this....it would destroy Rol if his brother wants nothing to do with him.

Daniel walked quickly. He couldn't breath.

"Hi Daniel." Bonita called.

The minister didn't even hear her.

This is not happening!!!! I am the son of Cliff and Bonnie Cooper!

He started running and didn't stop until he'd reached the house where he locked the door behind him and slid down it.

Dr. Watson hung up and rubbed her forehead. "They did the test twice as a favor to me..... they both had the same results."

"But.....what about the age difference? Three years is.....three years." Angie asked rubbing Rollie's back.

Dr. Watson pulled Daniel's medical records and studied them. "Nothing in here indicates a problem with his childhood health...." She shook her head.

"Are you sure?" Rollie asked.

It wasn't that he was questioning her, just that he didn't know how they could possibly be twin's if he were three years older than Daniel.

"He was born within a week of his due date....his growth was in the appropriate percentile....learning ability on target for his age....I don't see anything that could be questionable."

"Where was he born? The hospital?" Angie asked.

"St. Elizabeth's in St. Louis, why?"

"Just curious."

"Sonnyboy didn't go to a white man's school in Australia." Mangela mentioned.

"The school here asked me how old he was....I guessed fifteen." Dingo added quietly.

"We never actually celebrated my birthday with the People. It was a communal celebration once a year for all the kids." Rollie said, finally over the shock and wanting some answers now.

"Sonnyboy's right. I'd be guessin' I'm sixty somethin' but....." Mangela shrugged.

"You could have been sixteen when you came to work for dad!" Angie said startled at the thought.

"We should find Daniel, make sure he's okay." Rollie replied concerned for him.

'I'll call Alex, see if he's there." Lily said picking up the phone.

"She knows why we we're here, so......" Rollie said.

She nodded and dialed.

Alex hung up the phone and hurried from behind the bar. "Mol!" She called her best friend.

"Yeah?" The blond asked coming from the kitchen.

"I have to go, not sure when I'll be back." Alex said grabbing her purse and heading for the door.

"Everything okay?"

Alex shook her head and ran out the door to her truck and drove up the hill hoping Daniel was there.

How could this happen? Oh, Daniel....I'm coming.

She reached the hill and checked the church, finding it empty she hurried down the stairs to the house and knocked but got no answer so she went to the back porch to look in the french doors.

"Daniel." She whispered seeing him against the front door staring blankly.

She knocked but he didn't move.

"Daniel!" She called but to no avail. "Please let me in. Lily told me. I'll break this window if I have to! Daniel.....you're scaring me."

Daniel looked over, as if hearing her for the first time and she breathed relieved as he climbed to his feet and came over and let her in.

"It's going to be okay." She hugged him.

"Why wouldn't it be? I don't care what those tests said, I'm not related to them."

"They think you are. Is there another way to prove you're not?.....I know! Your birth certificate!"

"My mom could send it." He nodded and went to the phone where he dialed the number he knew so well. "It's Daniel, I need to talk to my mom. If I wanted to speak to my father I would have asked for him James, now put my mom on!" He said tightly.

Alex rubbed his arm in support.

"Mom....can you send my birth certificate? You wouldn't believe me if I told you." Daniel sighed then smiled softly. "I know, you'll always believe me. You'd better sit down. You remember the incident in San Francisco? Yeah, when I was kidnapped. The man they mistook me for....he and his family are here. His father thought I was his son who had been stillborn so to prove that I wasn't I agreed to a DNA test....it came back a match to his son. I know, I can't believe it either, that's why I need the certificate to prove I'm not. Okay, I'll see you soon. I love you too." He replied and hung up. "They're coming soon."

"They'll straighten this out, don't you worry." She hugged him against just as there was a knock at the door.

"Daniel?" Rollie called.

The minister shook his head warily at Alex.

"I'll take care of it." She said.

He kissed her and went into the bedroom and closed the door.

Alex squared her shoulders and answered the front door.

"Is Daniel here?" Rollie asked.

"Yes, he is."

"Is he okay?" Dingo asked.

"No, he is not."

"He needs us ------" Dingo started to come in.

"What he needs is for you to leave him alone right now. His parents are coming with his birth certificate to clear this up. Until then stay away from him." Alex replied blocking the door.

Rollie looked at her a long moment then nodded.

"Thank you." Alex replied and closed the door.

"Who does she think she is!" Dingo fumed.

"She loves him and is trying to protect him." Angie answered looking at her own man. And I would do the exact same thing in her place.

"Not much we can do til his parents get here." Mangela announced and headed for the woods.

"He's right. Let's head back to town dad." Rollie said and led them off the porch.

You are my son Daniel.....and before the day is over you'll know it's true, Dingo thought glancing back to the house.

"You mind if I visit Callie? I want to see if she got that article together." Angie asked.

"That's fine sweetie." Rollie nodded taking her hand.

"They're gone." Alex knocked on the door.

"Thanks." Daniel sighed coming out. "You should get back to work."

"I can stay if you need me." She searched his face.

"I'll be okay by myself." He assured caressing her cheek then kissed her.

"Are you sure?" She asked when their lips parted.

"Mm-hmm" He nodded tiredly.

"Call if you need me?" She smiled at him.

He nodded and walked her to the door where she squeezed his hand then headed for the stairs.

Daniel watched til she was out of sight then closed the door and sighed deeply.

Chapter Nineteen

I'm no scientist or doctor but I did try to do my homework and make it seem plausible how they could be twins.

Let me state for the record, that while I borrowed elements of Maureen's (and Peggy's) various fics for this series, nothing, unequivocally, nothing was taken from "Reflections". Any similarities are purely coincidental. That said, here is Chapter 19 of "Battered"

Daniel opened the door and smiled as Bonnie and Cliff hugged him.

"I'm glad you're here." He sighed letting them in.

"Bonnie told me about this....situation." Cliff replied as they sat on the couch while Daniel settled into the desk chair.

"Yeah, a DNA test says I'm someone else's son." Daniel shook his head.

Cliff gave Bonnie the smallest of nods.

"Honey...." Bonnie looked at her son with deep love in her eyes. "Your father and I....we love you so very much. We tried for so many years to have a baby....when we couldn't we were heartsick...."

"We got a call from one of our parishioners saying there was a baby whose parents couldn't handle the responsibility...." Cliff picked up.

"The moment we saw you in the hospital, we fell in love with you. God had blessed us on that day." Bonnie rushed out.

The color had drained from Daniel's face and he looked back and forth between them.

"What are you saying?" He whispered.

"We adopted you son." Cliff answered.

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Daniel asked, tears falling down his face.

"Because you were our son the moment we picked you up and held you." Bonnie answered, tears on her own cheeks over the hurt and confusion in his eyes.

"But I'm not your son,am I!" Daniel stood abruptly. "I'm Dingo Tyler's son! If you had told me I might have been prepared for this!" He said angrily and stalked into the bedroom slamming the door closed behind him. He sat on the bed, tears streaming down his face and picked up the phone.

Angie folded the papers she had gotten from Callie's computer and put them into her pocket as she headed for the inn, hoping to find her husband there. She started up the steps and nearly collided with Alex who came rushing down them.

"Sorry." The redhead called over her shoulder running to her truck.

"Is Rol inside?"

"No."

"Everything okay?"

"I'm afraid not." Alex answered and started her truck and drove off.

Puzzled by that answer she watched and saw the inn owner head for the hill.

"I have to find Rol." She uttered and left again.

Rollie and Dingo watched the water splash against the rocks in silence.

I have both my sons now. I wish you could see them Alci. Daniel is such a fine man. He's a minister. You probably already knew that. In time he'll accept the truth and our sons will be together again.

Rollie sighed in silence.

Please let Daniel accept us. I want my brother. There's so much I want to share with him.

"Rol?"

"Hey sweetie."

"We have to get to Daniel's."

"Why?" Rollie stood in concern.

"Something's wrong. Alex took off for there in a real rush."

Dingo got to his feet and they started that way too.

Alex knocked urgently on the door and Cliff answered.

"Daniel called me. What happened?" She asked striding inside.

"He's in the bedroom." Cliff nodded toward it.

"Take care of him Alex." Bonnie asked tearfully.

Alex looked at them with a puzzled frown and walked to the bedroom and knocked on the door. Getting no answer she tried the knob and found it unlocked so she slipped into the room and saw him sitting on the edge of the bed staring out the window.

"Daniel?" She called lightly and sat next to him. "What is it? What's wrong?" She asked wiping the moisture from his face.

"I'm.....adopted." He uttered.

She couldn't stop her mouth from falling open in shock.

Daniel dropped his head and took a shuddering breath.

Her own reaction forgotten she pulled him to her and he broke down sobbing.

Bonnie looked at the bedroom door and her heart ached.

"We should have told him Cliff."

"We did what we thought was best for our son Bonnie. Daniel is our son." Cliff answered putting his hand on her shoulder.

"He's hurting so much." Bonnie whispered.

Cliff's response was cut off by a knock at the door and he went to answer it.

Bonnie turned to see who it was and gasped.

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Cooper....I'm Rollie Tyler."

The couple stared at him in shock.

Save for the scar on his face and longer hair he was the spitting image of their Daniel.

"This is my wife Angie, my....our.... dad, Dingo and our friend Mangela."

The aborigine had joined them on the way up.

Cliff stepped back, looking at him with furrowed brow.

"I now this must be....strange....for you." Rollie said as they entered.

Bonnie nodded, taking him all in.

Same eyes, same height, same build.....they are identical twins.

"Cliff...."

"I know Bonnie. I can hardly believe it myself. You're the man Daniel was mistakenly kidnapped for!" Cliff looked hard at Rollie whose reply was halted by Alex's return from the bedroom.

"How is he?" Bonnie asked worriedly.

"Sleeping. He's been through emotional hell, pardon my language, for the second time today." She sighed.

"The second time?" Dingo asked.

"It's not going to go away, you might as well tell them." Aex said when neither Cooper spoke up.

"We....adopted Daniel." Cliff said tightly.

"From Australia!" Dingo replied angrily.

"We adopted him in St. Louis." Bonnie shook her head.

"Actually, you're both right." Angie replied taking papers out of her pocket.

"Ange?"

There was another knock on the door before she could reply and Alex opened it to find Dr. Watson there.

"Angie asked me to come up." The medic explained at Alex's questioning look.

The blonde handed the papers to her and she looked puzzled as she read them.

"Where did you get these?" She asked sternly when she finished.

"I accessed the records at St. Elizabeth's. There was a code at the bottom that I recognized from helping the police. It always means there's more information in another file. It took a little maneuvering but I got their computer to release it."

"What do Daniel's record's say?" Rollie asked.

"He was born on time and healthy. Baby boy Tyler's on the other hand....he was born three months premature."

"The twins were born at six months." Dingo nodded. "The doctor told Alci he was stillborn. She never even got to see him....he was cremated. They said Alci told them to do it but if she did it was the drugs or something they gave her during labor."

"We saw Daniel just days after he was born! He was not premature! He was almost 10 pounds and his health was not in question!" Cliff asserted.

"Daniel has a scar on his back, I see it during routine exams. He told me he's had it since birth. What did the doctors in St. Louis tell you about it?"

"That it occured during labor and we needn't be concerned about it." Bonnie answered.

"According to baby Tyler's records a spinal tap occured. The band-aid used to cover it was left on too long leaving a scar....that's understandable.... he only weighed 700 grams at birth, most newborn's at full term weigh 1500 grams. The band-aid would have covered most of his back." Dr. Watson nodded looking over the second set of records. "Where did Daniel fall in the growth chart according to his pediatricians?"

"He....he was a little below, until he was fifteen.... he had a major growth spurt that spring before we moved to California." Bonnie smiled recalling.

"I'm going to call a friend of mine, a pediatrician." Lily said and went to the phone.

"Okay, Daniel was adopted by you....what did they tell you about his birth parents?" Alex asked.

"That they were teenagers. Not capable of looking after a child." Bonnie answered.

"They turned over all rights to us." Cliff added as his phone rang. "Excuse me." He said and went outside to answer it.

"So they took Daniel from the Tylers and told the Coopers he was born to teenage parents, never informing them of his premature birth....he could have been months old the first time you saw him." She told Bonnie.

"Who would have done this....and why?" Angie sighed.

"Could have been a black market ring." Dingo answered looking at Bonnie coldly.

"They usually have a family waiting to adopt." Rollie replied, not wanting to believe these people had bought his brother.

"A parishioner told us about him." Bonnie reiterated. "He had already been born then." She added looking at Dingo.

"Let's move on. The DNA test positively matched Rollie which makes you twins, but you said you were older than Daniel last time you were here." Alex frowned.

"We figured Rol is younger than we actually thought due to his lack of regular government schooling in Australia."

"But there's still a descrepency there." Rollie sighed.

"Catch-up growth." Lily replied rejoining them.

"What's that?" Dingo asked.

"I read parts of the file to my friend and he gave me an idea of what might have happened. Daniel could have had Intrauterine Growth Retardation, a condition in which infants grow slowly before birth. It's very common in twins. Rollie, while also premature may not have been as affected by IUGR. Daniel also could have been a sick baby, which is why baby Tyler had a spinal tap. If that is the case, he would have grown more slowly than a baby who wasn't sick. He could have fallen off the growth chart. According to my friend, 'catch-up growth' can continue into adolescence and the majority of tiny premature infants should be normal sized adults. Daniel's "spurt" at fifteen could very well have been the catch-up period. Dr. Ranier also said a premature baby often appears younger than they really are....."

"That would clear up the age difference then." Angie commented.

"They are the sonnyboys." Mangela smiled.

"Who did this?!? Why?!?" Dingo asked angrily.

"Perhaps the doctors in Australia didn't believe you could care for a sick child, you were bearly around for a healthy one."

"What the bloody hell is that supposed to mean?!?" Dingo glared at Cliff who stood in the doorway.

"I had my people do some checking when Bonnie told me about this. A man who left his child in the care of others while he drove around to con people out of their money-------"

"That's rich coming from you! 'Oh,I need money or my church will crumble'.....more like your mansion!" Dingo shot back.

"I work for God and I never abandoned my son!!!!"

"He's my son!"

A shouting match ensued until they were silenced by a shrill whistle.

"This is really helping Daniel, isn't it!" Alex hissed angrily. "I'm going to check on him and I hope you all take the time to think about the hurt he is feeling!" She glared at them and headed for the bedroom.

"She's-----" Rollie started guiltily.

"He's gone! He went out the window!" Alex hurried back out.

"We'll split---" Rollie began.

"No! I will find Daniel. You are probably the last people he wants to see now." She replied heading for the door.

"Alex.....when you find him.....tell him we love him." Bonnie pleaded.

The redhead hesitated a moment then nodded and hurried out. She drove down the hill as it started to rain and saw Nub heading for his boat and honked pulling over.

"Have you seen Daniel?"

"He's at the Wilson's place. He was giving me a hand with the paint scraping."

"Thanks!"

The blond man watched her go with a look of curiosity.

Wonder if it has anything to do with why Dr. Watson wanted to see him?

He shrugged and headed home for the night since it wasn't his business.

Daniel pulled his shirt off and tossed it to the floor, trying to concentrate on his task and silence the voices in his head.

We adopted you son.

It's a match.

My son!

He worked harder, sweat falling into his eyes was ignored.

Baby boy Tyler.

Daniel Cooper.

Tyler.

Cooper.

Australia.

St. Louis.

"SHUT UP!" He cried and slid down the wall clamping his hands over his ears crying.

He was pulled into comforting arms.

"I'm right here." Alex whispered, stroking his hair and rubbing his back as tears wetted her own face over his pain.

"Who am I Alex?" He choked out.

"You are a caring, giving, gentle man Daniel. The people here love you....we don't care what your name is.....we know who you are inside." She answered and rocked him again as he cried some more.

Daniel quieted down after a while and looked at her.

"I love you. You're not alone." She told him then kissed him softly.

Daniel returned it with an intensity that surprised them both, leaving them nearly breathless when they separated.

"I need you Alex." He looked into her eyes and their lips met again.

As the rain poured outside the fire inside flared and they made love for the first time.

Chapter Twenty

Rollie awoke suddenly and looked around. Daniel's.....that's where we are.

He thought about the Dreaming he'd had and wondered what it meant.

As the eagle had soared in the air he spotted the gazelle running along and followed it. He watched as it nuzzled a smaller gazelle and wondered if it was Alex, knowing how his twin felt about her.

Angie moved slightly and he smiled as she opened her eyes.

"G'day."

"Did Daniel come home?" She asked sitting up.

"No." Mangela answered.

They looked over and saw him wide awake, Dingo on the other hand, was still sleeping, a smile gracing his face.

Dreaming about Daniel? Rollie wondered.

"Maybe we should call the inn. See if Alex found him. She might have taken him back with her." Angie suggested.

"I hate to wake anyone but...." Rollie nodded.

"You ran away sonnyboy, and you always came back.....when you were ready to face the truth."

"Daniel's not me."

"Perhaps not....."

Rollie looked at his mentor thoughtfully.

>He told dad his ki's were here....did he know about Daniel and I being twins?

"Daniel? Oh....." Bonnie said with disappointment as she came out of the bedroom before he could ask.

"He's not back." Angie answered quietly.

It was clear how much she loved her son. Dingo's son. THEIR SON!

"He....he just needs time." Bonnie nodded and went to the kitchen where she pulled the carton of eggs from the fridge. "Are eggs all right with everyone?" She inquired.

"I'll give you a hand." Angie rose and went to the connecting room.

Rollie watched Bonnie with mixed feelings. He was happy his twin had such a great mother but sad because he missed his own so much at the moment.

Alex awoke slowly, feeling an incredible warmth in her soul. Her mind replayed every detail of their night of love making and she smiled as she opened her eyes.....and found herself alone.

"Daniel?" She sat up and looked down, finding his shirt covering her.

"I'm right here." He answered quietly.

She turned and found him sitting against the wall behind her, eyes closed. Slipping the shirt on, she crawled over to him.

"You okay?"

He opened his eyes looking so tired her heart went out to him.

"How long have you been up?" She asked.

"A while." He shrugged.

She took his hands in hers and kissed them.

"Talk to me."

"I don't know what to do. Finding out I was adopted....that hurt so much Alex....but they're my parents, the only ones I've ever had. Dingo and Rollie....what do they want from me? To be the missing piece of their family? I don't know if I can."

She pulled him into her arms and held him. "Just do what feels right to you. What you're comfortable with. No one has the right to ask or demand more of you."

"I'm so glad I have you. I don't think I could handle this alone." He hugged her.

Daniel released her, reluctantly, after a bit. "We'd better get going, I meet the council in an hour."

She nodded, a flicker of sadness crossed her face and she turned away.

"Hey," he touched her chin, "I love you."

"I love you too." She gave him a small smile then her eyes fell to their hands.

"What's wrong?"

"Last night....it was amazing. I don't want it to end."

"It won't. Alex, I'm not going to abandon you. Trust in my love." He answered kissing her softly.

"I do Daniel." She looked at him. "I wish it had been you when I was nineteen, Dylan would be ours." She added wistfully.

"But he wouldn't be Dylan, and you have a great son....because you are a great mother." He replied sincerely.

"You make me so happy." She hugged him again.

"It's mutual." He responded softly, loving her more than he had last night.

"We'd better get dressed before someone comes." Alex sighed.

He let her go and helped her redress. Once they were clad again they headed for the door, where Daniel stopped her.

"I want to be with you again....share that intimacy."

"I want that too. I can't sneak out though.....Dylan--"

"I'll sneak in. I would come even if we never made love again, just for the chance to hold you and tell you how much I love you." He caressed her cheek.

She hugged him again, feeling a love she'd never known swell within her.

He held her close and inhaled her scent, wanting to take some part of her with him. A smile curved his lips.

"I knew you had a lot of passion."

She smiled back then they kissed deeply and went their separate ways.

"I'm sure he's okay."

Rollie nodded looking at the drizzling rain from the porch.

She slipped her hand into his then pointed to the figure hurrying down the steps toward them.

"It's him." Rollie smiled relieved.

The Minister picked up his pace as the rain did and reached them a minute later.

"Daniel, can we talk?" Rollie requested.

"I have a meeting and I need to shower." Daniel shook his head and went inside.

"Daniel! Do you want some breakfast?" Bonnie asked looking him over.

"No time, I'll just grab a granola bar after my shower." Daniel replied and headed to the bedroom to grab clean clothes then disappeared into the bathroom.

Angie saw the disappointment on Rollie and Dingo's faces and she ached for them.

"Bonnie's right, it'll take time." She said quietly.

"He doesn't want anything to do with us." Rollie replied in a aching whisper.

"Rol, he got a double-whammy yesterday, he's probably still in shock. I know I am."

"I want my brother Ange. If we can't be brothers then I want our friendship back."

She hugged him not knowing what else to do.

"I wish I could snap my fingers and make it the way you want."

"You are the best Ange, every day I'm more thankful that I have you."

"You always will. Maybe we should get a room at the inn, give Daniel some breathing room."

"I'll let dad and Mangela know. We'll need to go to the mainland to get our things."

"Shouldn't be too hard to catch a ride."

Daniel brushed his hair out and looked at his reflection in the partially steamed mirror. That feels like my life now, he thought, then wiped it away with a towel, if only it were that easy, he sighed then finished buttoning his shirt and went back to the bedroom where he donned socks and boots. His next stop was the kitchen where he poured coffee and ate a granola bar while looking out the back window. A smile touched his lips as he thought about Alex and what they had shared. Alex and I have taken the next step....next is engagement...then marriage. One step at a time Daniel....one step at a time. Knowing the others were watching him but not prepared to deal with it yet, he ignored them as he ate then rinsed the coffee cup out, brushed his teeth, grabbed his rain slicker and hat and headed for the church to discuss the Community Outreach Program.

Alex couldn't recall a time when she felt this good and smiled to herself as she wiped the bar. She and Daniel were lovers now, more importantly, they were in love and she knew he would never abandon her. She in turn would help him come to terms with these recent revelations affecting his present....and future.

Looking up upon hearing the door she was assailed by guilt as Rollie and Angie walked in with several suitcases.

"Morning...um....Daniel's fine."

"We were at the house when he came back this morning." Rollie replied.

"I'm....sorry I didn't call---"

"It's okay, he needed you last night."

"We'd like a couple of rooms....get out of his house..." Angie added.

Alex pulled out the registry and had them sign it then led them upstairs. Rollie took a couple of bags to the second room while Angie took theirs into the room behind Alex.

"If you need anything...."

"How is Daniel?" Rollie asked from behind her. "Truthfully."

Alex turned and saw the plea in his eyes and sighed.

"Have you had breakfast?"

"Yeah, but coffee would take the chill off." Angie answered for both of them.

The redhead led them downstairs and got the coffee then joined them.

"When I found him last night.... I have never seen him that vulnerable. He asked me who he was." She began, her heart breaking all over again.

Rollie swallowed the lump in his throat. He ached for his twin.

Angie squeezed his hand.

"What did you tell him?" She asked.

"That he's the same man he was when he arrived. We all love him. His last name doesn't matter any more than who his father is."

"Do you...." Rollie trailed off.

"What?" Alex prompted.

"Do you think he'll ever want us in his life?" The Aussie asked softly.

"Rollie...." Alex sighed, "It's only been a day. He has to figure out who he is now, that's going to take time. Just be patient." She advised.

"Rollie! Angie! Boris make friends big breakfast!"

"We already ate." Angie smiled apologetically.

"Boris make you lunch then! Come back noon! Will have big Russian lunch!" He beamed.

"Sounds good." Angie smiled as the phone rang.

Alex excused herself and went to answer it while Boris went to the kichen.

"I was shocked, then happy, then excited when I found out he was my brother. It never occured to me that he might be uncertain about his identity now. I wish there were some way to assure him that he's still Daniel Cooper." Rollie sighed.

"Maybe....we should tell him that."

Rollie nodded giving her a smile.

Dingo looked out the window toward the church.

"Two sonnyboys to be proud of." Mangela smiled.

"I don't think Daniel will accept us." Dingo answered softly.

"It will work out." Mangela stated.

"You've seen it?" Dingo turned to him.

He never quite understood the aborigine's ability to see the future but was grateful to the native for taking care of his son when he couldn't be there....which was far too often, he lamented.

"It's time for a walkabout." Mangela replied and headed for the door.

After a moment, the older Aussie followed.

Daniel poured some coffee Ruby had brought and sighed.

"Are you all right Reverend Cooper?" She inquired.

"Family problems." He shrugged.

"Do you want to talk about it? A minister needs someone to listen at times

too."

"Thanks, but this I need to sort out on my own." He gave her a grateful smile.

She nodded and patted his arm.

"Is that all Daniel?" Molly asked.

"Uh....yeah. I wanted to get working on it before the holidays rolled around."

"Okay. I need to get to work to help set up for the lunch crowd. Will we be seeing you?"

"Not sure." He shrugged.

Everyone looked up as the door opened and Bonnie entered.

"Bye, Daniel." Molly said then headed for the door. "It's nice to see you again Mrs. Cooper."

"Thank you Molly." She nodded as Molly exited.

"I'd better get going before Bonita writes me a very long letter." Ruby sighed.

Daniel chuckled and patted her back.

"Bye, Daniel." Nub waved.

"Reverend." Brian nodded, leaving with the younger man.

Daniel folded the chair he'd been using and took it into the back, returning, he found Bonnie wrapping the leftover cookies.

"You don't have to do that mom."

Tears came to her eyes upon hearing 'mom'.

"Daniel....your father and I....we should have told you sooner. I'm sorry you're hurting so much."

Daniel embraced her as the door opened again.

"Daniel, there's a phone call."

"Thanks dad." He nodded and left the church while Bonnie and Cliff followed with the remaining food and coffee.

"Hello? Emma....yeah....I'll be right over." Daniel took the call then hung up and hurried into the bedroom, when he returned he was wearing his cleric's collar and pulling his slicker back on.

"Daniel? Could we talk? We have a lot to----" Dingo said as he entered and saw his son.

"I can't. I have duties to perform. I'm not sure when I'll be back." He replied and hurried out the door.

Bonnie glanced over at the older man and saw the sadness and felt for him. Cliff and I made the decision to keep the truth from Daniel but someone took him from his birth family letting them believe he had died then. She sent a silent prayer to heal them all....especially Daniel.

"We saw Daniel leave in a rush, everything okay?" Rollie asked as they came inside, fervently hoping his father and Cliff hadn't fought again and driven Daniel farther away.

"He had a parishioner to see." Cliff answered.

"Then I think now is a good time for us all to talk... and find a way to make this easier for him." Rollie suggested.

"I agree." Bonnie nodded and headed to the kitchen to get the coffee.

Chapter Twenty One

Daniel removed his collar as he climbed the steps to the house with trepidation. He didn't want to deal with all of them. Part of him wanted things to be the way they were before, but he knew they couldn't be, not any more. He sighed as he opened the door, bracing himself to face everyone.....but the house was empty. "Hello?" He called holding his breath then released it relieved when there was no answer. "Thank you God." He said softly.

It was almost three and he was starving, having had no lunch. He changed into a sweater and went to the kitchen where he made a sandwich and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. He found a note n the counter and read it.

Daniel,
Your father and I have taken a room at the inn as have the Tylers so you get your house back.
We love you,
Mom

Daniel put it back on the counter and left for a walk in the woods to do some thinking.

Rollie and Angie walked hand-in-hand through the woods feeling better about things after the talk they all had. They agreed to get along to make it easier on Daniel and to give him as much time and space as he needed in order to accept things. They also agreed not to pressure him into relationships with them that he might not be ready or comfortable with.

He so much wanted Daniel to be his brother, a real one, but he would let Daniel decide if that's what Daniel wanted. He fervently hoped so.

Rollie had always sensed something missing in his life and he couldn't help but wonder if it was his twin.

Who did this? Who separated me and my twin? Why? Daniel and I should have grown-up together, sharing secrets in bed at night, exploring the Outback together, learning from Mangela..... Someone stole that from us!!

Angie pointed and he nodded and the couple quietly went the other way so as not to disturb them.

Daniel sighed happily as his lips parted from Alex's. "I'm glad you found me." He smiled.

"So am I. I've been worried about you." She answered touching his face.

He wrapped his arms around her.

"What are you going to do?"

"I don't know." He sighed. "You think anyone would notice if we just stayed here forever?"

" 'Minister and Inn Keeper Vanish into Thin Air!'. I can see Callie's face now." Alex laughed.

"I forgot about our intrepid reporter." Daniel chuckled.

She kissed him softly then pulled him to his feet as they headed back.

"They all love you Daniel and I think they understand that you need some breathing room right now."

"They did leave the house." He nodded.

"I have to get back for dinner. Come down?"

"Maybe later, I have a consultation."

"I love you." She said and kissed him deeply.

"How'd I get to be so blessed?" He hugged her.

"I'll see you later." She smiled as they reached the house.

Dingo and Mangela walked in silence, Dingo wondered how different things would have been if Daniel had been in their lives all along.

Would I have been more responsibe in raising two sons after Alci died? I wasn't a good father to Rollie, I know that, would I have been better if I'd have had both to look after?

We'll never know that will we?!? Someone took it upon themselves to separate my boys! They had no right! NO RIGHT!

"I'm gonna find out who did this and why!" He uttered angrily.

"I told you about the flying eagle and the running gazelle...."

"You said it was my boys."

"I saw another creature....it hid in the underbrush, away from the light of day....it was watching the sonnyboys."

"Is someone after my sons?!? Do you know who it is?!?" Dingo demanded.

"I didn't see it, but I sensed it would attack if threatened. Don't dig around in the darkness Dingo, this creature could be poison to the boys." Mangela replied dead serious.

"Someone separated me and my boy, someone you're telling me could have deadly intentions toward both my sons and you want me to leave it alone?!?"

"For now Dingo. The creature will be come out one day....then they'll face our wrath."

"I want to know as soon as you do! They're gonna rue stealin' my son!"

"Yes, my old friend, they will." The aborigine promised.

They looked up to see Rollie and Angie talking to some of the towns people and they walked over to them.

"What's going on son?"

"A little boy's missing." Rollie replied.

"Kevin wants everyone to pair up in twos and scour the woods. Michael goes up there with his parents sometimes." Nub said.

"We can help look." Angie offered.

"I'll let Kevin know." The shy blond man nodded.

"Let's go." Rollie led them away.

"Daniel? There you are."

"Hey, Callie. What's up?" He asked rising from the pew as the reporter hurried down the aisle.

"Michael's missing. I thought we could search the woods."

"Sure." Daniel nodded and left with her.

"MICHAEL!" Daniel called out as he walked through the woods.

He carefully looked over the ravine praying the boy hadn't fallen. A shiver swept over him as he recalled Dylan's near fall on their camping trip with Steve. He'd had nightmares for day's afterwards about not reaching him in time.

"Please God, let us find him." He prayed as he heard Callie's calls.

He bent down to look under a bush that was about the right size to hide a boy.

Rollie and Angie listened as the church bells rang loud and clear. They looked at each other questioningly and spotted Kevin heading their way.

"What's with the bells?" Angie asked.

"Michael's been found. We ring the bells to let everyone know, it's the only thing that can be heard all over the island."

Rollie looked to his right and saw his father and Mangela heading over.

"I need to get back to town, thanks for helping." Kevin nodded to them all and started off.

"Hey,Kevin! Was Daniel looking too?"

"If he knew, I'm sure he was."

"Thanks." Rollie nodded.

Angie squeezed his hand. She knew he was worried about his brother after the dream he had, though he couldn't recall it, it had frightened him all the same.

"I'm sure Alex will know----" Dingo began.

"HELP!"

Rollie took off with the others right behind.

Callie ran as fast as she could calling, praying someone would hear her.

"HELP!"

She had to get help and fast.

"Callie! Was that you?" Angie asked as they ran into her.

"Thank God! It's Daniel---"

"WHAT?!? WHERE IS HE?!?" Rollie and Dingo shouted in unison.

"He---the ravine----" She pointed.

"Oh.....God....." Rollie breathed and pushed past her.

"Show them!" Angie ordered the reporter.

The men and Callie headed in one direction while Angie ran back toward the town.

"DANIEL!" Rollie called and breathed relieved when the minister moved slightly. "Is there another way down?" He asked Callie.

"It slopes downhill that way." She pointed the way they had come.

"Come on! Dad, Mangela, stay here and talk to him."

The pair hurried along leaving the men alone.

"DANIEL! SON! IT'S GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT. HELP IS COMING." Please, please let my boy be okay.

Daniel moved with a groan.

"Ow!" He uttered grabbing his arm as he sat up.

"DANIEL! DON'T MOVE!"

He looked around to see who was shouting to him and saw two people on the cliff above. He squinted to see who it was then closed his eyes when a headache set in.

"DANIEL!"

The minister looked up hearing the concern in the voice then got to his feet and started to stumble away.

"NO! DANIEL STAY PUT!"

Daniel stopped, feeling confused. His head throbbed and he felt nauseous.

"Daniel!" Rollie ran over and made him sit on a boulder in the creek.

The minister offered no resistance and in fact leaned against him.

"Daniel....Daniel...." Rollie tried to get him to focus.

"My head hurts." Daniel mumbled.

"It's gonna be okay." Rollie held him.

Kevin, Angie, Lily, Harry, Nub and several islanders hurried along the creekbed, spotting the two men they ran over.

Lily immediately set to examining him, checking his eyes when Rollie told her his head hurt.

"Kevin, get my truck, I want to take him to the clinic for x-rays."

The cop nodded and hurried off.

"Daniel, can you tell me what happened?"

"Michael..."

"Melissa found him hiding under the bed." Nub replied.

"Looking...bush....possum....startled me." He looked at the cliff and shivered.

"Bit of a tumble mate." Rollie smiled at him and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

"Gave us all a bit of a scare son." Dingo added with tears in his eyes.

"I'll go let the others---" Nub started.

"DANIEL!" Alex ran over and knelt in the water in front of Daniel.

"OW!" He replied as Lily touched his wrist.

"Sorry. Doesn't feel broken, maybe badly sprained."

Kevin showed up several minutes later and Lily, Alex and Rollie helped Daniel into the truck and went with him to the clinic while the others followed on foot.

Lily closed the door forty-five minutes later and found almost two dozen people in the waiting room, a testiment to what Daniel Cooper meant to the islanders.

"The x-rays show no breaks. He has a sprained wrist, sore ankle and numerous cuts and bruises along with a slight concussion. He wants to go home, which I will allow, on one condition....he is not to be left alone at anytime until the concussion is past."

"Someone staying with him won't be a problem." Fr. Mac. smiled as the others nodded.

"I figured as much and that's the only reason I agreed to his request. Give me a few minutes to prep him."

"Guess we won't be staying at the inn tonight." Angie said softly to her husband and received a look of gratitude in response.

"Okay, you go home and rest. No arguments!" Lily said eyeing her patient as she helped him out of the room.

"None of you are talking...guess I look pretty awful." Daniel sighed as Alex took over for the doctor in supporting him.

"I think you look wonderful." She murmurred.

Daniel gave her a slight smile as Bonnie touched his cheek.

"Let's get you home." Alex said as she and Kevin helped him to the police truck where Alex, Bonnie, Cliff, Rollie and Dingo climbed in with him and they headed up the hill while Angie, Mangela and a few others followed again on foot.

Rollie silently helped his brother undress, wincing at the bruises on him as he did so, then got him into sweats and bed.

Daniel's eyes closed and he let out a sigh.

The Aussie covered him with a blanket and smiled. He turned at the light knock on the door and opened it to find Alex there.

"I think he's asleep." He whispered.

"I just wanted to see him before I go back down."

The Aussie nodded and let her into the room and she knelt by the bed.

"I love you." She whispered into his ear. "When Cleaver told me you were hurt all I could think of was when I nearly lost you in March. When I saw you sitting on that boulder, I was so relieved." She stroked his cheek.

"I'm glad he has her." Bonnie whispered standing next to Rollie.

"Me too." Rollie agreed watching then turned to her. "You can take first watch."

"Thank you." She answered teary eyed as she looked at her son's twin.

They watched Alex kiss him and brush a stray lock of hair back into place then she stood and joined them.

"I'll be back after dinner."

"We'll call if he needs you before then." Bonnie squeezed her hand.

Rollie and Alex left her alone with her son.

Rollie placed a hand on Dingo's shoulder.

"I saw him lying there and...."

"I know, I was afraid we'd lost him too." Rollie hugged him.

"I just found my boy, my sons were together again, like they should have always been....we have to be in his life Rollie!"

"The way he's comfortable with though. No pressure, remember?"

Dingo nodded as they looked out as daylight faded over the water.

Callie motioned Nub and Kevin outside a while later.

"Okay, what's up with that? Daniel's parents sitting with him yeah, Rollie, okay, they're friends......but Rollie's dad? Daniel met the guy a week ago!"

"It does seem weird." Kevin agreed.

"They've been hanging around Daniel a lot since they got here and they all went with him to Dr. Watson's yesterday." Nub offered.

"I smell a story, especially when Angie used my computer yesterday and wiped all trace of what she went on-line for." Callie chewed on her pencil.

"Perhaps it's private....as are many things in Daniel's life." Fr. Mac. answered looking at her pointedly as he joined them.

She nodded guiltily, recalling the whole Stella incident and how hurt he'd been when she wrote the article.

"Yeah, if Daniel thinks we should know he'll tell us." Kevin agreed feeling a bit of shame for gossiping about his best friend.

"I just hope Daniel gets better." Nub replied.

"Lily certainly thinks he will and I've asked the good Lord to look after him." Fr. Mac. said and led them back inside.

"I know you don't want to go Bonnie, but neither of us will sleep well on the couch."

"You three should go back to the inn too, get a good night's sleep." Rollie nodded to his family.

Angie didn't bother to coax him into leaving, knowing he needed to be close to his twin.

"Sonnyboy's right, these old bones need a hard bed." Mangela grinned.

"Go on dad, I know you're tired, it's been a long day." Rollie encouraged.

Dingo looked to Daniel's closed door where Alex was at the moment then nodded with a sigh.

"I can take you all down since I need to go myself." Kevin offered.

They figured out who would come when then headed out for the night.

"If someone can't make it, call, I'll be here all night." Rollie said.

"I wouldn't worry about lack of volunteers." Callie smirked.

"Indeed." Fr. Mac. nodded.

"Let's get going then." Kevin said and opened the door to find Lily there.

"Alex is with him." Nub told her.

They all hung around until she returned from checking on him with good news that his vital's were normal.

Rollie closed the door behind them and sat on the couch.

"I know I don't talk to you much....but thanks for looking after him." He whispered to heaven then settled in for the night.

Chapter Twenty Two

Rollie took a deep breath and smiled as the sun shone on his face and the red dirt of home whipped around him.

"It's time."

"Mangela?" Rollie looked around for him and saw they were on top of Uluru. "If this is a Dreaming, I don't understand it."

Mangela pointed and grinned.

"Daniel?" Rollie breathed at his twin who stood only a foot away.

The minister looked at him then leaped from the rock formation.

Rollie sat up breathing hard. He went to Daniel's room and found Father Mac. dozing in the chair. He looked at his twin sleeping peacefully and quietly laid down next to him and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder then closed his eyes feeling better at the contact.

"DANIEL!" Rollie screamed and grabbed his arm just as he started to fall. The Aussie hauled him back up and held him tightly. "What were you doing, you could have been killed?!?" Rollie trembled rocking him.

"I took a leap of faith." The minister replied softly and touched Rollie's face.

"Daniel...." He whispered, tears coming to his eyes.

The twin stood and held out his hand which Rollie grasped and they walked off the rock together.

Rollie awoke to light streaming into the room.

Nub smiled at him.

"How long have you been here?" Rollie asked quietly as he glanced at the clock that read 7:00.

"I came at five."

Rollie took a deep breath ad eased off the bed so as not to wake his twin.

"You want some coffee?" Rollie asked reaching the door.

Nub held up a thermos.

"Oh." Rollie smiled and left the bedroom.

He made a pot of coffee anyway and went out to the back porch where he leaned against the rail and sipped it.

The dream was still fresh and Rollie wasn't sure what to make of it. He didn't think it was a Dreaming...he wasn't an eagle and Daniel wasn't a gazelle... so what did it mean?

He sighed deeply and watched the sun glisten off the water.

Alex pulled up at the top of the hill and she and Dylan climbed out.

"You have to be quiet, I'm sure Daniel is still asleep." She warned.

The boy nodded leading the way down the steps.

Alex knocked lightly on the door then opened it when there was no answer. The livingroom was empty so they went to the bedoom.

"Hi, Nub." She whispered and he smiled back.

"Why is his hand wrapped up?" Dylan asked softly.

"He sprained his wrist." Alex answered.

"It's not broken?"

"No, baby."

"Good. Travis broke his arm last year and he couldn't play ball for weeks." He said relieved.

Alex ruffled his hair with a smile.

"How's he doing?"

"He's been asleep." Nub shrugged.

Ask a stupid question.... Alex thought to herself.

"You've seen him, time to scoot." She said aloud and pointed her son toward the door.

"Can I come back after school? Please mom?!?"

"Yes, now let's go, you have school soon."

As they left Alex glanced out the french doors and her breath caught.

"Mom?"

"He looks so much like Daniel." She uttered.

"Mom, everybody knows they look alike." He rolled his eyes.

Alex shook off the feeling and they left for home.

Angie finished dressing and headed downstairs.

"Morning." Alex greeted. "Sleep well?"

"So-so. I'm used to Rol, you know?"

The redhead nodded as the blonde took a seat at the empty bar.

"Coffee?" She asked.

"Yeah." Angie replied looking over the menu. "I should take something to Rol."

"The Coopers headed up there a few minutes ago, I'm sure she'll make something for them all."

Angie nodded and looked at her closely. "Everything okay Alex?"

"It's just....I took Dylan up this morning, he wanted to see Daniel for himself...as we were leaving, I caught a glimpse of Rollie on the back porch.... the way he was standing and the look on his face---"

"Eerie? It is to me too when I look at Daniel sometimes. When I went to bed last night I thought about what might have been had they grown-up together. Rol wouldn't have been alone through all the terrible things he experienced. He really wants his brother Alex." Angie confided quietly.

Alex didn't reply, she couldn't say anything to help since she honestly didn't know where Daniel stood about this, other than that he was still very confused about these new relationships and what was expected of him.

"See anything you want?" She asked after a moment.

"Um...I'll have the---"

"G'day."

"Coffee Mr. Tyler?"

"The name's Dingo." He corrected with a smile.

"Okay, Dingo...coffee?"

Dingo nodded as he sat next to his daughter-in-law. "Do either of you know how Daniel is this morning?"

"He was asleep earlier. I don't know if Lily has been up to see him yet." Alex shrugged.

"Daniel's parents are with----oh...Dingo...I'm sorry." Angie said chagrinned.

"'kay Angie. They raised a fine man."

Angie squeezed his shoulder.

"Is your friend coming down?" Alex asked placing the coffee in front of them.

"He was gone when I got up." Dingo shrugged.

"G'day sonnyboy."

Rollie looked over and smiled at his mentor.

"Something on your mind?" The aborigine inquired joining him on the porch.

"I had a strange----"

"Rollie the---oh, I'm sorry for interrupting. The eggs are ready." Bonnie said opening the door.

"Thanks." Rollie nodded and she went back inside. "Daniel is very lucky to have her." He sighed.

"Your mum's life was short, but she filled it with memories for you. Share those with Daniel."

"He doesn't seem to want us."

"Take a leap of faith." Mangela replied and opened the door leaving Rollie with his mouth agape.

Rollie composed himself, vowing to ask Mangela about why he chose the same words Daniel had in his dream, sure it was more than mere coincidence, and went inside to eat.

"I can sit with Daniel while you all eat." Mangela offered.

"Thank you, I'll get Cliff." Bonnie nodded and he followed her to the bedroom.

Cliff turned as the door opened.

"Breakfast. He'll stay with Daniel." Bonnie said.

The elder Cooper looked at him uncertainly for a moment then gave a slight nod and rose to follow Bonnie out leaving Mangela alone with Daniel.

The aborigine touched Daniel's furrowed brow and it immediately smoothed out then he began speaking to him in the ancient tongue relaying the history of his native homeland to the stolen son.

"I'm gonna head up to the house." Dingo rose. "Angie...."

"I got it covered." She shook her head and pulled out her wallet to pay their bills.

"It must be hard for him." Alex uttered.

"Yeah....for all of us really.....but mostly for Rol and Daniel."

"Hey Alex, Angie."

"Morning Mol."

"Any word on Daniel?"

"Haven't seen Lily." Alex shrugged. "Hey, you mind if I head up there in a bit?"

"No, stay for lunch, Daniel would like that." The blond smiled knowingly at her best friend.

"Thanks, I just might." Alex nodded as Molly went to wait on some new arrivals.

"Hey, Alex...tell me about Daniel."

"Well....he is a mainlander and a minister...two things I had no love for when he arrived." She smiled recalling those days.

"So what changed your mind about him?"

"The way he was with Dylan. My son was really angry when we moved here, he thought his father would come and take us back to Miami---"

"And when he didn't?"

"He started cutting school. Kevin's job includes truancy and he tracked him down at the church where Daniel said he was his acolyte."

"That must have went over like the lead balloon." Angie chuckled.

"Oh yeah. He came here and apologized and asked if there was any way I would let Dylan help him. I of course said no and made him tell my son that himself."

"You weren't going to let him off the hook at all huh?"

"Mainlander slash preacher, remember?"

"Of course, go on." Angie smiled, glad to know it had a happy ending.

"I wasn't eavesdropping, not exactly, but I heard Daniel tell him things and it was clear to me he really empathized with Dylan's missing relationship with Steve."

"And that changed your mind?"

"Not completely...it was when I saw Dylan in the church that Sunday...he really wanted to help Daniel, his new friend. I didn't have the heart to deny him that man in his life, not when he desperately needed him. Daniel has been so good for him. Dylan strives to do well in school to please him and his eyes sparkle when he comes back from spending time with him. Daniel has been a true breath of fresh-air for us all. So, how about you and Rollie?"

"I was eleven when my dad hired him as an apprentice. I had a monster crush on him for the first few years. As the years passed our relationship changed of course and we grew even closer after certain tragedies happened and because of them we came to realize we were in love and wanted to have a life together."

" Then we were both lucky."

Angie raised her coffee mug in agreement.

Chapter Twenty Three

Daniel groaned as he moved and winced at the soreness of his body.

"Daniel?"

He opened his eyes to see Cliff watching, concerned.

"Come in." The elder Cooper called at the knock on the door.

"I came to check---oh, I see you're awake." Dr. Watson smiled at Daniel as she entered.

"And very sore." Daniel winced.

"Let me look you over."

Ciff excused himself, relieved Daniel was awake.

Dr. Watson examined him from head to toe, satisfied he was past the concussion and now healing.

"Okay, things look good.... do you have any epsom salts? A soak will ease the aches and pains."

"I don't know." He sighed.

"We'll have some brought up then and get you into the tub this afternoon. Ruby left some soup and I want you to eat a little of it."

Daniel nodded slightly.

"I'll see about that soup then." Lily patted his leg gently and started for the door.

"Could you help me first?" He asked looking at the cover as a blush creeped into his cheeks.

"What is it you need?"

"The bathroom."

"I'm sorry, of course."

The bedroom door opened and the others looked over to see Lily helping Daniel out of the room.

"Bathroom." She answered their questioning looks.

It was slow going and Daniel was very glad the bathroom wasn't far because his legs were rather wobbly by the time they reached it.

"Um...." He blushed.

"Would you like one of the men to help you?" She guessed.

He nodded, relieved she understood.

She left him resting on the toilet seat and a moment later Rollie came in.

"Saw your bruises last night...could play connect-the-dots with them." He sympathized.

"The one that really hurts is my thigh." Daniel gently touched it and winced.

"It is uh....kind of nasty looking. Maybe Dr. Watson can give you something for it?"

"I don't know, I'm finished though."

Rollie nodded and helped him redress, walked him back to his room and resettled him into bed.

"Dr. Watson said you should eat something and get some more rest." Bonnie said bringing in a tray with the soup and juice.

A smile graced Daniel's lips at the memory of the times his mom brought him soup and juice when he was sick. She stayed while he ate then took the tray away.

The next time the door opened it was Alex and he smiled at her.

"Hey,Dylan will be glad to know you're awake." She grinned and sat down. "Has Lily been here?"

"Yeah, I look good I guess."

"You certainly do." She smiled and met his lip's for a gentle kiss.

"I wish I didn't hurt so much." He said huskily.

"You'll be healed soon."

He laid back on the pillows and sighed.

"What is it?" She asked, gently massaging his temples.

"As I was falling, I thought about all the things left undone in my life." He answered, eyes drifting closed. "I don't want to be on my death bed and have regrets Alex. I want to know I've lived my life to the fullest and was the best person God has asked me to be." His voice grew light. "I prayed for a second chance...and it was granted to me. No more regrets." He mumbled and dozed off.

Alex smiled lovingly at him then quietly left him to sleep.

Angie slid her arms around Rollie and hugged him as he stood by the picket fence facing the water.

The Aussie brought his lips to hers and they kissed.

"He's awake Angie." Rollie smiled.

"Alex told me. How's he doing?"

"He's really sore....but Dr. Watson says he'll be okay."

"I'm happy about that."

"When Callie said he'd fallen down the ravine I was so afraid I'd lost him."

"You didn't Rol." She caressed his face.

"I used to pretend I had a brother and we'd do all sorts of things together... it made the loneliness more bearable."

"You should tell Daniel that."

"Maybe I will."

Daniel yawned and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, glancing at the clock he saw it was nearly three and decided he wanted a drink of water. Awkwardly he sat up and moved to the side of the bed where he slid his legs over. He was panting from that small effort and closed his eyes to ward off the nausea, taking several deep breaths he slowly released them until he felt better and his heart was no longer beating like a drum.

"You can do this." He said determined.

He slowly stood, sliding one foot in front of the other he made it to the door. Holding onto it until he caught his breath again he then opened it and left his room one step at a time.

The Coopers and Tylers were talking quietly on the back porch when they heard a clatter from inside and rushed in.....to find Daniel on the floor clutching his leg.

"Daniel!" Bonnie gasped as Rollie, Cliff and Dingo ran over to him.

"Cramp!" Daniel choked out.

Angie got in between the men and began massaging Daniel's leg.

"Try and relax." She advised.

"You should have called for one of us if you wanted to leave your room." Cliff gently admonished his son.

"I just wanted some water."

"You are definitely brothers." Angie sighed.

"What happened?!?"

They turned to see Alex and Dylan staring in shock.

Daniel laid his head on the floor and closed his eyes.

Chapter Twenty Four

Daniel glanced at Alex who wore a deep frown. Dylan stood by her side, arms folded, wearing a matching frown.

"How many times do I have to say I'm sorry?" He asked.

"You were not ready to move about on your own." Alex eyed him sternly.

Daniel sighed and stared at his hands.

"I promise not to do it again." He replied in a little boy voice.

Alex lifted his chin.

"If you do, I will take you to the inn and tie you to a bed."

He somehow successfully hid the smirk as he waggled his eyebrows at her.

Alex's lips twitched betraying the smile threating to break out on her face.

Rollie and Angie covered their mouths to hide their smiles as the Coopers and Dingo looked on sternly. Mangela stood back and watched it all with a grin.

"I believe Dylan has something to say to you." Alex said and looked at her son.

"No riding for a week after you're better!"

"You're grounding me?!?" Daniel asked, gaping.

"I think that's an excellent idea."

"Mom!"

The others nodded in agreement, though the smiles weren't too successfully hidden.

"I can see I'm on my own here! Will I get time off if I don't do anything else stupid?" He asked Dylan.

"Maybe... but if I hear you didn't obey us I'll add to it!" Dylan glared at him.

"Guess I'd better behave myself...the whole town will be watching me."

"We have eyes everywhere." Alex looked at him.

"I know." Daniel sighed wearily.

"Back to bed." Dylan ordered.

"I.....need some help." Daniel replied. Seeing the look in the boy's eyes made him re-think what he'd planned to say.

Rollie helped him to bed again.

"Glad I'm not you. Grounded for a week." The Aussie smirked.

"Some brother you are! You didn't even back me up!" Daniel glared at him.

"You called me 'brother'." Rollie touched his hand.

The minister opened his mouth then closed it, not sure what to say.

"We'll talk when you're stronger." Rollie smiled at him.

Daniel closed his eyes and drifted off.

The minister awoke the next morning to find himself alone. He sighed deeply and sat up a little, feeling better than yesterday. The door opened and Dr. Watson entered.

"How do you feel this morning?"

"Better." He answered truthfully and searched her face for signs that she knew what he had done yesterday.

"Good. I'm going to look you over again. Rollie mentioned something about your thigh hurting, unfortunately it will have to heal on its own. No Star Trek cures in this little black bag, though it would make life infinitely easier." She smiled.

Daniel nodded, thinking she must not know since she hadn't lectured him.

"Need to use the bathroom?"

"Yeah."

"Ruby sent some salts up so we'll get you into the tub soon."

She helped him stand and Rollie again assisted him in the use of the facilities then helped him back to bed.

"I want you to eat your oatmeal and drink your juice....it will help you get stronger....so you can move about on your own." She eyed him.

"You did hear." He sighed.

"Yes, I also approve of the grounding."

Daniel sighed again then looked over to see Bonnie bringing in his breakfast.

"Thanks mom."

"You're welcome honey." She smiled and left with Rollie.

"I need to go too." Lily said.

"Could you do me a favor when you get to town?"

"That depends on what it is." She eyed him.

"There's someone I want, I need, to see."

Angie looked over at Rollie and saw the small smile that curved his lips. I know what he's thinking about. He had told her that Daniel had called him 'brother' last night. Maybe this whole thing has been a turning point for them. I pray they don't get their hopes up too high though, Daniel's only been dealing with all this for a couple of days, it could take him a very long time to get truly comfortable with it...if he ever does, she sighed.

"Angie, would you like to go to town with me? Daniel needs a few things."

"Um...sure. Just let me tell Rol." She nodded to Bonnie.

Angie walked over and touched her husband's shoulder. "I'm going to town with Mrs.Cooper."

"Okay sweetie." He nodded and kissed her.

The women left and Angie glanced at Bonnie as they walked.

"Daniel has an amazing view from his backyard."

Bonnie nodded then turned to her. "I asked you to come down with me because I want to know about your husband....how is he like my son?"

"Obviously they are both very stubborn when it comes to their health." Angie chuckled. "Rol is a doctor's worst nightmare, he does not want to stay put to recover."

"Daniel didn't like being confined either. He would get cabin fever and I would buy him books so he wouldn't get bored."

"Daniel's really lucky to have you for a mom."

"Thank you. What about Rollie's mother?"

"She died when Rol was pretty young."

"I'm sorry. Daniel is my joy....I'm sure Rollie was hers."

"Probably." Angie nodded.

"Tell me more about him."

Rollie knocked on the door and looked in.

"Finished?"

"Yeah, can I get you to do something for me?"

"Not going to get me grounded too is it?"

"Aren't you funny! I'm tired of laying in bed. I want to sit on the back porch and get some fresh air."

"I don't know...maybe I should call and clear it with Dylan first." Rollie laughed.

"You're really enjoying this aren't you!" Daniel glared at him.

"Sure am mate." The Aussie grinned and walked over grabbing Daniel's gym shoes.

Once Daniel was shod Rollie helped him to the porch bench and joined him.

The minister took a deep breath of fresh air and smiled.

"Where did everyone else get off to?" He asked.

"Your mum and Ange went to town, dad and Mangela went on a walkabout and your father is here somewhere returning phone calls."

Daniel nodded.

"I think it's time for that ----" Rollie started.

"Morning, heard you had a bit of a tumble yesterday." Father Mac. said coming up.

"I suppose the whole island knows." Daniel shook his head and sighed.

"It is a small island." The priest chuckled.

"Rollie...do you mind if I talk to Father Mac alone?"

"Oh... okay... I'll be inside if you need me." The Aussie replied and went indoors.

"You seem to have a great deal on your mind." The priest said when Daniel was silent for a while.

"A lot has been going on the last week." Daniel sighed.

"Daniel....is this about Rollie being your brother?"

He received a wide-eyed look.

"I overheard he and his father talking the night of the accident. I imagine this must be difficult for you to accept."

"I never knew I was adopted, when the DNA test came back it had to be wrong, but my parents came with that news rather than my birth certificate. In a few hours my world changed forever."

"How do you feel about these changes?"

"Hurt, angry....scared. I don't know what they want from me. What if they want me to change? Be a Tyler? I don't know how to be anyone but who I am. I don't want to hurt them but I've been Daniel Cooper for over thirty-one years and I don't think I can change." Daniel confessed.

"Have you told them how you feel?"

"No." Daniel sighed.

"I think that would be a good start...as well as calling the 'home office'." Father Mac. smiled.

"Thanks." Daniel nodded gratefully.

"I need to be getting along." He said and patted the younger man's shoulder as he rose.

Rollie looked out to see Daniel's head bowed over his steepled fingers. His heart went out to his brother, he was so vulnerable now. Please help my twin find some resolution in all this turmoil.

The phone rang startling him slightly and he answered it.

"Hello?"

"Daniel?"

"Who's calling?"

"Arnie, who's this?"

"Hey mate, it's Rollie, hold on, Daniel's outside." The Aussie opened the french doors. "Arnie." He held the phone out to his twin.

"Thanks." Daniel nodded and took it as Rollie stepped back inside to give him privacy. "Hey Greenburg!"

"Hey Coop! I see you have company."

"There's something I need to tell you....and you'd better sit down."

"What is it Daniel?"

The minister smiled at the concern in his friend's voice.

"Rollie is....my identical twin brother Arne."

There was silence on the other end of the phone for several seconds then a chuckle.

"You had me going there for a minute Cooper." Arnie laughed.

"Arnie...I'm not joking. Rollie and I are twins, we were separated at birth. The whole thing began a few days ago...."

Chapter Twenty Five

Rollie saw Daniel was still on the phone so he walked into the bedroom and retrieved the breakfast dishes which he washed and put away, then sat down to read Callie's article on Daniel's accident.

"Rollie!"

The Aussie walked quickly to the door and opened it.

"I think I'd like to take that bath now. Lily said Ruby left some salts..."

"How do you like your water?" Rollie nodded.

"Warm."

The twin went inside and drew the bath then helped Daniel in and into the tub where the minister laid his head back on the rolled towel and sighed contentedly closing his eyes.

"Temp. okay?"

"Mm-hm."

"I'll leave you to it then." Rollie smiled and left him to soak.

"Hi, Mrs. Cooper, Angie, how's Daniel?" Bonita asked as they exited the store.

"Sore, but getting better, thank you for asking." Bonnie smiled at her.

"Heard Dylan grounded him." The stylist laughed.

"No bike riding for a week." Angie nodded.

"Ouch! Daniel loves to ride through the trails in the woods."

"Morning ladies." Kevin nodded as he passed.

"I have papers for the cottage, back at my office." Brian joined them.

"Uh, okay, Rol and I can look them over if you want to bring them up to Daniel's?"

"How is Daniel?" Nub asked.

"Getting better." Bonnie reiterated, grateful so many people cared about her son.

"Tell him I'll be up to see him later." The cop requested.

"I'll bring those papers by later too."

"Okay." Angie nodded.

"We should get back with these groceries." Bonnie said and led her toward the hill.

"I know you must hate this. When I was in hospital last year and I hated not being able to do things for myself." Rollie sympathized as he dried Daniel's back.

"Why were you there?"

"Got shot." He shrugged.

"Shot?!?" Daniel looked at him.

"Ange witnessed a murder, the killer came after her and I took the bullet."

"When was this?"

"A few days before Christmas."

"I was injured in March."

"Alex told me."

"I walked with death for a short time."

"I did too....the bullet struck my heart."

Brown eyes met each other with deep care and concern for the other.

"We'd better get you dressed." Rollie said after a moment.

"Are you boys in there?" Dingo called with a slight rap on the door.

"We'll be out in a few minutes dad." Rollie answered.

" 'kay."

"That soak help?"

"Yeah." Daniel smiled at him.

Rollie helped him into clothes and slippers and they left the bathroom.

"Couch...please?"

Rollie led him over and the minister sat with an audible sigh.

"Daniel! You're up." Bonnie smiled.

"I'll take these to the kitchen." Angie said taking the bag from her.

"Would you like some tea honey?"

"That'd be great." Daniel smiled at his mom.

"Oh, Rol, Brian is bringing papers up for the cottage later."

"You're buying a house here?" Cliff asked.

"Lighthouse keeper's cottage. I looked at it last time I was here." Rollie nodded.

"Here we are honey, a warm cup of tea." Bonnie handed it to him then sat down beside him. "Kevin said he would come visit a little later."

Daniel nodded and sipped the tea then took a deep breath and looked at everyone. "Would you all have a seat, it's time to talk."

Everyone sat down and waited for him to begin.

Daniel cleared his throat and turned to Bonnie and Cliff. ""I love you both very much...nothing can change that."

"We love you too son." Cliff patted his leg.

"I've spent these last few days thinking about everything....I can't change who I am for you." He said looking at Rollie and Dingo. "I am Daniel Cooper, son of Bonnie and Cliff, I may not have been born to them but I am their son----"

"Daniel, dad and I don't want or expect you to change. We like you just the way you are." Rollie knelt before him.

"You really don't want me to be more like you? More...Australian? More....Tyler?"

"No! I never expected you to be anything or anyone than the man I see before me." Dingo reiterated Rollie's thoughts.

"Good." Daniel said with a sigh of relief. "I was just afraid of hurting one of you...."

"Honey, your father and I don't want you to feel guilty for wanting them in your life." Bonnie assured him.

"Thanks mom." He said gratefully then looked at Dingo. "I....can't call you dad...."

"Dingo is fine." The older man assured with a smile then looked at Rollie. "I know I wasn't much of a father----"

"Dad---"

"No Rollie, I let you and your mother down....I'm going to try and be better, I swear it."

Rollie hugged him bringing a tear to Angie's eye and a hope that he kept that promise.

A phone rang and Rollie and Cliff both reached for theirs.

"Mine." The Aussie apologized and went to the kitchen.

Angie followed.

"Tyler. Hey, Kenny. Now? Hold on." He looked at Daniel. "The producer of the film we're working on needs to see us in Seattle, you set for a while?"

"I'm good." Daniel nodded, grateful his brother thought about him since Rollie had been helping him in the bathroom the last few days.

"Kenny? We'll see you then. Bye." Rollie closed the phone.

"Changes?" Angie asked.

"Yeah." He sighed.

"We'd better get going if we're going to catch the ferry."

"You already missed it." Daniel replied eyeing the clock then looked at Rollie. "Know how to drive a boat?"

"I've handled a few."

"Keys are on the counter, anyone can tell you which one 'Emily' is."

"When did you get a boat?" Cliff asked.

"It was willed to me by someone I counseled." Daniel smiled slightly.

"We appreciate it." Rollie nodded grabbing the keys and heading for the door.

"Well....anyone up for a game of chess?" Daniel smiled at them all as his twin left.

Chapter Twenty Six

"Hey pal, saw Rollie and Angie leave on your boat." Kevin said as he sat down with him a couple of hours later.

"They had to go to the mainland for work."

"Ah. So how are you doing?"

"Better."

Kevin eyed him dubiously.

"I am feeling better." Daniel chuckled crossing his heart.

"You really scared us man."

"I'm sorry."

"You're my best friend, ya know? When they said you fell down the ravine I just flashed back to finding you under that tree." The cop shook his head and sighed.

"I know, it comes back to me sometimes too." Daniel admitted squeezing his hand.

"Well...I need to get back to patroling. You need anything before I go?"

"Actually....I want to go into town for dinner....after I check with Dr. Watson."

"And Dylan?" Kevin grinned not able to resist the tease.

"Ha! Ha!" Daniel rolled his eyes. "Can you give us a lift if she says okay?"

"Sure."

"Thanks, can you grab the cordless for me?"

The cop did then bid him good-bye and left.

"Dr. Watson? It's Daniel...I have a request."

Rollie looked at his watch as they headed back.

"Did Daniel sound mad when you called?"

"No. He was okay that we'd taken so long."

"And Kevin is taking them into town and we're to meet them?"

"Yep. I think Daniel is like me,hates to be confined for long."

"You really are brothers." She smiled at her husband.

Kevin helped Daniel up the stairs while Cliff held the door open.

"Take your time honey." Bonnie cautioned.

Daniel nodded and walked slowly so he wouldn't trip as he stepped inside.

"What are you doing down here?!? Kevin! How could you let him talk you into this?!?" Alex demanded glaring at them as Dylan stood behind her wearing a frown.

"Kevin..." Daniel turned to him.

The cop removed a folded piece of paper from his jacket pocket and handed it to her.

" ' I have given Daniel permission to come to town for a few hours to alleviate, in his own words, "extreme boredom"'. Signed,Dr.Lily Watson."

Daniel arched an eyebrow at her.

"I'll see about a table." She smirked and left them there.

"Rollie and Angie will be here soon too." He called and she nodded picking a table for all of them. Daniel turned his attention to the frowning boy. "I have permission from my doctor and I have behaved all day."

"I'm still gonna keep an eye on you."

"You can join us if you want."

The boy nodded and followed them over.

"Thanks Kevin."

"Have a good dinner." He bade them then left.

"So, what can I get you to drink?" Alex asked as they sat.

Rollie tossed the rope to Harry who tied 'Emily' up.

"Thanks." The Aussie smiled at him as he climbed out then helped Angie onto the dock.

The couple walked hand-in-hand to the inn, spotted the others and joined them.

"Thanks Daniel." Rollie handed the keys over.

"Anytime."

"Okay, here are your drinks." Alex brought them over.

"Could you help me up?"

"Bathroom?" Rollie asked.

"No."

Alex helped him stand and he looked around with a satisfied smile.

"Could I have your attention?" He called.

"Son?"

"It's okay dad. I have something to say.....most of you have commented about the resemblence between Rollie Tyler and myself....."

Several patrons, including Callie, Nub, Brian, Roy and Charlie nodded.

"Well, a few days ago we took a DNA test to determine if we were related. It showed us to be identical twins. How things came to be with Rollie and I growing up so far apart is still a mystery, but I wanted to tell you because you are my friends and I want you to know all my family. I have had many blessings in my life, friends, love," he glanced at Alex, "and family," he smiled at Bonnie and Cliff then looked at Rollie, Angie, Dingo and Mangela, who grinned at him. "I am so grateful to God for all of it. That's all I have to say. Oh! Except that I know Callie is dying to hear the whole story but I hope it can wait 'til tomorrow so I can eat with my family?"

The looks of shock were replaced with smiles and several people laughed outright while Callie shook her head with an embarrassed grin.

"So that's why they've been spending so much time at Daniel's." Nub tapped his head.

"And why Rollie's dad was so concerned about him." Brian nodded.

" 'Continents Apart but Brother's United...' what do you think?" Callie asked.

"Twins, that'll take some getting used to." Molly smiled as the twins talked.

"Wonder if we could use the twins aspect to bolster tourism....?"

"Dad." Molly warned.

"Just thinking aloud." He defended.

Alex came around the bar and poured a couple of beers for Rollie and Angie.

"You knew, didn't you?!?" The blonde eyed her.

"Daniel told me. It was really tough on him when he first found out." She smiled at the smile he wore.

"He seems pretty happy now." Nub replied.

"The accident seems to have put things into perspective for him." Fr. Mac answered.

Alex nodded and took the beers over then pulled out her order pad. "Separate checks?"

"Make it one." Cliff smiled at Daniel.

"Thanks dad." Daniel smiled back.

"One check it is. Everyone ready?"

Five minutes later she was placing the orders on the wheel in the kitchen for Boris.

"Is true? Daniel and Rollie twins?"

"That's right Boris."

"Rollie is from Australia, Daniel is American....Boris not undertand."

"They were separated when they were born by someone, they don't know who did it."

"Is bad person who did this?"

"We don't know." She shrugged and heard laughter and looked out the door to find many diners congregated around their table. She let them stay until dinner was ready then gave them a look, one they knew well, as she brought the food over, making them retreat to their own tables so the minister and family could eat in peace.

"Mom, what do you think about them being twins?" Dylan asked after they had gone.

"I don't know...I'm happy for Daniel I guess. What do you think about it?"

"I think it's cool." He grinned.

Alex laughed and hugged him.

Rollie and Angie went back to the house with Daniel, and Kevin, who came in while they were eating and offered to drive him home, while the others remained at the inn, per Daniel's insistance they get some sleep.

He helped his twin to the bathroom and bed and tucked him in.

"Daniel, could we talk tomorrow? There's some things I need to tell you."

"Okay." Daniel nodded.

"Sleep well, I'll just be on the couch if you need anything." Rollie smiled and touched his face then turned out the light and left him to sleep.

"I need to get back..." Kevin said when he closed the door.

"Could you give Ange a lift?"

"Rol ----"

"One of us might as well use the room we're paying for."

She sighed but nodded and kissed him.

"I'll be in the truck." Kevin blushed and went out to give them privacy.

"I'm gonna tell him about the Dreamtime."

"And the other?"

"We should prepare them." He nodded.

"Yes, we should." She smiled and kissed him passionately. "Sleep tight." She whispered in his ear sending a tingle up his spine then left him for the night and he plopped down on the couch with a groan.

Chapter Twenty Seven

"G'day Daniel. Oatmeal, toast and juice."

"Thanks." Daniel smiled and sat up as Rollie put the tray on the bed.

"Sleep well?" The Aussie asked opening the drapes to let the sunshine in.

"Pretty well. The soreness isn't too bad this morning. How about you? The couch is okay but not a bed with your wife."

"Got that right." Rollie chuckled.

"So....what did you want to talk about?"

The Aussie settled onto the bed facing his twin. "Something called.....the Dreamtime...."

Angie came downstairs and followed Alex to the bar.

"Hey Alex, do you have a minute, I need to talk to you."

"Oh, well...." She looked around the room.

"Go on, I can handle it for a few minutes." Molly nodded from where she was brewing coffee.

"Uh, okay, lets use my office." Alex replied and led the blonde to it.

Molly smiled at their backs. It would be good for them to talk...especially if they were going to be sisters-in-law one day, as she hoped. It was still strange to think of Rollie and Daniel as twins, which the whole island knew now. Boris hit the bell and startled her of her thoughts and she sighed turning her attention back to work.

"Have a seat." Alex offered.

"You should sit." Angie smiled at her.

"What's going on?" The redhead frowned.

"I'm going to tell you about the first time Rol and I made love."

"Uh....that's....uh....really personal. Why would you tell me about this?" Alex asked flustered.

"To prepare you to be with his identical twin."

"It was like Ange and I were truly one person in that moment. It's....it's really hard to describe----"

"I know." Daniel uttered, a far-away look in his eyes.

"You've been with Alex?" Rollie asked surprised.

"I'd never felt that with someone else...." Daniel nodded.

"Alex is your lifemate Daniel....you love her in a way you've never loved anyone else. Just like I love Ange."

"I don't know." Daniel sighed. "Alex didn't say she felt anything unusual. Maybe she didn't....."

"It doesn't work that way. If you felt it, he did too Alex."

"But what if it was just....." Alex shrugged.

"Great sex?"

"Yeah...it has been a while." Alex smirked.

"Only one way to find out, come on."

"Where are we going?" Alex asked as Angie drug her toward the door.

"To see Daniel."

"No! I can't! I mean---"

"You want to know if he felt it too right?"

"Of course---"

"Then ask him."

Alex chewed on her lip. She did want to know if he had felt the amazing thing she had....but if he didn't, they weren't meant to be together....and a part of her didn't want to know if that were the case. She voiced these thoughts aloud.

"Isn't it better to know?"

"I...I suppose." Alex said in resignation and let Angie lead her out.

"So," Daniel said to Rollie as he finished breakfast, "about this Dreamtime...."

Rollie took Daniel's hand and held it between his own.

"The Dreaming is....it's life to the Aborigines. It's their connection to the Ancestor Spirits, it gives them their meaning of life, their law, how to treat others.... Mangela told me that if two people walk the same songline they can, sometimes, go through the Dreamtime together."

Daniel looked thoughtful for a moment then looked at him. "I want to learn more, but maybe Mangela should be here?"

"I agree but there's another part of the Dreamtime I want you to be prepared for....in the Dreaming, there may be visions...visions of the future. When a person sees something it's usually connected to their own lives or people they know, particularly ones close to them."

"Psychic ability? Do you have this?"

"One Dreaming I had was a gazelle surrounded by wolves. The Dreaming has to be interpreted by the dreamer before it can be understood....it wasn't until we discovered you were my twin was I able to decipher the Dream. The gazelle was you, Daniel...the wolves were reporters. I didn't connect it to the story Callie wrote at the time." He shook his head regretfully.

"No reason you should have thought of me when we were just friends at the time." Daniel squeezed his hand.

Rollie nodded then a smile came to his face. "Alex and Angie are on their way."

"Another...ability?"

"Yeah. At first, I could sense when Ange was outside the loft, then when she was five minutes away, now I can tell exactly where she is by her songline."

"You mentioned the 'songline' earlier, what is that exactly?"

"Um...lifeforce...."

"I think I understand." Daniel nodded thinking it was akin to the spirit. "Talk about a family history." He shook his head and climbed out of bed.

Rollie laughed and hugged him as the women came inside the small house.

"Alex needs to talk to you and I came to get my husband to look over the cottage papers."

"Sounds good, see you later." Rollie smiled at his twin and they left the house.

An awkward silence filled the bedroom until Daniel broke it.

"So what did you need to talk about?"

"Well....the other night when we....we...." She stammered.

"Made love." He helped holding out his hands.

"I....I....I felt....."

"Something you've never felt before?"

She nodded looking at him relieved.

"A true joining between us." He leaned forward and kissed her deeply.

"Why didn't you tell me?" They said in unison and chuckled lightly together.

"You first." He smiled.

"I was afraid you'd think I was crazy or needy or both." She admitted.

"I thought you'd want to take me back to the hospital to have my head re-examined." He grinned.

Alex laughed and hugged him. "I love you Daniel."

He wrapped his arms around her her feeling a love deeper than he thought he was capable of. "I love you too." He replied softly.

Chapter Twenty Eight

Five days after his accident Daniel was hugging and kissing his parents good-bye.

"I'll miss you too." He told Bonnie with a smile.

"You'll always be my little boy." She smiled back.

"You'll always be my mom and dad. Have a safe trip." He bade them then watched them board and lift off for Irvine.

"I feel bad about everyone leaving you at once." Rollie said when he'd turned from waving to them.

"You came for a job." Daniel shrugged and smiled at him.

"Walk us to the ferry?"

"Absolutely."

The five family members walked through town receiving nods and smiles from the islanders as they headed for the dock where the ferry was waiting.

"Not the trip here I expected." Rollie said gazing at his brother.

"You and me both." Daniel smiled.

"Can we have a minute alone?" Rollie requested.

The others headed down the gangplank.

Rollie hugged him tightly filled with emotion.

"You need anything call me....and let me know how things are with Alex. I love you."

"I will. I love you too and....I'm glad you're my brother."

"We'll be out from time to time to work on the cottage." Rollie smiled at him warmly.

"I've been known to weld a pair of pliers." Daniel grinned and they walked down together.

"Well...." Dingo said.

"I usually hug my friends good-bye." Daniel held his arms out to his birth father.

"Would you mind if I drop in from time to time?" Dingo asked holding him tightly.

"That would be nice." Daniel assured him as they let go of each other.

Mangela grabbed Daniel in a brief hug and flashed him a grin before boarding the ferry as they heard him say, "two sonnyboys."

"Tell Alex I'll call her, we have a lot to talk about." Angie grinned at him.

Daniel laughed and gave her a hug. "Keep these three out of trouble for me."

"Hey!" Father and son said together.

"I can only promise my husband's sanctity." She answered and grabbed each of their arms to board the ferry.

"You okay?"

Daniel turned and smiled at Alex.

"Yeah." He answered and waved to them as the ferry started away.

"Wonder when they'll be back?"

"I have no idea." He smiled.

Ruby Vasquez watched from above and sighed. She wished when she and the Angledogs had worked on getting him together with Delores they had chosen Alex instead. They'd be married by now for sure, she lamented, then brightened.

"Note to self...get Alex and Daniel married by the end of next year." She grinned and walked away.
